The New Old Face of Racism

What's Your Reaction:

One of the great challenges of our nation has been and will be to reconcile the racial tension of our past. The historical ramifications of slavery are still felt in the streets of West Baltimore, the country roads of the Mississippi Delta and corridors of the United States Congress. When our nation gathered up enough strength and courage to elect the first African-American president, in the words of our great GlobalGrind blogger, Erica Williams, "our nation did not become post-racial, but we're making every effort to be post-racist."

During the president's first year of his term, often has our nation endured various situations that dealt with race, including Skip Gates' arrest, the "birthers" movement, the "Witch Doctor" poster, amongst many others. Although we have made tremendous progress in our discussions revolving around race, one consistent reminder that we have not reached a state of high consciousness is the ability of the few to co-opt the opinions of the masses. As the Republican Party has tried hard to give itself a new face, with Michael Steele becoming the first African-American chairman in its history, it is sadly still the race-baiting commentators that dictate the agenda.

This week, Rush Limbaugh made a sickening comment in his attempt to interpret the words of Rev. Jackson, when he said that the "black frame of mind" is "terrible" and that "Tiger Woods choice of women sure didn't help it." When three Republican U.S. Senators and half a dozen evangelical preachers do it, why isn't he saying it depresses the white race? Limbaugh's bringing in Tiger's infidelity as if it's related to black culture goes back to an old and deeply evil racist connection of black men and sexual promiscuity. To use the image of the black man as the sexual predator is the oldest form of race baiting, dating back to Emmit Till and before that, the slaves on the plantation. Moreover, Rush is using Tiger as an Obama surrogate, using Tiger as a way to say that these men cannot be trusted. Rush knows exactly what he is doing by being the first to link the plight of the black man to the sorrows of Tiger Woods.

It was only a matter of time, before the new face of the Republican Party resorted back to their old tricks. And if you keep these type of games going, we will get another four years to pass our progressive agenda, because the majority of Americans, including Republicans, are tired of it. If you think, for one minute, that the real "new" face of the Republican party, the new emerging young conservative voice, want Dick Cheney or Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh as their leader, you are foolishly mistaken. Young people are tired of blue and red America...they want purple America. Young people are tired of the divisive name calling, they want to work together to solve the nation's problems. Young people are tired of fighting two wars, they want peace. So, Mr. Limbaugh and your cronies, you can continue to spew your hate all you want, because this type of racism and pain will only work for so long.

We will build a new America, together. We will build a post-racial America, together. We will build a nation that will no longer tolerate racism, new or old, together.

i just dont believe that someone as powerful as this man should be allowed to say these things without him loosing some credibility with his base the head of the republican party should feel damaged every time this man speaks, until he distances himself and his party from him

I think Mr. Simmons makes a good point. It takes a Village to raise a Nation.

Newsflash: Tiger Woods is human; America flips out.

Unfortunately, the media promulgate the concept that celebrities and sports stars are gods. The media believes that we are so unhappy with our own lives - and lack of celebrity - that we will worship these celebrities and stars as though our existence depends on the the popularity of these glamorous beings.

Come on. We have to know that celebrities are human beings who make mistakes. We all do. In fact, children raised to be prodigies often are the ones who have the toughest time negotiating the complexities of life that pertain to socialization.

But the private stuff is none of our business.

I read an article on AP last week that said the black population was very upset with Woods because along with marrying a white woman, he also cheats with them. They were already mad at him for not calling himself a black man. It said that if the girlfriends had been black, there wouldn't have been such a sense of outrage in the black community and they may have even looked at it as an amusement... doesn't this seem like black against white racism? I suppose that's ok?

One more thing.. an example of Baltimore STILL being affected by racism\slavery would be great. I've been to Baltimore and I don't remember seeing any plantations or cotton fields.
Lots of hookers and drug dealers, but no "old south".

I cannot imagine what the AP was thinking, other than tapping into a little more the madness, why they would publish such nonsense, other than for the sucker born every 15 seconds in these days. "The black population" whatever that is, and whoever they may be, has far more important matters on its plate these days, than to worry about Tiger Woods in any way, shape or form, outside of his accomplishments at his chosen profession.

I don't know how many golf tournaments you have watched, but you might have fun counting the Black faces in the gallery at the next one you watch. "The Black population" might enjoy those exploits, but guess what, 'the black population' was onto to Tiger from day one. We know our own, and we forgive what demands forgiveness. That is one aspect of 'the black population' that neither you nor AP will ever get.

Tiger is far from the first. He kind of reminds a lot of us of, in a funny kind of way, Jack Johnson.
Minus the Mann Act, of course.

Oh, and that would feature Phil Mickelson as James J. Jeffries.

I was thinking OJ. Loved by white people at first, but the first time he (might have) did something to one of their women...here comes the lynch mob.

As for the knowing our own, I feel ya. I think we know Tiger better than he knows himself. Too bad his father isn't alive to give the boy some instruction.

Reference the article please. I am not upset at Tiger at all; on the contrary, what negativity he is receiving is typical and at this point unwarranted.
If any highly visible Black person has a blemish, it is always blown way out of proportion by the media, society, bloggers on sports sites, conservative blogs, and even some on this site. For those of you who don't agree, look up the cases of Marv Alpert, Fred Couples, Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, any white evangelist, etc. etc.
The fact is that in America circa 2009, if you're Black, you have to be 3x better than white to receive equal respect. If you are so far superior (like Tiger in Golf, Kobe in basketball, The President in intelligence), there is always someone in the majority population or media who relishes trashing your legacy. Any human failing is magnified to the point of absurdity.
Enough. "Black America" is not mad at Tiger because of his choice of women, period. Seems to me this is more republican neocon white male projection.

I guess you didn't get the memo but Tiger Woods is not black, just ask him.

I think it was Wanda Sykes who said, many months ago, that the moment Tiger Woods was embroiled in scandal he would stop being multiracial and become black again. No surprise here.

It's way pass time to call on advertisers to drop Limbaugh. He promotes racial and political hatred.
Hitler used the radio to do the same thing. So did a Belgian broadcaster in Rwanda. He is in prison for promoting genocide in Rwanda. Hate radio gone unchecked will only get worse.
This is the same Limbaugh that said he wanted violence at the Democratic convention.

Infidelity has been going on since biblical times. Recall the stories of King David and Sampson.
Limbaugh has 3 failed marriages. Not sure if the problem was infidelity, inability, or something else.
He was detained after returning from Domincan Republic with someone elses viagra. Age and gender of whoever he dealt with in the Domincan Republic is unknown.

Infidelity comes in all color and poltiical persuasions. Some fo the same Republicans that were ragging on Clinton, were guilty of infidelity themselves. Should we say that Gingrich, Gov, Sanford,
Senator Ensign, cheated because of their skin color. What about that governor from New Jersey that was seeing men while married with children?

In some countries polygamy is legal, and having a mistress is acceptable. In countries like Germany
single and married men can choose a prostitute out of store front window. Again the issue is not race.

But for Rush the issue is promoting racial and political hatred to the detriment of our country.
This week I will rush and call on advertisers, and armed forces radio, to drop Rush. I hope you will join me.

You want me to do what?
10:04 AM on 12/14/2009
As someone who is center-right leaning, I, too, am sick of Limbaugh and his mouth. He's never represented my points of view, so I take his existence like I do any progressive who also doesn't represent me. If we're going to move toward a so-called post-racial world, a lot of other things have to stop. For example, it should never be ok to stereotype someone based on where they live, what type of job they have, how much or little weight they carry, where they went to college, what political affiliations they have, or whom they choose to marry, yet it happens every day with alarming frequency without diatribes from Russell Simmons or anyone else. These stereotypes hurt as much as racial ones do in the form of discrimination in hiring, equal pay, where they can live, how much they can prosper, and where they can shop. We do nothing to squelch the h@teful speeches from so-called liberal and progressive comedians about old political stereotypes--in many cases, they are applauded. Race (and, most often, sexuality) is all we focus on, when there are so many other things that are still acceptable to stereotype that affect us so much more.
11:38 AM on 12/14/2009
You are comparing apples to oranges. The judgement of a person based on their choice of whom to marry, what sort of political affiliation they have, what job they choose, where they choose to live, what they choose to eat or not eat is not the same as a racial or sexual prejudice. Why should the viewpoint of a liberal or progressive comedian be "squelched" when they are expressing their opinions in a satirical fashion of a group of people sharing the same political point of view? How is that even remotely close to Limbaugh's racist comment about Tiger Woods?
08:11 PM on 12/14/2009
Can you define "diatribe"?

You know I get almost as tired of hearing about Limbaugh and the rest as I do hearing them. Yet it must be done. The Limbaughs and Becks must be accosted at every turn. They must not be allowed to spew their diatribe unfettered.

Excellent piece, Russell.

"Young people are tired of blue and red America...they want purple America. Young people are tired of the divisive name calling, they want to work together to solve the nation's problems." Very well put; that's why, at the heart of the matter, whether they realize it or not, young people need for the old people like Limbaugh to shuffle off into the sunset, preferably out of and away from the U.S. altogether. And believe me..........a great many of us are working as hard and as fast at that as we possibly can.

Some good points to think about, Russell.......but also a country cannot be judged by the writings, orations or ramblings of a few anachronistic crackpots anymore than we are judged by the criminals in our system.
There will always be a fringe element against some race, religion or simply gender.......we have to concentrate on the vast majority that really do see beyond this and want to move forward.
We must concentrate from every spectrum on that which is false and isolated and that which is truly a process that permeates our society.
That will be up to individuals and indeed institutions to keep that dynamic moving forward and not backward.
03:31 AM on 12/14/2009
Good intentions Russ, not deeply enough stated though. That's a big problem in my mind. If you were to really write what you wanted, it would be spurned, so you, and all other Afr. Amer. people of some kind of influence have to lob softballs out there. It will be decades before the amalgamation of America is complete enough for there to be real racial change in this country. I have 2 real pet peeves: 1) The term minority being used as a racial classification, instead of it's true meaning of a lesser number. 2) Western civilizations thought processes on certain terms. Example; Black (a) destitute of light; dark, sinister; villain; evil- Or the ever popular Reverse Discrimination; Reverse (n) to go backwards; wrong direction; the opposite of the norm......These are the root type issues that a lot of folks miss altogether. In order to stamp out racism, we have 2 ways. Breed it out, or go back and really start redefining alot of the very language we know & accept today as the "norm". And I, like Russ, am being very gentle in these words because folks really don't want to hear the truth just yet.
11:13 PM on 12/20/2009
It appears that you are ever so right Chise67. Surprised to see someone else point out the inevitability of 'breeding' racism out. Its unfortunate that people cannot understand or rather support 'unity' and Divine order (what ever that may be) and move towards more controllable issues, like environmental adaptation.

We have to address the racism of all people, not just whites,to move this country forward.
10:42 AM on 12/14/2009
Why don't we ignore the racism of most people. That way we aren't giving attention and possible validity to the arguments and views of undeserved sources.

Very well written and I hope what he says about young people is the case. I have spent some time trying to connect with people on the other side of the younger generation and they seem terribly disconnected to reality in terms of racial and economic diversity and even moreso on the line between church and state. Speaking with them has been considerably less scary than I anticipated, but I am really open to hearing the fresh new conservative voices because we need a balanced govt, unrooted in bigotry and a fear of losing entitles, where it's purely fiscal and has an actual plan apart from thinking the world will go to sh*t.
