The Forged Iraqi Letter: What Just Happened?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

What just happened? Evidence. A secret that has been judiciously kept for five years just spilled out. All of what follows is new, never reported in any way:

The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush -- a man still carrying a $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush's famous deck of wanted men -- has been America's secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, "resettled" Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money.

In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD -- as Habbush had foretold -- the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a "small team from the al Qaeda organization."

The mission was carried out, the letter was created, popped up in Baghdad, and roiled the global newcycles in December, 2003 (conning even venerable journalists like Tom Brokaw). The mission is a statutory violation of the charter of the CIA, and amendments added in 1991, prohibiting the CIA from conducting disinformation campaigns on U.S. soil.

So, here we go again: the administration is in full attack mode, calling me names, George Tenet is claiming he doesn't remember any such thing -- just like he couldn't remember "slam dunk" -- and reporters are scratching their heads. Everything in my book is on the record, with many sources. And so, we watch and wait....

What just happened? Evidence. A secret that has been judiciously kept for five years just spilled out. All of what follows is new, never reported in any way: The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil...

As usual the cowardly Dems will look the other way, become deaf in a hurry and pretend they SEE NOTHING, HEAR NOTHING, KNOW NOTHING!.(Sgt Shultz is the Dem model for how to pretend there is nothing worth investigating, well except a baseball player using steroids)

The US House brings articles of impeachment to the US Senate. What's the point if the Dems don't have the vote in the Senate?

Another story that will get ignored and buried by MSM. Let something like this emerge during Clinton's administration and it would be revisited on a nightly basis.

This fits the pattern; precooked intel, finding bad intel that fits a preconceived conclusion, and disregarding any intel which points away from that preconceived conclusion.

This is a new kind of treason, the government used to pursue some grand world-domination corporate agenda, no doubt discussed at Cheney's secret energy policy meetings.

He and his stooges should be humiliated, villified, castigated and imprisoned. Tenet's medal should be taken back. Colin Powell should also be censured for caving to these lying traitors.

December 2003: Bogus document leaked to Con Coughlin of The Daily Telegraph.

January 2004: Vice President Dick Cheney is quoted by M.E. Sprengelmeyer of the Rocky Mountain News:

"We haven't really had the time yet to pore through all those records in Baghdad. We'll find ample evidence confirming the link, that is the connection if you will between al Qaida and the Iraqi intelligence services. They have worked together on a number of occasions." [1]

So in January, at the latest, Cheney is very much aware of the document, and is almost pointing it out to journalists.

All my life, people have said that I have an answer for everything.
I do not know how to answer this.

My questions are:
1. What are the elements of the crime of treason?
2. Is there any definition of the word "treason" that this deception and forged letter do not fit?

Treason is disloyalty to your nation. This letter Ron has uncovered is a smoking gun. It's a crime to fabricate evidence. But to do so in pursuit of starting a WAR? That's a crime against humanity. That certainly encompasses the concept of disloyalty to one's country. This Administration pursued a neoconservative agenda, in which the despised federal government is run under ("starve the beast") or abused to pursue that neocon agenda.

ASTOUNDING. Proof after proof after proof of how George W Bush and Dick Cheney used and abused the people of America to make billions and live out their sick fantasies of ruling the world, using American soldiers as gun fodder and American media as gangster's molls. And yet the American public is not insulted and enraged enough to go after criminals who hijacked their government and corrupted its institutions. It is beyond belief 50% of this abused lot is STILL planning to vote for those who peddled blatant lies, schemed, plotted and robbed them till they are jobless and homeless.

excellent, but if you step back and see the whole thing as a strategy to secure Israel, pacifying the Saudi's by removing troops, eliminating the Saddam who was paying rewards to suicide bombers and establishing an occupied disarmed Iraq it still only looks like treason when you remember that we're not Israel. Stupidity alone doesn't rise to the crime of treason. Republican self-righteousness and Cheneyesque arrogance translate into geopolitical stupidity. The tragedy is that true traitors could not have hurt us worse, but these are just bigtime sinners.

The key factor in the success of the Bush Putch is that they are totally cynical about the exercise of governance; willing to use any means whatsoever to build and buttress their power.

The key factor that enabled their putch, is the American public's naive unwillingness to consider that an "elected" leader will baldly lie to them. This, in the midst of the rampant public conceit that there is no such thing as an honest politician. If dishonesty is the only constant, in our evaluation of our "leaders," why do we then berate any who point out (and can prove!) that that estimation is absolutely accurate?

Has a diet of televised schizophrenia fragmented our brains into a rational side that realistically evaluates the character of a politician, and a fantasy side that nevertheless expects honest behavior, from a person who's been shown to lie, cheat, and steal?

I think this is exactly what's happened to us -- and I don't mean just on a collective level. I think habitual exposure to a diet of mental inconsistencies has created a populace who can behave more or less rationally, while holding logical inconsistancies to be mutually true.

Our mental hygiene has been critically compromised by a diet of logical nonsense. If we want to watch tv without going screaming-mad, we're forced to discount the nonsense.

It's all true; therefore it's all false.

shoot your tv. your life and sanity depend on it.

Thank you Mr. Susskind. Bush and Co. are capable of that and much more. The reason the letter was leaked to th UK Telegraph is because Cheney was told he could not be prosecuted for tampering with the press and Congress if he did it overseas. Neat.

Our laws are mere eventualities to these men. They have destroyed the concept of America. We are no longer a nation of laws.

The Constitution is dead and both parties and all 3 branches of government are corrupt. so, now let's hear those inane pleas to contact your Representative and Senator or sillier yet, calls "to take back our country".

The two sources Mr. Suskind quotes in his book about the forged letter from the head of the Iraqi Intelligence service to Saddam, who work for the CIA are recanting their stories because they are being threatended. Congress will hold hearings, ... isn't that right Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi? As for legal consequences, I am certain the good judge Mukasey will get right on an investigation of this. DOJ probably has the FBI working on this right now, ... right Mr. Mueller.

Thank you Mr. Suskind. The truth stands on its own, and has staying power. Its bearers catch hell, as you, Scott McLellan and the Wilsons have discovered.

It must be tedious for the White House press corps to hear Dana Perino castigate truthtellers day in and day out. While there is no shame in this administration, we can hope there might be some accounting at some point in the future.

Why would we hope that there will be an accounting?

It seems abundantly clear to me that nobody--including the Democratic nominee--intends to hold this criminal administration criminally responsible for anything. Democratic representatives and senators have evidence dripping off their shoes and falling on their heads and shoulders every day, but they say there's not enough to charge anybody, it wouldn't be in the country's interest, blah blah blah.

These people keep saying they're not going to impeach or prosecute because "the American people want us to be working on the real problems we have going forward," or whatever. Really? Why does one preclude the other? And where do they get the idea that the average Joe out here wouldn't absolutely LOVE to see some of these criminals--including Bush himself--held responsible? Do they really think we want to see them all walk away and go on to big-money careers as authors and lecturers and heroes of the right? How much would it do to restore our reputation in the world for other nations to see us hold these criminals accountable?

What all this really means is, if you're highly-placed enough, you can engage in criminal activity that leads to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, and you'll escape without a scratch. A few of your underlings might get a little bump now and then, but that's it, and who cares? That's why they're there. Same old same old.

I would have to reluctantly agree. As far as I am concerned, both MeNamara and Kissinger should have stood trial for their crimes in Vietnam. Same old, same old indeed. The problem is that there is a double standard. Some Americans feel that we should follow principles that we hope would guide all mankind, but others feel that they are following their own version-- dog eat dog. So Cheney will be lauded and feted by the billionaire rightwing in their private hunting lodges. Hopefully, the econimic mess will bring about change that requires some accountability. If the rich getter rich and the poor keep on getting poorer, it might happen.

Listen, if Dems (and I am one) wanted real change, with a real spine, they should have nominated Kucinich. If they wanted experience, they should've nominated Biden or Dodd (OK, maybe Richardson). But they--we--didn't. We nominated the guy who took everybody's breath away, who was (admittedly) great on TV and great in speeches, but comparatively short on record, and now we're seeing why that may have been a bad idea--although he may win anyway, and I hope he does. But even he has said he's not going after the top guys. So...get used to it, I guess.

It is sad to see that so manyof you have bought into the Carl Rovian tactic of trying everytrick in the book to discredit their opponent.
I have likned some information sources for you that prove your statements regarding Senator Obama are ABSOLUTELY FALSE....
Further, if you are going to allow msm cable to do your thinking, you are never going to get out of the fog.
Senator Obama may have arrived at the UNITED STATES CONGRESS in 2006, but he has been fighting for you and me for about 20 YEARS.
He fought against predatory lending in 2005... While John McCain was in the process of buying all those 9 homes he owns.... (Not his wife Cindy...McCain owns)
Everytime I read that same "low information" comment, I cringe...simply because I know that you have NO IDEA OF THE WORK THAT SENATOR OBAMA HAS DONE FOR OUR VETERANS, INCLUDING PASSING A BILL THAT INCREASES HEALTH BENEFITS FOR OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES!

"People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability. "

Obama's legislation lists is too long, so I'll categorize:
During the first - 8 - eight years of Obama's elected service, he introduced (sponsored) over 820 bills. He introduced some of the following:
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

During Obama's first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.

In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no experience, and is not ready to be president.
Obama is not just a talker, speech giver. He's a doer, for the good of America and the world.

Pass it on....It's impressive!

I don't think that most Americans can conceive of what will surely happen in the next couple years. The only asset we have that other countries don't have is a bloated military with access to a staggering amount of nuclear weapons. Those weapons will become pawns in a disasterous effort to our status and respect...both of which are much lower than we are aware thanks to a media that continually lies to a numb public. "America" is, indeed, over and what it will become is the legacy that our generation (baby boomers) have left our children. It is a disgrace that we have pinned our hopes on the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. We now know that they are just the other side of the same coin. I see prison labor camps and a ruling class in Dubai.

The really sad part is that nothing will change. This bunch will pass into history and they will get someone to doctor the facts and they will be remembered as leaders, not criminals. When they go join the ranks of the good politicians there will be lots of money spent on ceremony and flowery speaches by the spin controllers telling us what a good job they did. (remember how great Nixon was at his funeral). Things will get named after them, librarys will be built to contain the documents that they have had doctored to show how great they are, (however I must admit that I liked the idea of naming a Sewage Treatment Plant after the great decider), statues will be erected and life will go on with a new set of criminals that will come up with new and better ways to zap us and use us. I personally am very glad that I am near the end of it all and feel very sorry for the upcoming generations. Sorry that we left you this mess, not that I think "we the people" could have done anything about it anyway.

I am impressed with the bloggers who blog at Huffington Post. Yes, there is still intelligent life in the USA. I was really beginning to wonder.

Perhaps Mr. Suskind could start a web cite for those of us who feel passionately that the Bushies and neocons should not go unpunished for the unnecessary death and destruction they have caused. We need to work on our elected officials, including Obama should he become president, if Bush is leaves office without being held accountable.

A low apporval rating and historical disdain for his presidency is not enough for the damage he and his abetters have done to the US and to Iraq. They have abused power and broken laws. What does it say about our system of government if they are not penalized as any ordinary citizen would be?

aspen, as you well know, Buch & Company have been above the law from day one when they stole the election. I agree that Bush should be impeached even if he has less that three months in office because if he is under investigation to be impeached, at least it would take away his ability to pardon more people who deem themselves above the law. Enough is enough. America Wake Up!

Justice for all doesn't work with a large centralized power base. This is what always happens when you have big government. Always, always, always.
