Obama Has Worked to Curb Urban Violence

Posted: 09/18/2012 9:51 am

Last night, I marched through my old neighborhood in Queens. Squeezing my hand on my right side as we marched was the mother of a young man killed by a stray bullet outside a house party. Squeezing the hand on my left side was another mother who lost her son to the senseless violence that plagues our communities. I marched through my old neighborhood in Queens with almost a thousand men, women, and children as a show of love and unity to a community hurting. I marched because the shootings and deaths of our young people this summer has not just been in my old neighborhood in Queens, but in communities all across our urban landscape.

When Derrion Albert was killed on September 24, 2009, our nation witnessed, through a cell phone video camera, the horrors of a young man beaten to death. It not only awoke the nation, but it was also the catalyst for a new initiative started by President Obama, Secretary Duncan, and Attorney General Holder. The National Forum for Youth Violence Prevention was started in six cities soon after the death of Derrion. Its task is to examine old models and implement new ones to be used by local cities to combat violence in their communities.

When more black men were killed in one year (2009) than all of the US soldiers killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to date, we must give this problem the utmost attention. We must find solutions to curb the violence. Under the President's leadership, I am more confident we will get there. The National Forum for Youth Violence Prevention was a White House project. It received little attention from the press, but it is the type of work that President Obama is doing so that one day, we will no longer have to march holding the hands of mothers who still cry alone at night.

As much as I applaud the effort one should note that Chicago has more murders now that it did in all of last year and that is with gun control.
I don't think its working.

Has RS ever acknowledged the role that he has played in promoting violence(in the music industry)? If he has, I'm sure he has denied it and has probably declared himself to be a victim of hate, racism, or has proclaimed that rap is just "telling it like it is". He is in fact a victim(of greed) and has created victims of others. Black people(not all) readily lend themselves to things that make them feel good on a temporary basis, but that do not represent that which is needed for survival in a hostile world in the long run. They are easily separated from their money and this is a well known fact. This is a direct result, primarily, of generational ignorance which is a direct result of a weak and in some cases a non existent family unit. Notice I used the word "primarily" so as to NOT exclude other important factors as well so don't get it twisted. Some are reading this and saying,"he must be White"....FACT!

My those numbers are staggering and would leave any sane person baffled by the loss of young lives in such a shameful way. I cannot express outrage because I can't fathom the shear numbers as this being the first time I've heard the numbers. I applaud those of you that pull yourself away from the other trails in life and wholeheartedly address this strangeness of these useless deaths. I will say it breaks my heart to read such a article in today's news. Thank you for letting us know that the President also didn't turn his back on the deaths of the young and I do really believe that he is blazing a wonderful trail for young boys and young men who can to follow. I promise I will repeat the numbers of those whom have died over and over to others who just didn't know.

it's not his job to be in Chicago doing the bidding of the families, communities, local officials, and police.

Is someone making things up? BO is really working on something?
If you listen to him, "Jobs are my number one priority", so where does working on inner city violence fit in with that?
BO is in full on campaign mode, so he is not working on anything that is not going to translate into votes in November. Heck, he went right on campaigning in the days right after our embassy was attacked and the ambassador was killed.
So if BO has really been working on this issue, I would have to give him a "F" on it, like his handling of the economy, his handling of the unemployment rate, his handling of the national debt, his handling of the credit rating downgrades. All F's in my opinion.

"The National Forum for Youth Violence Prevention was started in six cities..."
------------------
It is a start. It will take time. It will take a lot of time to fix the mess we're in but a lot of things are in the works. If we elect Romney, we just junk all that work and start over, going where? Who knows. I don't think Romney even knows. What experience does Romney have in working in inner cities? Working with minority youth? None.

to gangbangers attend or even no about The National Forum for Youth Violence Prevention?

No, but feel good rich liberals do, and that's plenty.

Go tell it on the south side of Chicago Russel

Really? President Obama is helping stop gang violence in the inner cities? Have you watched the Chicago news lately? Young African-American people are killed every day in the City of Chicago due to gang violence. The City of Chicago is not a safe place to visit anymore. Obama has done absolutely nothing to help the disadvantaged and angry youths of the City of Chicago, in his home state. The Reverend Corey Brooks does more in one day to help the kids of Chicago than President Obama with all his power and money has done in four years. Obama and his wife have turned their backs on the minority urban youth, focusing their attention on trying to teach fat white suburban kids to refrain from eating Big Macs and drinking sugary sodas. It would be a bit hypocritical for the President to try to steer young people from street gangs and violence, since he is hobnobbing and raising money at a gangsta rapper mogul's hood (Jay Z).

Obviously, Russell Simmons doesn't frequent the south side of Chicago. But he's all to willing to profit from it through record sales glorifying the urban "gangsta".

Sorry Russell, this is not a job for the government. The plight of the black community is a direct result of the breakdown of the family unit. Too often young Black men grow up without any solid male role models. They turn to the streets, movies and rap culture for guidance, all of which glamorize a violent misogynist lifestyle that in the real world often ends in death or incarceration.
There are many studies to show the many negative effects of single parent households and until the Black community reverses this trend I am afraid there are many struggles still ahead.

Where we're the 'baby daddies' when you marched?
The problems begin in the home, regardless of race! Without a strong male influence during their formitave years, statistics show that many kids turn to gangs to fill the void in their lives.
The "father factor" directly influences poverty, emotional and behavioral problems, crime, incarceration, teen pregnancy and even childhood obesity.

While I feel for the marchers, looking to Barry for a solution is nonsensical.

Your comment is not addressed by Whites for fear of condemnation for not being politically correct and is not addressed by Blacks because of a policy of "Don't ask, don't tell" otherwise known as snitching. Bill Cosby caught a lot of hell for raising these concerns

How's that curbing violence working out in Obama's home town of Chicago?

No Russell, it starts with strong cohesive families, not government programs.

What is the unemployment rate for young black men? How many drop out of high school? & How many times have you heard Obama say anything about it?
