Driving around Fort Riley with a Kerry-Edwards bumper sticker on my car was not the most popular or recommended thing to do in the election year of 2004. Most soldiers on the base were still very pro-Bush and supportive of the war in Iraq. Americans had still not come down off the 9/11 defensive mentality that President Bush had been manipulating to justify his Iraq war policy. And the Republicans still had a monopoly on being the party that was perceived to be most supportive of the troops.

I knew what was at stake in the 2004 presidential election. A possible change of course for the war in Iraq or more of the same incompetence, arrogance, and disregard for helpful outside opinion that had plagued the Bush administration for the entirety of their first tenure.

The true reality of the war was kept secret from the American people and was shadowed out with macho slogans like "bring em on" and "we'll fight the terrorists in Baghdad so we don't have to fight them in Boston." It was nothing short of pure nonsense that was proven to be an effective smokescreen for the Bush administration to taint Iraq with 9/11, Al-Qaeda, and the war on terror.

Despite the atmosphere of intolerance for dissent by soldiers in the ranks... I was never persecuted by the military for being a Democrat, supporting John Kerry, or being against the war. Of course there were the individual spats between myself and others who didn't share my political views, but all-in-all, the men I served with were the best of the best who would put their lives on the line in a second for any American regardless of politics.

Once president Bush had won reelection I knew we would continue on the same disastrous path for another four years. There would be more unnecessary war, tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, disdain for the poor and middle-class, and a continuation of the total unshared sacrifice of America as a whole.

I'm just so very thankful that we have less than one year left of this tragedy that is the Bush administration.

Now we can set our sights on the 2008 election with hope that a new leader will bring about the change we so desperately need. I had supported John Edwards for his bottom-line plan to end the war in Iraq and his strong populist views that I believe to be the remedy for the setbacks facing America.

Now that John Edwards is no longer running I have many choices as to whom I can support for president. However, it is not a hard choice for me to make being that the biggest issue for America, in my opinion, is the war in Iraq.

I believe that the war in Iraq has been the precursor to most of the problems we are dealing with today socially and economically. It has drastically changed our foreign policy for the worst and damaged our image in the world community. It has hopelessly divided us here at home. It has substantially decreased our national security by expending our military to a breaking point. And the war has overwhelmingly contributed to our national debt rising to astronomical figures that will take generations to pay off.

We have to stop the bleeding. Who can do that?

Barack Obama had the prescience and foresight to oppose the war in Iraq before it started. His plan to end the war is sound and sincere. His record demonstrates his willingness and desire to bring our troops home without hesitation. He will follow through by making sure that our troops are cared for upon their return. He is armed with the moral authority to once again engage our allies in the world community and heal the wounds that were inflicted upon those relationships by the Bush administration. He will promote peace in the Middle East with strong diplomatic efforts that will bring all nations of that region to the bargaining table without prejudgment and non-starter ultimatums.

Most importantly, Barack Obama will unify the American people. His success in reaching out to people of all generations and walks of life is unmatched. He is equipped with a tremendous ability to inspire people all over the world to once again believe in America. His message of change and hope has crystallized with the American people and is spearheading this entire presidential race from coast to coast.

Barack Obama is simply the epitome of the American dream.

John,

Wonderful post !

I just love the way you state true facts. Too often in our days of political correctness, when everyone's feelings must be respected, some truths are just implied, or tainted with skepticism, or even sarcasm, because being sure, being convinced, is not fashionable : One has to have doubts, one has to be nuanced in one's opinions, to appear as a smart and open-minded person.

I also wish for Obama to be elected. I'm very optimistic for Americans'future under such a charismatic man. Americans have been misled by their president for the last 7 years, but they are great people who are able to restore their collective nation and their individual lives under a great leader as Obama is.

The current government has used and abused both his soldiers and his citizens. A government is meant to serve and work for its citizens. The perversity of this government is that all of its members (not to mention the members'buddies) only took advantage of the American citizens, asking the soldiers to sacrifice their lives on the altar of their greed and lust for personal enrichment, asking the citizens to work and pay taxes when the wealthiest buddies and dishonest health insurance companies could beneficit of tax cuts.

This perversity and corruption will disappear with Obama. He's honest. The American Dream will blossom again, under the leadership of an honest man.

The Denver Post will endorse Hillary on Sunday. The part of their endorsement I find most compelling is ...

"Clinton is well prepared to oversee a careful disengagement from Iraq and to serve as the military and diplomatic leader of the free world. She served with distinction on the Senate Armed Services Committee, where she mastered the intricate details of national and international security. Obama has no comparable experience on military or diplomatic issues."

Obama has dreams and hope where Hillary has plans. And that is what is best America. America needs Hillary.

I really respect your blogs, John, and you make a compelling case.

I just cannot bring myself to vote for Obama in the primary because I think he missed the boat on Health Care, our most important domestic issue, in my opinion.

I am not voting for Clinton either because of her stance on the war.

I will vote for whichever one becomes the nominee, and I hope they run as a ticket.

For the primary, I am voting for the one Democrat in the race who is right on the issues, Sen. Mike Gravel, even though he has no chance to win and may not even get a single delegate. At least Gravel supports gay marriage without shame.

But, I look forward to your next blog. Keep writing. Your voice is important!

I am voting Obama for a variety of reason, some emotional and some logical.

Here is the logic:

Obama will get ALL democratic voters, most Independents and some Republicans. In addition he has been shown he can awaken the sleeping giant of youth voters. In addition he will get a large number of never voted. He will not awaken the napping giant of wacko republican voters. The will not want to vote for McCain but will stay home as they have no gripes with Obama.

Hilary will not get all democratic voters, will not get Independents and will not get any republicans. She is trying for the old guard democratic base of older voters and not younger voters. In addition she will awaken the napping giant of wacko republican voters that do not like McCain but will come out just to see she looses.

A Obama/McCain show down give voters an honest and compelling choice for our nation. Both have made it very clear where they stand on this war and future wars. Obama says there is a another way and McCain says there will be more war, more death, more destruction. A lot more. Here is a clear choice between that past and the future. Voters will get to pick a path.

Hillary/McCain offers no real or compelling choice. They are political twins. Hilary has not been clear on her view of tis war or future wars, she morphs depending on her audience, she kowtows to republicans, she STILL has not explained why-with all her experience-she voted for the current disaster war. There is no clear distinction between the past and future. They are both icons of the past. They can not escape this truth.

Obama is an emotional speaker and leader. He is a joy to listen to and to believe in.

For you logic people out there...think it through, make the right choice the 1st time.

California...VOTE OBAMA on 2/5/08...give him what he needs to succeed so that the American people have a real choice in November.

Wonderful post, John. Thank you sincerely for your service and your voice. People like you who have actually been there and know what has happened in Iraq can change minds. I loved your video for VoteVets. Keep speaking out... I hope we, Americans, have enough sense to not let what happened in 04 happen again. I dream of waking up in 09 with Obama as my president, I'm sick of the last 8 years with no president, because I certainly can't call GWB my president. I can't even wrap my head around what the world could be like if Obama is elected! I'm excited! Obama '08!

Ughhhhhh, tell me about it. I'm at Polk; imagine what it's like having Obama stickers on your vehicle or wearing Obama apparel in the PX.

I am very pleased I read you blog Mr. Bruhns. I feel a kindred spirit from your comments. I have been impressed and at times in awe of Sen. Obama's thoughtful insights in many areas of concern. I am especially thankful for Americans who are not afraid to stand against the brazenly arrogant and inept Bush admistration. Your service to your country is greatly appreciated. But your courage of conviction, and willingness to so succintcly point out the hypocrisy and shallow-sloganesque operation that was Bush's foreign policy without fear of reprisal, is truly meaningful to me.

Thank you and your family for telling us the truth.

With all due respect to you, BO's judgement went out the window with the Tony Rezco fiasco. That was bad judgement. And it took what, till 2006-2007 to realize bad money needed to be refunded or donated to "charity."

BO is taking advantage of the American people by doing what he said he wouldn't..."telling them what they WANT to hear, rather than what they NEED to hear." The man is sermonizing, and painting a pretty picture...though he knows getting there will be a major problem.

He may be someone you want to have a beer with, but we've been down that path before which led to disastrous results. The nation, at this time need experience, not what if's, not "look at all of the pretty pictures" lingo.

Maybe one day, just not today!

Good to hear from you again. Yes I think I'll
have to vote for Obama in the primaries. I think with him nothing will change except maybe
they'll put some lube on the broomstick. With
the Clintons I think nothing will change at all. And then we have the nutcase repubs. They'll change things much for the worse. Maybe that's the answer. Highten the contridictions until poeple notice and raise
their voices. I'm wondering. How bad does it
have to get before the American people even find their collective voice? Or are we too divided at this point for that to happen?
Meanwhile, the war drags on....ds

Gosh. You're such a wide-eyed idealist, and therefore bound to be disappointed.

"Regardless of politics"

My favorite part. Thank you.

Too many forget that reality when Bush keeps using troops for partisan and ideological sales pitch backdrops.

John- any thoughts on whether the military brass shares your sentiments? I get the feeling ideologues have been promoted by Bush to the extant that many may need to be asked to retire... I hope I'm wrong, but it's the Bush pattern to wrest control of bureacracies top-down and fire dissenters and independant thinkers.

One would think my concerns wouldn't be necessary, but Bush clearly doesn't care what is best for the country.

Good points all.
My motive. I want CHANGE. The republicans ALL said
"less government regulation" - LESS? WE HAVE NONE NOW. The Savings and Loan mess of the late 80's, 90's - we were told government would provide oversight so this won't happen again, yet here's the "sub-prime lending" mess - SAME THING.
Lead paint on toys, poison toothpaste,...
Unchecked capitalism was the start of the industrial revolution with sweatshops, child labor, robber barons, monopolies,... are all making a comeback.
So, I am looking at democrats.
Why would I expect change from Hillary? Change back to the administration that brought us NAFTA? Back to renting the Lincoln bedroom. Our illegal immigration problem did not arise solely under Bush - it was there and ignored under the first 2 Bush terms - why give them a third?
John Kennedy was charged with being inexperienced by Nixon, but Kennedy inspired, as Obama does. My mind is made up.
