The morning after a snowy night, I can gauge how challenging my morning commute will be before I even get out of bed: I just look at the size of the drifts collected on the leafless tree outside my window. If the branches are dusted like powdered sugar, there's no problem; tufted like a large marshmallow, I'll put my boots on; piled high and lofty like meringue, I'd better call the office hotline to find out whether or not I need to go to work.

On those days, I love to stay home and cook. There's something magical about donning fuzzy slippers, firing up the oven, and baking something sweet while the world outside is tucked under a white, downy blanket.

The recent gentle flurries in New York -- and the snow in 49 of the 50 U.S. states! -- made me think of SAVEUR's collection of snowy desserts. From cool Peppermint Caramels to literally snowdrift-like Oeufs à la Neige, these wintry white sweets are a good excuse to stay out of the cold and get into the kitchen. (Though if you want somebody else to make one for you, you could go to Eleven Madison Park and try chef Daniel Humm's contribution to the SAVEUR 100, his snowball-like Milk and Honey dessert.)

Semlor (Cardamom Cream Puffs)
1 of 12
The Swedes enjoy semlor, cardamom buns filled with cream, on Fat Tuesday, when flurries of snow often accompany the Scandinavian winter's last gasp.

My Swedish mother makes the most wonderful semlor on fat tuesday. I don't know if this is common but we make ours with a thick layer of almond paste (I think it's almond paste..she makes it from scratch) and then put the whipped cream on and then the top layer of the bun. Oh, and that's the other thing we call them buns, never heard puffs before. The end result with the two semlor halves, a patty of almond paste and whipped cream looks like a confectionary sandwich. I eat mine in a bowl of milk, which apparently some other Swedish people do, as well. They are so good! The cardamon is what makes them so good. Don't be fooled by the buns IKEA sells.

Semlor are to die for. If you are looking for a recipe, the singular of the plural "semlor" is SEMLA. They are not supposed to be served until Fat Tuesday, but in Sweden they appear on store shelves a lot earlier than that.

Where's the recipe for the cardamom puffs. The coconut cake looks great, but I highly recommend Bobby Flay's. It's time consuming but wonderful.

Sorry to burst your bubble but cheese Paska is a Ukrainian tradition that was adapted by Russians. Might want to research it and fix it although it is doubtful you will. Ukraine and Russia are not the same thing. It is the same story over and over.

Yup. Just like attributing polka, which is a Czech's dance, to Poles. I guess for Americans it's all Eastern Europe (and beyond), so it's all the same.
