I love the old joke from comedian Steve Martin, and I paraphrase, "I was really bummed out when I found out that death thing also applied to me".

When I look in the mirror, I see evidence every day how fast life is moving. Although my daughter Tess suggested some hair coloring, I am embracing my changing reflection as a reminder to make the most out of every day. I am appreciative of the fact that life is short. It reminds me to live everyday as if it is my last. Maybe more people should get the memo.

The Wednesday night prior to Thanksgiving, my friends have a tradition that started way back in high school of getting together for a night of shooting pool (it use to be a football game in our glory days), great food, a few drinks, and a lot of laughter. This year as we sat around the bar, we received an update regarding someone's brother who has been fighting a brain tumor the last couple of years that has now entered into stage four. Clearly pained as he struggled through the update, he said something that stuck with me. As we all raised our glasses in a toast, he said of his fifty three year old brother, "If you could write a book on how to deal with life at this stage, my brother should write it". He went on to talk about what a positive attitude he has had as he deals with inevitable. What I knew of this person is that he enjoyed life, was committed to his company and to his family.

My friend's comment made me think of how I would deal with the same dire situation. Every day we get so caught up in the routine of everyday life. When was the last time you thought about the end of your life? How much more would one accomplish if you kept that in mind? Would you take more risks?

"We are all worm food" is a thought that should liberate you. It should allow you to take risks. It should allow you to love. It should allow you to forgive. It should allow you to try things you were afraid of. It allows you to take the trip you always wanted. It should allow you to sing on stage. It should allow you to start a business. It should allow you to enjoy your kids, parents, and friends. It should allow you to volunteer and donate time and money. It should allow you to have a great attitude.

As we conclude 2013, it is important to reflect and learn from our personal experiences throughout the year. However, for many this tends to be an easy and rather shallow reflection since 2013 was in many ways no different than all the other years.

"Do Not Go Where the Path May Lead, Go Instead Where There Is No Path and Leave A Trail."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

What are some things you have always dreamed of doing but were afraid to take the risk?

What are some things you can do every day to get more enjoyment or fulfillment out of life?
