Michelle Obama: The Accidental Fashionista

What's Your Reaction:

Even though I've been blogging about Michelle Obama's style for the past four months, the extensive coverage of her wardrobe in the media never ceases to amaze me. Every journalist, blog commentator, and politician feels entitled to tell the First Lady of the free world what dress to wear when, how much it should cost, and how long the sleeves should be. They badgered her election night dress deeming it unflattering, but a dress that compliments her hard-earned biceps is inappropriate. She widely supports American fashion designers, but said designers are not African American much to the Black Artists Association's dissatisfaction. The First Lady is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. She can never win, and what I adore the most about Michelle Obama's wardrobe choices is that she is not trying to.

Yet, I have found through many discussions that there is a misunderstanding about Michelle Obama's sartorial intentions. The public fails to separate her style from her agenda as the First Lady. Somehow we have managed to become more fixated on her outfits than she seems to be. I'm only guessing, but I find it highly unlikely that Michelle Obama is aiming to be defined by or specifically remembered for her style. What I see is a positive and dynamic wife and mother who just happens to look good simultaneously.

Perhaps the media and bloggers like me are to blame for the confusion. Maybe we have misguided the public into thinking that the First Lady sought out her fashion icon status when in actuality we bestowed this label upon her. Here is a woman whose goal was to support her husband's presidential campaign. She ditches panty-hose, throws a belt around her waist and suddenly she's a fashionista. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve the attention, but what we have to understand is that there is danger in this title. A minor misstep leads to extreme disappointment and to call her critics harsh is an understatement.

The most recent example that comes to mind is the backlash against her photo on the cover of Vogue. The comments I have read and heard are far from what I expected. "Awkward", "boring", "disappointing" were the most popular reactions. One reader of my blog even went as far to comment that the First Lady did not look astute. Ouch. I asked critics to ask themselves the following questions. How comfortable would you look posing for a high fashion magazine if you were a self-proclaimed "tomboy jock at heart"? What cover girl doesn't look bemused? And why on earth would you expect glamour from Michelle Obama? True, it is Vogue, but we are also in a recession, and we don't want our First Lady to be the next Marie Antoinette.

I'm not asking that we lower our expectations of Michelle Obama rather that we ease up on the disparagement. Being named a fashion icon is an enormous responsibility, especially when it happens accidentally, and I believe that the First Lady is handling the pressure quite well. The elements of her style are immeasurable. It is sometimes whimsical, but always effortless. Like the little black dress she wore to Ted Kennedy's birthday celebration with a bold Tom Binns statement necklace. Her look is ever approachable. Whether visiting a federal department or reading to school children, a belted cardigan is chic, yet welcoming. And my favorite accessories on Michelle Obama: her sense of self and inner strength that give her the ability to wear what hell she wants.

At last, someone-you-make sense about Michelle's sartorial sassiness. Like you said, she didn't want to be fashion symbol (or victim) which it exactly what has happened vis the love ya/hate/ya media maelstrom. Like most busy, involved women she doesn't seem to spend hours reflecting overmuch on the do's and don'ts of her mirror image. So a hair's out of place or she's misbuttoned sweater or is wearing her favorite shoes again. She's got more important things to do, more places to go. Her style is in knowing herself. She's fond of sparkles and brooches and mix and match. Michelle succeeds naturally in being fresh, casual and comfortable. She defines the clothes not the other way around.

From what I have seen of her fashion selections so far, she prefers a timeless style. Therefore, she does not need to follow any new fashion trend or style because she already has “Style.” Since the core of my professional expertise is image consulting, I feel that Michelle is going to wear what she feels comfortable in-no matter what others think. She can change outfits to create different looks whether it is a designer garment or a department store brand. Not many women in her position can copy her dress code, but I am sure they would prefer to be more comfortable and still look elegant!

We must not overlook the fact that her style goes much farther than just dressing in a fashionable manner. She appears to have great style in the way she lives, interacts with others, displays her manners and behaves toward everyone around her. She portrays all the signs of confidence in herself as a person, being complete on the inside as well as on the outside, and no one should attempt any changes in her appearance or behavior that would upset the image that she already radiates.

Michelle Obama should not be watched only for what she will be wearing everytime she steps out in the public view, or what trends she will follow, make or break thereafter. Instead, she should be watched for how elegantly she handles herself, her family and her life as the First Lady of the USA.

Count me as one more person clicking on all those "what Michelle is wearing" links. Why do I care? Why do any of us care? Because she looks great! Whether we're seeing her in designer dresses or digging in the garden she looks like a genuine human being, not someone trying to figure out what she should look like. She looks like someone who gets dressed with a sense of style, but also with a sense of humor, a sense of dignity, a sense of confidence, and a sense of her own beauty, intelligence, and strength. An American woman in the best sense of the word!

"How comfortable would you look posing for a high fashion magazine if you were a self-proclaimed "tomboy jock at heart"? What cover girl doesn't look bemused? And why on earth would you expect glamour from Michelle Obama?"

The writer of this article is making this unnecessarily tough. Haven't people, celebrities, First Ladies, et. al. posed for Vogue and other magazine covers, like, for years and years and years?? Why all the drama about Michelle Obama? Don't the experts have this whole thing mastered by now?? Mrs Obama has garnered criticism because her personal fashion choices have been very odd for someone of her standing. It is not all that complicated a thing to dress smartly and stylishly.....and if she lacks the natural skill, competent guidance is available to her.

Why is this so difficult?

"True, it is Vogue, but we are also in a recession, and we don't want our First Lady to be the next Marie Antoinette. "

There's probably no danger in this happening. Michelle Obama isn't a fashionista, she dresses tastefully and with personal style but she isn't ruled by fashion. We've seen her in casual wear that isn't fashionable, and it belies that she is a practical person concerned with weightier things than how she looks.

When I think of the Jackie O comparison I think that Jackie O and Nancy Reagan very much gave fashion a lot of weight because of their vanity . That Nancy loved to spend spend spend. Barbara was so senior looking she never care about fashion; Laura same thing only younger. Hillary was so busy being a feminist that meant dressing anti-feminine and Rosalind...can't remember .

Our First Lady's energy, personality and vibrancy is what sets her apart and the clothes are just the icing on the cake.

If she would just stop getting caught making those ugly faces, she really is an attractive woman. I wouldn't say she's pretty or cute, she's attractive.

Michelle's faces are some of the many things about her that make her so endearing and interesting to watch.
