Mr. President, If You Don't Come Out Fighting, You'll Not Only Lose Elections, But Respectfully, Also Your Soul

What's Your Reaction:

Dear Mr. President,

Yesterday, was a sad day in America. One of our nation's heroes was told he was not allowed to do his job of protecting our country because of his sexual orientation. Lt. Dan Choi honorably served this nation at war in Iraq and now, at great misfortune, has become a casualty of war that still rages in our homeland; the war for equal rights for all Americans. For the sake of your legacy and the legacy of one of our nation's greatest attributes, its tolerance of diversity, Mr. President, it is now the time to put the security of our nation first over the intolerance of others and re-instate Lt. Choi to his National Guard duties.

One day we will look back and realize how incredible your accomplishments have been. We will look back, as we have done on the abolition of slavery, the women's right to vote, the civil rights movement, the mission to put a man on the moon, and so many other critical moments in the history of our country and realize that your compassion for all of humanity was a gift we fully appreciated. We will look back at these first eighteen months of your presidency and recognize the sacrifices you have made to ensure that every Americans' future is bright, not just those that voted for you on November 4th, 2008. We will say that we cannot believe that we passed health care reform. We cannot believe that we passed financial reform. We cannot believe that we appointed the first Latina Justice to the Supreme Court. We cannot believe that we gave cash for clunkers! Ok, we can believe that. But, in all seriousness, Mr. President, your accomplishments are tremendous and when we look back, we will be proud of the work that we have done.

However, Mr. President, despite these accomplishments there are still many people who do not want you to succeed and have done everything they can, including dirty media tricks, to stop you from being the President we all want you to be. We will not accept only legislative victories during your presidency, as we know you have a lot more to offer than that. We will not accept the continuation of the destruction of our planet and the abuse of our animals, as we know you have compassion for all that is living. We will not allow you to be any ordinary President, as there is nothing ordinary about you. As it is important to focus your attention on delivering your legislative promises, you must retain a watchful eye on the most vulnerable Americans. We expect you to protect people like Lt. Dan Choi, Shirley Sherrod and Van Jones, even when they might seem like distractions during your efforts to reform our government and policies. It is this compassion that you have for humanity that inspired us all during your campaign. And it is your intellect and strength to stand-up to all of the negative noise that allowed us a victory on election day.

Mr. President, the time has come for Barack Obama to be Barack Obama. When you know things are not right, we expect you to fix them. We have already lost Van Jones. We might lose Shirley Sherrod. Let us not lose Lt. Dan Choi.

If you don't come out fighting, and take the fight to the right, you'll not only lose elections, but respectfully, also your soul.

I agree with this sentiment, although i could and never would work for or vote for the GOP.

Look at the reaction to Weiner in the House last night- positive.

We need the WH to come out fighting- the country is waiting for it for months now.

If it doesn't happen soon... we have lost the greatest opportunity in generations for REAL and much needed Change to the United States.

We know you are a gentleman Obama and we love you for it.

But it is time to BOX BACK.

By the way, is America really messed up enough to elect GW Bush TWICE and only give Obama ONE chance?? Really?? Say it isn't so.

The real bottom line is that the GOP are pissed that there was such a monumental shift in power in the last elections. I'm sure everyone has seen that their strategy is to block EVERYTHING Obama and the Dem's try to do, even if they agree with it in principle, so that they can point the finger in 2010 and 2012 at the Dem's and say they did nothing. That is why the Repubs have been nicknamed "the party of no". Dems don't do that. I have never seen an elected democrat block legislation they agree with and would benefit people out of personal spite and vendetta against a president or the other party, NEVER. Obama cannot sign bills unless they reach his desk, and guess what, the party of no blocks nearly all of them. Anything good that has been done so far has been a huge fight. The republicans continue their "out for blood" mentality though, and stir up racism, fearmongering, homophobia, nationalism, etc. ect. The things they want to blame Obama for are not new issues, none of them, yet they continue to block all attempts at resolution and blame him for all the problems in this country. I think as democrats we need to remember who our opposition is on a really fundamental level, support our president and our democratic members of senate and congress, and give Obama a chance to finish up in his next term.

I think you guys are just starting to realize exactly how cowardly this administration is. On a foreign policy front. If they can't face down Brietbart, what makes you think they can face down Putin?

He has gained far more international respect than his predecessor. George Bush made America a laughing stock foreign relations and diplomacy. Obama is an eloquent statesman, and I would much rather have him representing me and my country internationally than Bush, who couldn't even put a thought or sentence together.

A year and a half of this guy and he is yet to stand up for anything more than 'compromise' on most anything that would have helped the people much more had he fought for it. This man does not have fight in him. Plain and simple.
I would love to be proven wrong, but I am not going to hold my breath. He is surrounded by corporatists. The closest he will get to 'fighting' is to demand that the left compromise their core principles
. Rham said it best... F'ing retards. That is what the administration thinks of the people. Don't hold your breath looking for them to fight for non-corporate interests.

I likely have the opposite political views from you (I am a hardcore libertarian), but there is nothing in this post that I can disagree with. You nailed it to a 'T.'

I couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately, I think Obama is being as Obama as he can. We are not going to see anything wonderful from him.

Unless it doesn't cost any political capital. Other than that, he will not "take the fight to the right". He will take the fight to the left, as far as I can tell from his actions since election.

It's the hard choice things that we need a good president for, and in those things he has screwed the pooch.

We have already seen "wonderful" from him - we just nee dto report it and blog about it instead of this insanity of negativity.

Go back to your tea bagger hole - posts like yours are the ones screwing the pooch and can only come from someone who wants Jeb, RAnd, or Sarah for Prez.

If you come back and tell me you are Liberal or Progressive - then I say start acting and posting like it!

Yes Mr. President ... TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE RIGHT before time runs out on you. Do you want to be a one-term POTUS or not? You have to stay in the position to spare the country from the likes of Sarah Palin or Romney or any of those knuckleheads!

Mr. President, the time has come for Barack Obama to be Barack Obama.
I agree with you Mr. Simmons. They other day I felt that I needed to write a letter and remind Barack who Barack is. But I stopped myself because I thought about the fact that we expect to much of our president. We expect Obama to be the superman of presidents, and that's impossible.

Actually BO is being BO and he has become the voting "present" president, which he was in the Illinois state legislature, a politician who was loath to commit himself. Russel refuses to admit that it is BO's real soul and he is still wedded and shrouded into the false magic of BO words and exhortations while failing to recognize that the president should be judged on his actions.

Dan Choi and Shirley Sherrod is very important to be protected

Van Jones ? You should kidding
09:41 PM on 07/28/2010
Heck, even *Glen Beck* thought that Shirley Sherrod firing was absurd.
