Progressives Do NOT Hate Wealth -- a #PPSA

Posted: 05/18/2012 3:33 pm

In the first in a series of POLITICAL Public Service Announcements (#PPSA), I take on the conservative myth that liberals hate wealth and success. Nothing could be further from the truth...

We progressives don't hate money. We just want everyone to have more of it!

I hope you'll watch this, share it, like it, spread it -- and let me know what you think!

Sally - thanks for your crisp clarification of the distinction between why it is possible to "hate greed and exclusion" vs a mythology that liberals "hate wealth." Love the Gert Boyle story! - Nadine

Until I learned that a Progressive was a Liberal I was quite alarmed to learn that I did not oppose wealth. Since ALL wealth in capitalist society is derived from the exploitation of labour by capital, and the inexorable drive of capitalist society is increasing concentration, on the one hand, and, increasing imiseration, on the other, this PROGRESSIVE begs to differ. The fact that the drift or skew of the American polity to the RIGHT now means that your brand of "progressivism" is now reduced to defending the relatively meagre gains of the New Deal and the Great Society[meagre by advanced capitalist societal standards] does not mean that what you appear to believe constitutes PROGRESS.Defending women's reproductive freedom,Social Security,Medicare, and what we already have does not constitute PROGRESS if it does not change the social relations between labour and capital, and all that entails including a radical redistribution of the social surplus.

So nice for us to have Huffpo bloggers to dictate to us what us progressives think, isn't it?

And thank you for pointing out that as all of our polity moves more and more to the right, so is the progressive groupthink to the point that once-cornerstone progressive priorities--like concerns about the relationship between labor and capital, but also concerns about ongoing wars and the militarization of our society--are being sweep under the rug.

damn that was a good video... I would just love to see how the professional liars on the right, especially at fox would spin this video, because I believe it would be a bit difficult to spin this one, but then again, they are very good at their craft. Again, very well said.

The Republicans have had a "War" on Truth for decades so I'm not surprised that they try to spin We The Majority's hate for GREED and OVER-ENTITLEMENT and reverse Robin Hood-ism into a "hate for money". Money is a mere tool, and keeping it locked away in "silos" out of the country somewhere (like Romney does with his in the Cayman Islands) prevents it from circulating and being put to any good use whatsoever.... That's how they're attempting to make Obama a "one term president" - by refusing to invest in the economy and CIRCULATE the money. Economical sabotage. They should all be impeached for their blatant obstructionism of our economical recovery as far as I'm concerned,

We had a bout with totally uncontrolled wealth, it was called the age of the Robber Barons, the average worker made $2 a day, worked 12 hours a day for 6 days a week. The average family had children 50% of their children die by the age of 6 and there was no sick days or vacations. Teddy Roosevelt helped curb some of their poweer but his cousin Franklin D Roosevelt finally mad good citizens out of them. He put Social Security in to stop the elderly from ending up on poor farms and put taxes at 91% for anything over $400,000 and made bankers be bankers with Glass Steagal. We still had millionaires but they had to make this country great by paying good wages and building new factories so they could get deductions from those high taxes. Ronald REagan ended the good times for America with Supply Side Economics, you give the tax breaks without deductions and the millionaire quit investing in America. Ronald Reagan began the great deficit spending and ran the National Debt up 189% so those billionaires could but more homes and invest in the Cayamns instead of America. We are still under Supply Side and we are still deficit spending because Cheney said Reagan proved deficits don't matter. We need another FDR who said "I relish your hatred" and we need another controll on the power of wealrth by putting the taxes back to pre Reagan times.

You know that the Tea Party Republicans are not telling you the truth about Liberals not wanting to have wealth or create it...if they, the ultra-conservative Tea Party, did believe that, they would not be so afraid of them in America!!

Absolutely true: I love the wealthy, when properly cooked.
