The first big sign that my health was out of whack came when I was just fifteen years old.

A previously highly motivated and energetic teenager, I could no longer bring myself to getting out of bed in the morning. I would wake up extremely fatigued and desperate just to get a few more minutes of sleep.

This went on for years and stopped me from being the person that I was working so hard to become. I dreamed of waking up feeling radiant and ready to take on the world.

There is just something so powerful about the morning time, and those who have capitalized on this energy have found tremendous success. How you structure your morning is greatly tied to how you design your life.

When you upgrade your morning, you upgrade your whole life.

For many, taking charge of your day in just one hour in the morning can seem absolutely daunting. The key is really to integrate a few simple habits that work for you and that yield a sense of productivity.

The following three metrics are where you should be focusing your energy when setting up your morning routine. When you incorporate these metrics, you engage fulfillment and vitality as a part of your daily lifestyle and ultimately your personal legacy.

1. Start with three simple habits

Choosing three easy habits for you to adopt is plenty to build on. I first made a lengthy list of feats that I wanted to accomplish in my morning routine and I failed. It's a lot easier to get fired up and confident when you're nailing the goals you've set out. So start small. Pick three things that you know you can commit to day after day.

What you can try: Making the bed, ten jumping jacks, or any of the habits below in the second metric.

2. Make nutrition a must

In the morning, hydration and energy are of utmost importance. Your body needs fuel, and much like you would never drive off with your gas tank empty -- don't leave home without giving your body what it needs to thrive throughout the day. It's harder to function and feel great when your body and brain are working off of tight reserves. When you make morning nutrition a priority, everything else becomes so much easier.

What you can try: A glass of warm lemon water immediately upon waking, drinking a green power smoothie, or having a ready-to-go breakfast that you can take with you to work.

3. Create a sacred practice

Having a sacred morning practice opens you up to the positive and abundant energy that is available to all of us. The possibilities are endless when you set aside some quiet time for yourself, your goals, and your vision. This is your chance to be grounded and centered in who you want to be and what you want out of your life.

While the word sacred can suggest a spiritual flair, your practice can be as analytical or divine as you'd like. For some people getting mentally organized for the day is enough, while others will relish in deeper reflection.

What you can try: Writing down three things you are grateful for, meditating and visualizing, or preparing your day planner.

Making the most of your morning is a small price to pay for the expansive momentum it will create in your life today and beyond!
