Forty-five years ago this week, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

It was mankind at its best.

And this week, that momentous news story was at the end of the Nightly News, because the big stories were events that showed mankind at its worst.

And the worst part is that so many people don't seem to care.

Instead of being horrified and outraged by the senseless slaughter of innocents in the sky and from the sky, instead of questioning how violence and war will ever bring about a just peace, so many of us hide behind feeble excuses, dubious claims of moral superiority, and a complete indifference to human suffering.

I refuse to accept this sickening state of affairs. I refuse to accept that war and indiscriminate killing is something that will always be a part of our world.

I know that mankind is capable of so much beauty, so much wonder, so much love and so much that can help people live a better life.

I know all that is possible, because it happened on July 20, 1969.
