Bushbots and Dembots

I would say the Democrats are bereft of new ideas, but I am fervently hoping they're just being shy. As for conservatism, after five years of Bush I'm not sure what that is besides lower taxes.

Yesterday I commented on how many Bushbots are compelled to post comments on this site, and boy did I stir up a hornet's nest! Many supporters of our President, a man with whom I have had one or two differences, again felt the need to rise to his defense. One comment I particularly savored came from someone calling himself "Ruslfish", who took exception to my characterization of the battling Bushbots. What I wrote was: "you can almost see the bulging veins on their foreheads and the flecks of spittle on their lips".

"Ruslfish" had this to say: "I am not so easily pigeonholed because I think you're a moron."

I am sorry I pigeonholed you, Ruslfish. I won't make that mistake again.

He then went on to suggest that I "try respecting alternative thought". Will do, Ruslfish. And thank-you for contributing to that process.

There are certainly plenty of bulging veins and flecks of spittle on the left. I must say, though, since the so-called "left" has been completely out of power for five years, reasonable people might agree that their bulging veins and flecks of spittle are a result of the frustration inherent in that situation. The anger on the right, which has held the reins of power for that entire time, is slightly harder to comprehend.

Actually, as far as alternative thought goes, I would prefer to see more of it on the HuffPo. Clearly, when it comes to the conservative point of view, Greg Gutfeld and Danielle Crittenden are not enough (I am not being ironic here). It is people like Christopher Hitchens and Andrew Sullivan, writers brave enough to challenge established orthodoxies again and again, who are the most interesting thinkers right now. The hacks, liberal AND conservative, are not up to the task. I would say the Democrats are bereft of new ideas, but I am fervently hoping they're just being shy. As for conservatism, after five years of Bush I'm not sure what that is besides lower taxes.

The vitriolic heckling that passes for discourse, while entertaining for a time, ultimately is like watching a tire spin in mud. A political fundamentalism has taken hold and it serves no one, Bushbot or Dembot. Everyone needs to get over it.
