A Truth Commission to Investigate Bush-Cheney Administration Abuses

We have just emerged from a time when White House officials often acted as if they were above the law. That was wrong and must be fully exposed so it never happens again.

The Huffington Post community and the netroots played a vital role pursuing, demanding, and exposing the Bush-Cheney administration's numerous abuses. But there's still more we don't know, and more we must uncover, about the misdeeds of the past eight years.

That is why I proposed the idea of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate abuses during the Bush-Cheney administration. These abuses may include the use of torture, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, and executive override of laws.

I have set up a petition at BushTruthCommission.com, and I hope you will sign it to urge Congress to consider establishing a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the Bush-Cheney administration's abuses. We already have over 7,000 signatures, but we need to hit 10,000 signatures -- or more -- by next week, to build momentum behind this idea.

During the past several years, this country has been divided as deeply as it has been at any time in our history since the Civil War. It has made our government less productive and our society less civil. In this week when we begin commemorating the Lincoln bicentennial, there is need, again, "to bind up the nation's wounds." President Lincoln urged that course in his second inaugural address some seven score and four years ago.

Rather than vengeance, we need a fair-minded pursuit of what actually happened. The best way to move forward is getting to the truth, finding out what happened, so we can make sure it does not happen again.

The Obama administration has already made huge strides to restore the Constitution and renew our commitment to international law after eight corrosive years. But we must read the full page on this dark chapter in American history before we can turn it for good, which is why I feel so strongly about investigating what really happened.

 I hope you agree.

On Monday, I delivered a speech at Georgetown University where I outlined my ideas about why we need a truth and reconciliation commission and how it could work.

A truth and reconciliation commission would be tasked with seeking answers. It would provide Congress and the American people with a shared understanding of the failures of the recent past, so we do not repeat them in the future.

Thank you, in advance, for taking action at www.BushTruthCommission.com to prevent history from repeating itself and joining me to support the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission.

Dear Senator Leahy,
Nowhere have you provided an estimate of what your Commission will cost. Nothing in the Federal Government happens without an appropriation. Your letter to the GAO: http://citizenoversight.com/pdf/blwb.pdf seeking a study did not yield anything precisely because there was no appropriation for it. If a GAO study cannot be got going without dedicated funding, how can a massive enterprise like the Truth and Reconciliation Commission?

Sorry Senator Leahy, I can't sign it because if people are not held responsible for their crimes, those crimes will be committed again and again, each time more grievously than the time before. I support your call for an investigation, but those responsible must be held accountable.

I totally agree with hardlyhikin re: a "truth commission". We ALREADY know Bush & Co. lied and authorized torture. Torture is a war CRIME. People who commit crimes need to be held accountable for their actions. If no one is above the law, then do what is required by the law: investigate, prosecute and punish. It is NOT a witch hunt and the country will not screech to a halt because justice is being done. The world is watching what we DO about this. I am writing to my Senators to call for full blown Senate investigations and hearings like they had for Watergate and Iran Contra. Think about it: if America tortures, then Americans are torturers. It makes us all a party to this mess. I do not want this stain to remain on our country. Clean up the mess and THEN move on.

A "truth commission" is nothing more than a witch hunt for a subset of the democratic party that refuses to focus on the real problems at hand and get this country turned around.

It means spending time and money allowing people to make high sounding speeches that a year later will have no effect except the mass of money they have wasted. Nothing but one political party trying to paint the other party as the "bad guys" at the waste of the taxpayers money.

Perhaps you are correct. After all, the truths in the 9/11 Commission had no effect on Bush and Cheneys behavior whatsoever. But then they didn't care what We The People thought. However, we have a new administration that might take this issue more seriously. I certainly hope that President Obama and VP Joe Biden doesn't pull the "executive privilige" load of crap like the previous administration did. I, for one, want to know the truth. Bush shrouded his activities in secrecy which is suspicious behavior. We know the damage the Bush administration did on some levels. It could be worse than we thought. I want to know if they knew the 9/11 attack was going to happen and did nothing to stop it.

They know what we the people think they won twice.

Re: the 9/11 attacks, the intel was there. Enough pieces of the puzzle were there and presented to Bush, Rice etc. at a briefing in early Aug. They chose to ignore it.

Lets start the investigation at the beginning, lets start with the invasion of Iraq, how about the Bush goverment invading a sovereign country without a U.N. security council resolution, Resolution 1441 did not authorize Bush to invade Iraq. All war crimes and crimes against humanity that accured in Iraq, and are very well documented, was only made possible by Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq. If only he would have listened to the U.N. when told not to invade. Bush clearly violated the U.N. charter not to use armed force without U.N. permission. you can use force as self- defence but not in anticipation of self-defence

We need to start this investigation back to when Bush was inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2001. He promptly started illegal wiretapping then. On Feb. 27, 2001, Qwest Communications refused to turn over their customers personal information without a warrant as they surely should have. Google the date.

The question is why the wiretapping began? Were Bush and Cheney wanting to spy on their political opponents to advance the New World Order? Did they have information on the pending 9/11 attacks and did nothing so as to go to wars? We need answers and the questions about their illegal activities should start since their first day on the job.

Senator, you need to ask the President to have the Justice Dept. launch a criminal investigation. I will say it again: read "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder", by Vincent Bugliosi, successful prosecutor of the Tate-LaBianca ("Manson Family") murders and 25 others. The case for the prosecution is there for the taking. Any federal or state prosecutor would have jurisdiction; all you need to do is to find one with the cojones to bring the case before a grand jury.

Bush will be visiting Canada on March 17th. While he's in Canada, Bush *IS* subject to provisions of Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act.

This Act incorporates the 1998 war crimes Treaty of Rome, and the Agreement for the prosecution and punishment of the major war criminals of the European Axis, signed at London on August 8, 1945; and the Proclamation by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, dated January 19, 1946.

Bush can be arrested under the provisions of Section 6 of the Act - 'Offenses Outside Canada'.

In fact, it appears that nothing in the Criminal Code of Canada precludes an ordinary citizen of Canada from making a citizen's arrest of Bush for crimes under this Act. Section 494 of the Criminal Code provides citizens with all the power they require.

Mandatory life imprisonment is called for where intentional death occurs as a result of the accused's actions:

2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1) or (1.1)

(a) shall be sentenced to imprisonment for life, if an intentional killing forms the basis of the offence; and
(b) is liable to imprisonment for life, in any other case.

Do the same standards apply to Great Britain, Australia, and Poland, can Tony Blaire be arrested and tried? The last I heard England did ratify with the ICC.

We need to search until we find all the pizza boxes full of plastic-wrapped cash with Bush & Cheney's name on them... They exist.
10:30 PM on 02/15/2009
WHAT?

Hmmm......I wonder what was in the boxes Cheney was "moving" when he sprained his back?????
04:14 PM on 02/15/2009
So if I commit a crime, all I have to do is make sure people know about it, fully know about it of course, then I can get off scott-free? Cool.
03:39 PM on 02/15/2009
Where's the investigation on the collapse of the financial markets? Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Barney Frank, Chris Cox, and the rest. These DC phonies wouldn't dare look into what created this mess. JUST GET BUSH! Bush is gone people, FOCUS. There is a good chance of preventing this from happening again in the future if we can identify what the root cause was. If we don't identify it, we are doomed to repeat it.
01:03 AM on 02/16/2009
You just made the case for prosecuting Bush, bobbyv, FOCUS..."so it won't happen again!!!" Good job! Also, who presided over and was a proponent of the de-regulation and lack of oversight that allowed this economic crisis to unfold????? FOCUS. Bush and all his Repub. toadies and enablers. Did you ever consider that watching all that Bush was getting away with just might have emboldened these big shot CEO's ? Wouldn't you like to see them held accountable and prosecuted for what they did if they committed crimes? Why are they any different from Bush?

I think these folks have seen the polls and are opting for the lesser of two evils. Unfortunately, with the commission, nothing changes. The perps go on to enjoy their lives. Meanwhile, the rest of us enjoy ours less and less as they continuously feed us the same message_ "We are in control and we will run this country as it benefits us to do so."
I have sent Leahy a message regarding his aiding and abetting criminals and refused to sign on for his attempt at a cover up. Every one should target this senator overwhelmingly to send a strong message to him and his peers_ "We are in control and prosecutions are demanded."
Failure to do so will come back to haunt them.

We are weary of weak-willed, corporate sponsored Congress that never listens to the millions of emails and letters we besiege them with.

From 911, to the phony war on Iraq, to the bankster's bailout- virtually all of the Congress rolled over for Bush- over, and over.

You guys have pensions for life, unlike the rest of us. So I ask- what are you afraid of?

Senator Leahy, I like you, and like the idea of a commission, but just have the DOJ launch a full scale investigation. We all know already who is guilty, and why, we just need the evidence shown in a court of law.

I have enjoyed the insight and great knowledge the contributions of avid readers have noted with al fact based realities- Hold Criminal Culpablity- as well know in busines of private sector- government and Intel- people get fired over Poor Perfomance and the Actor's Intent to commit harms that break Fed Criminal Laws the United States code books-- either the FSGO or USSG-

The Rules of DAG- DOJ and The Civil Rights are black and white and in english- for clarity-rule of law

Enron and WorldComm have nothing on these creative debacles of high level of Malfeasences-

Umm - Senator Leahy, there is already an organization charged by the Constitution to investigate the Executive branch. It is called Congress. Why would you want to set up ANOTHER commission to study this? Why would you think they will come up with anything different from the first 2 dozen commissions & studies? It has already been over investigated. Could it be that a politically motivated study could find different results 8 years after the fact?

I'd like to see some sun shined on areas that it has NOT been shown previously: Frank, Dodd, Geithner's role in creating the sub-prime, Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac mess and then being in charge of the cover up of that?
11:00 AM on 02/15/2009
what I don`t get is why congress stood back and ALLOWED all these shenanigans for 8 YEARS-----why did no-one stand-up to the corruption WHILE IT WAS OCCURING----hum????????????????
