This week, the WCG team and I are headed to New York City to participate in the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), a yearly meeting where global leaders convene to forge solutions to the world's most pressing challenges by connecting, collaborating and making effective and measurable commitments. During this same week, at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), world leaders, civil society representatives, UN officials, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and development experts will gather to discuss pressing global issues including poverty, disease, and environmental degradation. I'm especially looking forward to all of the important discussions that will take place around Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG-5), which is the world's "to-do" list to improve maternal health by reducing maternal mortality and providing women with universal access to reproductive health.
This week is going to be important for another reason as well.
Thursday, September 26th, is World Contraception Day, a day when people like me and my team at WCG elevate the conversation around access to contraception. My hope is that it's no coincidence that World Contraception Day falls in the middle of a week where leaders and innovators come together to talk about how to improve the world. There are more than 220 million women around the world who want modern contraception but cannot get it. We need to conclude this week in NY with significant commitments funded and a plan for implementation. WomanCare Global will be part of the global solution because we provide access to affordable, quality reproductive health products through a sustainable value chain in more than 100 countries. We look forward to working with partners to make a true change for women and girls. We do not have a moment to waste.
