Republicans Renew War on Women

Posted: 08/01/2012 7:00 am

Starting today, critical women's preventive health services will be available to women, free of co-pays or deductibles -- a hard-fought benefit for women in Nevada and across the country that is long overdue.

Yet on the eve of the implementation of these historic benefits for women, my Republican colleagues were still trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act -- the very law that offers these benefits along with many other crucial protections for women.

Beginning today, for the first time, new insurance plans will be required to cover -- without any co-pays -- well-woman visits, contraception, breastfeeding support and supplies, screening for gestational diabetes, screening and counseling for domestic violence, as well as testing for HPV and HIV.

An estimated 47 million women nationwide, including nearly 400,000 women in my home state of Nevada, are expected to benefit from this new policy.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, new insurance plans are already required to cover preventive care like mammograms, colonoscopies, blood pressure checks, prenatal exams and childhood immunizations without cost-sharing. Yet Republicans are so intent on blocking women's preventive services like contraception coverage from taking effect, they are willing to risk national security.

Yesterday, the Republican leader proposed voting to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act , a move that threatened to derail the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 -- legislation that is critical to our national security and completely unrelated to health care.

Covering preventive health services for women is long overdue. While women are more likely to need preventive health services, they often have less ability to pay for them than men. On average, women have lower incomes, and a greater share of their salary is consumed by out-of-pocket health costs.

Half the women in this country have delayed preventive care because of price tags, according to the Commonwealth Fund. Millions of American women delay doctor's visits, yearly, because they can't cover co-pays, or miss pills to save money.

It is no wonder the U.S. has one of the highest rates of unintended pregnancy of industrialized countries.

That is why, fifteen years ago, I began a bipartisan initiative with Senator Olympia Snowe to expand access to contraception for women. As part of this effort, we passed a law that gave federal employees access to contraception. When this policy took effect in 1999, despite the warnings of our critics, premiums did not go up.

Yet what began as a bipartisan, commonsense proposal fifteen years ago has turned into an unfortunate debate in Congress. Many of my Republican colleagues are downplaying the importance of covering preventing health care for women, or trying to repeal health reform altogether.

They've blocked efforts to give women who want it, access to contraception, and they've shown little interest in protecting the health of victims of sexual assault.

Putting ideology ahead of science is inexplicable.

I will continue doing everything I can to protect a woman's right to health care. Today's implementation of new women's preventive benefits is just the beginning.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, by 2014, almost 19 million uninsured women will be eligible for comprehensive health coverage, women may no longer be charged more for the same policy as men, and women cannot be denied coverage because they have a pre-existing condition.

Asking American women to continue denying themselves the care they need is unacceptable. Only by focusing on America's best interest, rather than our own political interests, will we have a stronger, healthier future together.

How does challenging the Affordable Care Act equate to a 'war on women' when dismantling the program would also take preventive care away from men?

Politicians turning one gender against the other to win vote, not surprising though, cause they would sell their own mother if it can get them 2 votes more.

"women may no longer be charged more for the same policy as men"

The bottom line is women pay more for health care because they submit far more claims than men do over a lifetime . . .

It's the same as young male drivers who pay a lot more for auto insurance because they as a group submit a lot more claims than young females.

However, many of women's health care claims are related to men (ie - pregnancy, birth control, STDs, etc), unlike young male drivers whose driving habits are unrelated to their relationships with females.

So does that make women dependent on men?

Thank you again, Harry Reid, for standing up for women and for all of us in the face of the destructive ultra-partisan, 100% obstructionist GOTeaP onslaught against working Americans and their families. We are very proud of you and stand with you in support of the ACA and President Obama. Four more years!!!

Romney can disprove the "lie" by releasing his tax returns like so many candidates before him.

What's he hiding?

This is why this country needs to join the rest of the civilized world and get a single, unified healthcare system. We pay more for less in this country. Everyone dislikes the healthcare system. But as soon as some change is put forth we have all sorts of special interests convincing people otherwise.
01:53 PM on 08/05/2012
What changes were put forth to our health care system again?

Unified plans for 300+ million people rarely work well.
03:45 PM on 08/05/2012
So we can make health care equal, equally bad for every living person! Yep, that is great, equality is the corner stone of socialism, Marxism and communism.

I think it is the world health organization that ranks the US on par with Cuba. And why, because in Cuba everyone has health coverage, it's sub standard but it is EQUALLY bad for everyone. Now, why don't you fools go to Cuba for your treatment.

Gee, if it is so good, why do so many of the English, Canadian have "outside health insurance"? We know, it is because the basic, equal coverage is so bad if you get really SICK.

I guess everyone that is poor gets to die of the same, equal treatment. Ignorance is bliss!

My Canadian relatives were furious at the misrepresentations of their system as bad....and they have said over and over, they would NEVER allow Ottawa to change to a broken system like ours. I needed a brain surgery, and the Cigna ins. Told me nope, I could be maintained on morphine. But I couldn't work on that crap. I fought it for months, and they finally gave in. The surgery was successful and I went back to work. I was strong enough ( and stubborn & desperate enough) to FIGHT for it. And after I have been paying for insurance for 40+ years without a big cost like this. Just wait until it happens to you.

i am a canadian. my mother went to the hospital for pain in her gut, and in 2 days they found she had a blockage, removed said blockage, found it was cancer, immediately she got put on chemo, a nurse visited her everyday of the time she was on chemo, and not one red cent came out of her bank account, or any of her childrens. she is fine today.
i had a gut ache for 12 hours, a month ago, went to emerg, got a Dr. to see me in 10 minutes, got put on an iv drip for dehydration because i had been throwing up till i was throwing up bile, along with a pain killer. I was on my way home in less than 2 hours with an appointment to see a surgeon 2 days later, and am scheduled for surgery to remove my galblatter. i have no additional insurance, and i have not paid for any of this treatment.

I know the Americans like to use us canucks as the scary excuse for not wanting health care, but the truth is, we DO NOT NEED EXTRA INSURANCE to get the best health care. There are certainly extra perks you can buy, like private rooms, dental, prescriptions, and eye glasses, but for the majority, if not all your health care, we got it covered.
I'm 56, and have had many reasons to be in need of health care, & not any "extra" anything was required.

I was sitting in the State house gallery as our Teabag legislature voted to repeal birth control laws we have had on the books for decades, created with the GOP AND the church. I heard the scum trashing my right to birth control. Oh, and the Blount Rubio bill also will allow your Christian Scientist CEO to pull your coverage for chemo, sugary and meds.....and your Mormon boss to pull coverage for any issues from drinking beer...yup go ahead and read the bill...do the google. They also in 9 months have put in many dozens of anti- equal pay, anti-abortion rights, anti- education in title X cover...I am old enough to remember that the rich girls always got the abortions before Roe, as the working class family girls had shotgun marriages...so don't blabbering about class
