Dear Governor Paterson (An Open Letter)

Dear Governor Paterson,

I write this letter to you, my friend, to publicly announce my gratitude for your courage and leadership on issues that will ultimately make this state, nation and the world a better place. I have known you for a very long time and have always admired your passion for doing what is right, which is often times not the most popular. This is what makes you a great leader, especially for our under-served communities that you have advocated on behalf of for decades. We were all inspired by your dedication to reforming the drug laws of our state and recognize the accomplishment your administration achieved by ending the Rockefeller Drug Laws after 36 years. So, we know when you believe in something, what you can do.

However, as your friend and supporter, we know you can do much more, if you forget about what the poll numbers say and let your heart lead. You have recently done this in showing support for the legalization of gay marriage. History will show you are right and will we support you on this issue. Mr. Governor, we want to go to work for you and we will, but we will not be easy on you, because we know your potential. When you were unexpectedly put into the role of Chief Executive of New York State, you were handed a plate full of problems. Although your first year was a bumpy ride, we are beginning to see your great leadership and vision shine through and take over. I encourage you to keep leading with your heart, and address issues like the promotion of good diet, well-being and education for youth, as well creating new jobs (hopefully green jobs) for our workers and making sure that every person in our state can afford health care. As the first African-American Governor of New York, you have already made history. We now want to help you create a legacy.

Respectfully,
Russell Simmons

Gov. Patterson's unapologetic support for gay people is, or at least ought to be, inspirational!

An eloquent letter from a great African-American role model. An urgent issue that Gov. Paterson also must address is the State's outdated unemployment insurance. The NY Times ran an article on this yesterday. No one in the NYC Metro area can survive on $430 a week (just raised from $405 as a result of $25 increase from the federal stimulus program). This figure has remained flat since 1998. With over 200,000 recently unemployed in NYC, we are quickly heading to a worsening health-care crisis, not to mention the thousands who will file for bankruptcy or lose their homes.

So good to see public support from an African American role model to Gov Patterson's brave stand on marriage equality. I hope we see other role models within the African American community throw full support behind equality issues outside of the comfort zone of those specific to race.

Because we always see gay rights leaders speak on race issues?

Why did you even have to go there with your condescending back-handed remark?

It doesn't matter if homosexuality is 2% behavioral and 98% genetic or vise versa or any combination of that or all of one and none of the other. Homosexuality is just as valid and important as heterosexuality and should be treated as such in any free society. Only a very superstitious or primitive fear based society would create laws prohibiting homosexuals from having the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts.

here here. I never see religious folk advocating for or saying they are willing to give up their special protected status under the law - after all religion is 100% choice and with dedication, strong belief, support and study 100% curable.

he forgot to mention how he raised taxes and pissed off Donald Trump.

I think Donald has his own issues to deal with..like that whole bankruptcy thing.

Where's the line for people to piss off Donald Trump? Can I take a number?

Mr. Simmons, It's interesting how you don't really make an argument for gay marriage in this post. Are you for two men getting married or not? And if so, why?

BTW, I don't want a government that "leads from the heart," I want our government to make deliberate decisions that consider the benefits and consequences of any changes it makes to existing laws.

Thank you for your letter Mr. Simmons. Many of Governor Paterson's efforts to help thwart the effects of the horrific economy and see that all New Yorkers have the same civil liberties has been met with much criticism. The media continuously rips him apart. I respect his efforts and hope that New Yorkers will be more supportive.

Great letter, Mr. Simmons. Thank you for writing it. I agree with every word.

What's really going on here is the elimination of the institution of marriage- RIP I say.

The institution of marriage has been on a downward spiral for a while now. Divorce is the biggest threat to marriage, not gay people. Infidelity is a threat to marriage, not gay people. If gay marriage is not for you, don't marry a gay person.

Comment by Randian below is perfect. Also would suggest the governor raise taxes on all millionaires and entertainers that reside in NY to 85 percent. Any sports or entertainment venue should carry an additional $10 tax per ticket that way, the gov could reduce the outrageous taxes, fares, and tolls for the middle and lower class! How does that sound Russell?
08:35 PM on 04/19/2009
I disagree about the $10 tax for sports and entertainment tickets. The people should be able enjoy sports and other forms of entertainment for cheaper, not higher costs. I agree on raising taxes on millionaires and other high-income people. Were there a way to ensure to tax the profits of the entertainers and sports groups we could get some true fiscal strength. However, the business of going to entertainment and sporting events should be encouraged, not made completely unaffordable by levying a tax on tickets.

I agree with Mr. Simmons in his support of the Governor.

Ending the Rockefeller Drug Laws was a big step away from the hypocritical, authoritarian, un-American drug policy. It's obvious the effects of that law among many other drug laws were intended to persecute certain ethnic groups, demographic groups and economic classes.

This is a step away from the decades of American gulags for users of certain drugs. Nevertheless, I'm still seething with rage against the self-appointed morality police who've ruined so many lives over such petty offenses as consuming a little bit of this or that recreational substance.

I have a feeling it's going to be an uphill battle for Gov. Patterson. His tax increases have made him quite unpopular among New Yorkers these days, regardless of political association and location. I want NY to allow gay marriage, but this whole tax business is going to make all of Gov. Patterson's good intentions, very difficult to push through.

dear russell simmons,
