Dorothy Parker once remarked of Los Angeles that it was 72 suburbs in search of a city. But twice a year, it unites around the table as a grand one-of-a-kind metropolis. And what powerful force can bring such disparate people together under a single banner? Food, of course. And the bi-annual event that showcases the L.A. dining scene? DineLA's Restaurant Week -- the premier opportunity for Angelenos to experience the best of their city's cuisine without breaking the bank.

To help kick off the event, Chef Micah Fields (The Restaurant at The Standard, Downtown LA) provided a select group of diners with a sample of what was in store for the city's diners -- from his colorful salmon sashimi with avocado crema and Sriracha soy foam (you read that right) to braised beef tongue, paired with Monterey's Chalone Vineyards Merlot.

Fields' entrées included ahi and charred uni with a citrus vinaigrette, roasted baby chicken, and savory pumpkin and sage risotto. And the chef topped it off with desserts such as the bacon waffle and chocolate gelato sandwich.

If you're anything like me, then just reading about a delicious meal is enough to whet the appetite. And now is the time to satisfy that appetite because the deals being offered allow patrons to visit new neighborhoods, sample their way through exotic tasting menus and explore dishes that might have been too adventurous at full price.

And furthermore, it's an opportunity to get out there and meet your fellow food lovers. I hope to see you at the table.
