This following is an excerpt from "My Conversations with the Mystic," an interview of Sadhguru by Shekhar Kapur, the director of the Academy-Award winning film Elizabeth.

Shekhar Kapur: Many spiritual leaders are working towards creating a peaceful world and bringing down violence. What steps have you taken in that direction? Do you think you can impact the leaders of nations at war and bring about peace using your spiritual teachings or methods?

Sadhguru: There are conflicts which have been hanging upon the planet for decades for the same reasons; many different types of conflicts have happened. The spiritual process essentially focuses on bringing peacefulness and blissfulness to an individual human being. When I say an individual human being, it does not matter who he is, whether he is a leader of a nation or a business leader or just a man on the street; it works for every human being. So definitely, a spiritual process has to touch everybody, particularly people who are in positions of responsibility and power because they can make a huge difference for many people. When you are a leader of a nation or, even these days, a large business, every thought, emotion and action that you generate is impacting millions of people. Just the very thought that you generate is impacting people in so many different ways.

When such a responsibility and privilege have been placed in your hands, it is extremely important that the leaders of nations and large corporations take steps to ensure how they are within themselves, to ensure what kind of beings they are. Some work has to be done within themselves because every thought and emotion that they generate impacts so many people. When such a privilege has been given to you, that your thoughts and actions affect millions of people, it is extremely important that you conduct this privilege in a responsible manner, and you can only conduct this responsibly if there is a spiritual process within you.

2011-01-16-SadhguruandKapurWebstreamEvent.jpg When I say a "spiritual process," maybe not everybody understands this, so one way of putting it is this: it is essentially inclusiveness, that is, realizing the nature of the existence -- that you are not an exclusive entity, you are an inclusive process. And if this inclusiveness does not arise within you and you have a certain level of power in your hands, then definitely it will lead to various kinds of conflicts; there's no question about that.

So the essential aspect of the spiritual process is to raise beyond one's physical and individual identifications and into a state of all-inclusiveness. What we refer to as "spirituality" is a technology for inner well-being -- it can be imparted through simple methods which will naturally lead to a more inclusive way of experiencing life. It is not as a philosophy or a belief system. So I am striving to include all those involved in driving the economic engine into a spiritual process. Over 80 percent of the world's economy is controlled by less than 2,500 people. If even a 10 percent change happens in their hearts, the world will change.

We have worked with millions of people; we have worked in the prisons of South India and the United States. And definitely, we have worked with major leaders, and I have focused on business leaders in particular. If you look at the world 100 years ago, military leadership was the most powerful leadership. And in the last 100 years, the world has evolved into a situation where democratically-elected political leaders are the most powerful people, but even that will change. That is already beginning to change and it is going to change very rapidly in the next 10 to 15 years. You will see, in the future, the economic leaders will be the most influential people. Seeing this, I have started working with economic leaders individually on certain levels, and we have definitely made a difference in the way they make their decisions, the way they conduct their businesses.

So if we truly have to create solutions that are relevant for all, an experience of absolute inclusiveness has to happen to humanity, particularly for the leadership. And this is possible.

One of many steps Sadhguru is taking to make this world a better place. Rightly, these powerful leaders if only can deal themselves and others better, it's going to bring a huge transformation in the lives of millions. In fact, Sadhguru is conducting a leadership reatreat know as Inner Engineering Intensive for business leaders in Los Angeles from Feb 3rd to 6th next week. It's not just talk, there's lotsa actio out there!!!

I really feel that this spiritual transformation has to happen to the academic community as soon as possible. The professors and teachers are continuously involved in the process of mentoring and teaching young students who will eventually go on to become the leaders and entrepreneurs. Right now the attitude among most researchers is " I don't care what happens to the earth, I want to my research publication, I want the NSF, NIH funding" ...

I was talking to one of my friend who recently started his grad studies at the Stanford Univ , unfortunately he injured his ankle seriously. One of the first things his professor said was " Since you will be out of lab for surgery and recovery, I will have to cut down your stipend for a month "

People are ruthless, brutal when it comes to competition. People want to achieve their goals irrespective of its consequences. When most graduate students are nourished with that kind of mentality. Global warming, economic meltdown etc can not be avoided.

I really hope TRUE spiritual transformation will happen which will make students and professors more gentle and effective in terms of research.

As a Christian Raja Yogi, it is nice to hear the wisdom of Krishna. Not an exclusive being, but an inclusive process.

I speak a lot of Christ because I had to become a Yogi to know Christs righteousness DEED and we are all the Son of GOD GRACE. Not the ego exclusive self but the SELF of all mankind.

NICE thank you for sharing such WISDOM

Putting dangerous ideas and superstitions into world leader's heads is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. See the middle east for proof.

Without this right action or righteousness they still will exert the material power recking havoc on the material world anyway. Hope is right action of each individual becoming the ONE

I'm not sure what superstitions you are talking about. Pardon my understanding but if you meant spirituality as superstitions then I would disagree. Spirituality is the is going beyond the physical, as Sadhguru said, inclusiveness. How can it harm??

"Isha Yoga programs are based on tested, scientific principles." Sounds like he has the same p.r. writer as Power Balance Wristbands.

they are referring to yoga principles.

as far as the tools thing a bit off base there. mentality has much to do with emotional health not tools.

americans love their bag of tools sales pitch.

yoga has been around for thousands of years much longer than the scientific method or science. and it has been tested and shown to be beneficial to the health of the human body such as high blood pressure etc.

some people just like to follow a guru. usually the guru makes a ton of money from those people.

the hot room yoga guy wears a million dollar wrist watch and claims to be a yogi. most of his followers believe him. ie guru thing.

Agree, except you have to acknowledge the humor and irony.

Most people don't really understand what a guru is and this isn't helped by people who call themselves gurus in order to make money. There have been enough so-called spiritual leaders that have been shown to be frauds to make one suspicious of anyone speaking about spirituality.

But if you can get past the labels that raise your defenses and see what he is saying, I think you'll find Sadhguru makes a lot of sense. It doesn't cost anything to read his postings, watch his videos on YouTube, or attend the webinars where he's speaking. If what he says touches you, you can attend an Isha Yoga program and see what it's like.

"Over 80 percent of the world's economy is controlled by less than 2,500 people."

please dont tell americans that. they still think their vote counts.

"that is, realizing the nature of the existence -- that you are not an exclusive entity, you are an inclusive process."

this is a profound statement. in an individualized nation like america that worships at the altar of individualism and competition most dont have a clue what this means.

ie 1 + 1= 1. 2+2=1, etc. ie infinite is infinite, all and all,

Given the state of affairs, world leaders badly need this!
01:33 PM on 01/26/2011
Insightful. To me, this means I need to look to move beyond my own personal limitations and identifications also. It's great to hear someone speaking about this!

Yes, but not that you are gaining cupids for your action. That the whole is also yourself. Your inclusion becomes inclusive by your expression of being the whole itself.

injustice cannot be done to yourself creating JUSTICE in all that you do

As he always says, there is no universal transformation without individual transformation. Be the change you want to see in others. When so many leaders are trying to manage 100s or 1000s of minds, I wonder how many of them can manage their own. Sadhguru's programs are a powerful way to do that. I've seen top cream at companies like Microsoft take the Inner Engineering retreat and it makes them so much more different and definitely more capable.

Interesting. My interaction with MS as a Software Engineer is that they were more interested in stealing you knowledge than anything else. Very exclusively motivated

What leaders and MS should be doing is spreading justice and universal knowledge. Not becoming exclusive Nation powerful and using Monopoly and Military for exclusiveness for self advantage.

But the whole which they really are for all mankind and the universe

If spirituality involves being aware of one's inclusiveness with the rest of humanity, the chance of our world leaders, be they corporate financiers, CEOs or politicians, having a sense of such are next to nil. These people have huge egos and really do consider themselves above and separate from most of humanity, their few peers being the exception.
10:11 PM on 01/25/2011
Yes it is a challenging task but it is not impossible. There is no reason for us to not work in that direction. Whether the change happens in them or not- it is worthwhile to give our best !

A human being carries enormous potential within himself. The world can be changed in a positive way but what is needed is a powerful will to do it! Don't forget the power of one or rather even one !

I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to this matter as well. Not that I don't think people can't change, just that too often there's no motivation. Perhaps Sadhguru recognizes the challenge also as he's suggesting that if these economic leaders change only 10%, it can make a difference. Now that seems possible.
