In September 2015, the US Surgeon General issued a call to action promoting "Walking and Walkable Communities."

That initiative is named "Step It Up!" and is commemorating its one-year anniversary with a Twitter Chat on Tuesday October 11 and a hashtag event on Wednesday October 12.

The Surgeon General will co-host the Twitter Chat on walking and the Step It Up! challenge with the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, America Walks, and Safe Routes to School.

It is an honor to assist with amplifying the important message of the US Surgeon General and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health.

The summary of the Surgeon General's call to action emphasizes how essential it is for increased support by communities to provide improved opportunities for safe pedestrian activity.

The specific purpose of the Call to Action is "to increase walking across the United States by calling for improved access to safe and convenient places to walk and wheelchair roll and by creating a culture that supports these activities for people of all ages and abilities."

The initiative's strategic goals include:

1) Make walking a national priority
2) Design communities that make it safe and easy to walk for people of all ages and abilities
3) Promote programs and policies to support walking where people live, learn, work, and play
4) Provide information to encourage walking and improve walkability
