"We can't afford to be distracted," Obama bellowed in frustration recently to a standing ovation. "Every time somebody somewhere says something stupid -- that everybody gets up in arms -- and we forget about the war in Iraq and we forget about the economy."

Poor Barack Obama. The media will not let Jeremiah-gate disappear. Obama's irreverent reverend continues to get more play than Eliot Spitzer ever did (gratis too). Television news cannot step out of the mind-numbing, money-making mud of sound bite distortion, faux-ombudsman logorrhea ("keeping them honest"), and character demonization.

Obama's dignified elevation of our national discourse through honesty, depth, and nuance was greeted by ratings-esurient tabloid news, race-baiting commentary, and rancorous replay of Wright -- ad nauseam. Within moments of flying high on the road to a more perfect union, our talking heads reminded us that we are all typical white people.

How can we move beyond the partisan, racial, and generational divides of yore, as Barack Obama hopes, when our media filters all political discourse through a sieve of facile commentary laden with sensational slime? The lesson of Jeremiah-gate: without a new kind of mainstream television media, Obama will never cultivate a new kind of politics.

I take it as a given that the constitutional spirit of "freedom of the press," ensures a citizen's right to information necessary to participate in politics, to function as responsible citizens, and to hold government accountable. As with public education, our forefathers understood that a free and vibrant press nurtures a well-informed public, which can then best direct the future of American global and domestic policy.

But the spirit of the first amendment has been eroded thanks to the inane antics and crude quality of trash-television news (especially cable news). Let me be clear: this is not an issue of media bias or political influence; it is a problem of low quality and little accountability characteristic of both liberal and conservative media outlets. With few exceptions, TV news shirks its educational and civic responsibilities by offering as little informative substance as possible.

True, the Internet now offers a variety of news outlets to the public, but access to these outlets has not yet caught up to TV ownership and, even if it does, it is doubtful that most would have the time to navigate closely for reliable information. The reality is that most still depend on TV news for information.

How does TV News guarantee its continuously vapid product? The following are just 8 of its coma-inducing strategies:

1. The Blitzkrieg Effect (a.k.a. The Epilepsy-Inducing Effect). This strategy lulls our wits and dulls our critical senses through a lightning war of flashing lights, flipping screens, and flippant sounds. Grounded in the assumption that most Americans have the attention span of Ozzy Osborne, the celerity of TV News abbreviates most of what deserves our attention. The effect is that an hour with Wolf, Keith, or Dan feels like an entire afternoon in front of a Playstation. The verdict on Verdict and its carbon copies: This is not sexy news; it's stupid news.

2. Prioritize the Petty: All pedophiles, all the time; Celebrity news; Oddballs.

3. All Prophecy All The Time (a.k.a. The Getting It Wrong Most of the Time Strategy). If a drinking game could be designed around the erroneous 2008 primary predictions, we'd all need liver transplants. It didn't work for Isaiah or Ezekiel, so why would prophecy work for Andrea Mitchell or John King? Does Botox induce clairvoyance? This modus operandi of false prophecy may be embarrassing, but it isn't entirely self-defeating: the revelation of unexpected outcome provides an endless supply of non-newsworthy but oh-so-exciting news: What? We were wrong about Hillary? Again?! How do you explain it this time Chris Mathews? Well, you see we didn't entirely anticipate that Hillary is a seven headed hydra.

4. The Isolationist Doctrine and the Patriotism Principle. Flags, Flags, Flags. Avoid foreign news when possible rather than go through the trouble of illuminating the relevancy of world events for the lives of Americans.

5. Groupthink über alles. This strategy demands that journalists only turn to other journalists or campaign spinsters (who are often former journalists) for commentary and analysis -- no matter how little expertise they have on a matter. Apparently, journalists don't make many non-journalist friends. Endogamy is all the rage (traces of journalism's Jewish origins perhaps?) with pundits only talking to pundits who are interviewing pundits. Of course, this is totally logical; after all, when a plumber needs to repair a car or get the cable running, doesn't he call other plumbers to do the job? This strategy also does wonders to help chip away at the American cultural aversion to academic scholarship, intellectualism, and thought.

6. The Tim Russert Effect (a.k.a. The "Gotcha" Effect or The I Embarrassed You On National Television Effect or The How Does That Foot In Your Mouth Taste Now Effect). Mr. Meet The Press and his clones confront politicians with allegedly contradictory statements, without offering adequate opportunity to elucidate the contextual circumstances within which those seemingly opposing statements were made. As Matthew Yglesias recently described so well, this strategy fails to inform the viewer of anything useful aside from a politician's ability to withstand unfair grilling. The Russert Effect is part of a larger ongoing inquisition to unearth what the media considers the greatest of all political sins: hypocrisy. While the architects of a botched preemptive war remain at peace, the Spitzers of the world must fall.

7. The Nirvana Principle or Keep it safe: Do not ask guests difficult questions (unless it's the Tim Russert Effect above). Rarely investigate the meaning of words like "unpatriotic," "un-American," and "liberal." Never question assumptions.

8. The Racehorse Strategy (a.k.a. Substance is for Sissies). Rather than pay attention to issues or substantive policy questions, this strategy insists on attention to campaign tactics, poll numbers, and who is leading and where, as if the presidential campaign was the Indy 500. No wonder some of the best cable news commentary comes from the former leading anchor on ESPN.

The inanity of our TV news affects the strength of our democracy, our national security, and our ability to function productively in a globalized world. The quality of TV news is a political issue that needs to be addressed by government through intervention and policy.

Fault lies beyond the feet of any individual production team or news organization. All news media organizations share the same primary goal to attract and hold large audiences for advertisers; being profit-driven, media-defenders argue, the media responds to consumer demands for entertainment and for news that conspicuously bears directly on their lives.

But even if the content of our news is driven by perceived consumer demand, we are not obviated (if we want to preserve a healthy democracy) from ensuring that more Americans remain well-versed in the foreign and domestic issues of the day. Given the wide grassroots appeal of the Obama campaign, which pivots upon the promise of "a new kind of politics," I don't think it too presumptuous to assert that many Americans are hungry for a higher form of political discourse (even if they do find TV news entertaining as well).

To raise the level of our political discourse, our political leadership must begin discussing the best ways -- at the level of policy -- in which we can reach this goal. In addition, alternative public spaces or institutions should be created in which information can be transferred and public awareness fostered.

As long as the majority of our news outlets remain profit-driven, we can only expect the most insipid of productions.

Yeah. Isn't the press great? They give each candidate their turn for smears. They smear one for awhile and when they public gets their fill, they smear the other one. Back and forth. Meanwhile, real life goes on like our domestic issues and the war escalation. Bush can do most anything he wants now because no one is paying attention.

It's time we stop Umbrelling Americans. we Need to expand our Vocabulary. Be more Precise about our Wordage and reckless inclusion under on Facade.
Start with the Republicans- as th eclearest example- Some are Fiscal Conservative, Soem are social Conservatives, Some our Corp greed mongers andsome are Meglomaniacs. Same Divsion should occur when discussing the 'Dem' Party - we have as many infiltrators as the Repubs have had to contend with- their Doctrines so Mypoic that could not get exposure except theri these National Platfroms.
Another is the Fallacy of th ePro Life movement- thsoe who actually value Life and those who only value Birth
The Womans Movement - Those how what Retribution and those who want to be able to stand and compete on a level playing field. Reverse Sexism is not a doctrine of Woamn's Libbers- It of the 'FemiNazi's" who have seized our platform and derailed Our Goals. I do not want to be given Special Consideration - I just want the opportunity to be Considered like my male counter part.
I'm actaually Enjoying this 'break Up' of the various Factions- let those who's intentions are Corrupt stand by them selves- and what their Real intentions Are.
both Sexism and Racism have the another side to their coin- Reversing the situtation is Still the Same 'Ism'
The media would be well advised to start seeing things in their True shades-the Free Loaders need to get with the Program- Or We will Leave- F*ck 'em.

Did author worry this much about Hillary Clinton who could not say "boo" without being criticized by the media for well over a year BEFORE A WORD WAS EVER SAID ABOUT OBAMA??? WHY do you think Obama got as far as he did in this race? The media treated him with kid gloves! If this Jeremiah Wright story, as well as Tony Rezko and Bill Ayers stories had all come out at the beginning, Hillary Clinton would have clinched this nomination by Super Tuesday!

Poor Obama!!!! Yeah, my ass!!!

SEVERAL sermons created into 1 sound bite is distorted information, 4feetland deal does not stop troops from being killed.
I am not for Mr. Obama because of his race. I am not against Hillary because she is white (typical or not)and woman. I am voting for Obama because he given our young Americans hope for the future of this nation. Young people in poorer neighborhood are now hearing sometime for the first time in their lives they can be just as important as anyone else, because they matter. I like Caroline Kenndy, one president her dad said positives message to a nation. Obama is the second one. Young americans want to be involved, they are interested in their own lives to believe it possible.

On Hilliary front, young females are not getting any positive benefits from here campaign, Poorly plan and implemented. That does not tell me she is ready on day one. It also tell me she took for granted Hispanic and black people's voters. Her daughter has also lied for her mother. I don't have kids, never did yet, I care more about the values of the young in America than Hillary does.

Carville said Judas, One Hispanic or all? It is all uneducated whites and Hilliary 20 years in that church. How many Hispanic associate with Governor Bill Richardson for years to include his family. Are they guilty by association, Does his family feel proud or shame being called Judas?.

you mean after the labeled her the inevitable candidate . the problem is she bought the hype and didn't prepare to work for the win. then she forgot that the media works then like a double edged sword and cuts both ways. then she forgot that the danger of digging ditches is that you can fall in too. she thought the media would vet obama and not her.

OK, I just saw the clip In which Wright makes a connection between the Israeli Palestinian Conflict and 9/11. Thats what he says, THE ISRAELI PALESTINIAN CONFLICT and 9/11.

If you have a problem with the view that the Israeli Palestinian conflict helped fuel the fires of terrorist recruitment and funding that led to 9/11, then you must first take it up with: 1)the IRAQ STUDY GROUP, who stated in their report that there will never be an end to the war on terror or the situation in Iraq until the Israeli Palestinian conflict is solved. 2) Tony Blair, who said to the US Congress after 9/11 that there will NEVER be an end to the war on terror until the Isaeli palestinian conflict is solved. 3) Bill Clinton, who, after 9/11, during a charlie Rose interview, refered to the Israeli Palestinian conflict as the "philosphical underpinning of Middle eastern terrorist recruitment" 4) the 9/11 commission, members of whom have made this connection as well. 5) MANY MANY OTHER VERY CREDIBLE SOURCES.

So please, CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY WRIGHT WOULD BE WRONG IN ANY WAY TO SUGGEST THIS??????? ANYONE? (crickets)

Mr Halper is trying to sell short on Barack Hussein Obama & his Barackship's charisma. BHO's message is getting through to voters despite the MSM's efforts to sell Weapons of Mass Distraction as news. The coverage of Spitzer's fall & calls for HRC to pull out of the race take up time & space but the don't get an audience among voters. BHO's words do get an audience. The MSM's Weapons of Mass Distraction can be compared to mental masturbation among the chattering classes & the MSM. They are a bore, both the chattering classes & what the MSM tries to pass off as news & commentary. The MSM's side shows remain empty on the midway of the circus of the campaign. The shills & barkers are as boring as the sideshows. The crowd is already in the big top with its eyes on the center ring. The big show has started.

Gee, Shaun, you must've been hard at work on your PhD studies not to have noticed before now that there is a problem with our media. Or, maybe you were OK with it when it seemed to be slavish in its positive coverage of Sen. Obama. Whichever is the case, welcome to the party. Now that you're here, and you've noticed the tactics used by what currently passes for media, have you also thought about what we could do to change this media? Say, I know, how about reinstituting those pesky regulations that prevented consolidation? Maybe that would take the corporations out of the picture so that the media could stop being the outlet to keep us distracted from anything serious while their agenda continues to roll merrily along. Or, maybe we could institute some kind of regulation regarding the definition of the term "news" so that no one would mistake the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly or yes, even some of the AirAmerica hosts as such. Ahhh, not much likelihood in any big changes as all the candidates that the corporatist media has created for us pretty much are beholden to the interests that want to maintain the status quo.

I truly used to believe that the MSM would NEVER NOT report "facts". Why did it take me so long to realize that all they currently report is propaganda, supposition, inuendo, personal bias or opinion,or mis-statements (lies)? Why didn't I listen to my husband? Well, I am now! No, not just because of Shaun's report above, but because when the only thing I saw (24/7 loops of Rev. Wright), I finally realized that my husband was "right". That was when it hit me that 24/7 loops of Rev. Wright could NOT POSSIBLY BE THE ONLY IMPORTANT ISSUE OF EACH DAY FOR TWO PLUS WEEKS, I knew that I had been suckered in and duped by a very effective machine. I vowed that, NEVER AGAIN, would we pay another dime in the salaries of the MSM. NONE of those so- called "news" stations will be allowed in our household again until they can get back to reporting "THE FACTS AND NOTHING BUT THE FACTS. If we can't find information we need or want in the newspapers (where sources are at least questioned, if not always given and links provided to backup statements), where we can decide with our own brains if the information makes sense, then we can live without that information altogether. There are certainly better "ENTERTAINMENT" shows on the other channels and these will suffice until reporters do their jobs as defined iunder journalism in Websters dictionary.

Do Americans know that CNN runs a tacky set of "news" in short soundbites in the US for the US audience and for the rest of the world it provides a far superior broadcast with news from US and the rest of the world. They actually dummy down the news for the American audience and they also make sure that you do not see what is happening in the rest of the world.

9. Investigative/Sh-mestigative (a.k.a. Sponsor/lobby/patron envy). Never take on controversial topics which would uncover malfeasance on the part of those that are providing sponsorship/advertising dollars. Especially if it means hard-hitting, deep-diving, fact-based journalism.

I agree with you ddot, however, Michelle's comments were, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I"m really proud of my country not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change," she said. "I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment."

(ultimately, we will share the same fate, be it a better future of mutual respect and brotherhood or a spriral back to the ignorance and fear of the past. The choice is ours.) Sorry, this part doesn't belong with this message.

Really: Extremely , exceptionally. Example): I am proud of my child, however, last year she went to an Aids Clinic, and selflessly spent the summer working as a volunteer. I was afraid she was beginning to show early signs of selfishness. For the first time, since she's been a young adult I am extremely proud of her selfless behavior towards others.

More Evidence that we are beyond the Jeremiah issue with the media giving Obama a complete pass on the Mr. Wright.

Democrat Barack Obama seemed to suggest in an interview aired Friday that his former pastor has acknowledged that his controversial remarks were inappropriate and hurtful, although there are no public accounts of the minister having done so.
"Had the reverend not retired and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying there at the church," Obama said.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the senator's remarks did not imply that Wright has expressed misgivings about his statements. - Associated Press

I guess the media just missed that key point today, but wait, they are more important matters to focus on like Hillary's lies.

Obama and his relationship with Rev. Wright.

Either Wright has alot of INFLUENCE over Obama because Obama went through a "religious conversion" to Jesus which is described to be life altering. It changes the person, physically, mentally and obviously spiritually.

Or as many Obama supporters claim that Obama isn't influenced by Wright which is odd because that would mean Obama is merely PANDERING to religious people by mentioning that Rev. Wright helped him find Jesus.

I wish the media would do their jobs. We need more anaylsis on Obama and a little less focus on Hillary.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:25 PM on 03/28/2008

As a Clinton supporter, you are right, we do need to have a lot less focus on her. The more we know, the the more she scares the hell out of us!

If Wright is the best you can do, we are in good shape. The rest of us have viewed the whole tape, and the polls show we don't care.

Or ... maybe more focus on Hillary's supposed qualifications, what she means by a threshold, where her tax returns are, whether it was her camp that influenced a Nafta story regarding the Canadians, et cetera ... and less on empty mud associations like the Wright 'story'.

Moderator's Pick

HuffPost's Pick

Real democracy based on an informed electorate and bipartisanship is impossible without some kind of Fairness Doctrine for talk radio.

Talk radio has been the difference, even with other media consolidation. Since Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine the Roves of the GOP have been framing with a nail gun while progressives have been using a rock.

One of the biggest political blunders ever, considering the time lost dealing with global warming and this Bush disaster, has been progressives ignoring the republican talk radio monopoly. Most political and media analysis is done while discounting or even ignoring the its effect. Most media analysts read and watch. There are no talk radio transcripts to search to analyze to demonstrate the power of that coordinated uncontested repetition that reaches 50-70MIL Americans 24/5/365 and is used by the Roves and Norquists like an invisible hammer .

The GOP has had near complete free rein to frame and control the debate and the limits of the debate, to threaten and intimidate politicians without having to face those they threaten, to censor and to swiftboat anything and anyone progressive. The loudmouths lay out a smorgasbord of prechewed and tested one liners and talking points for the lazy celebrity media to pick from and most analysts only see the final result.

I hope the recently published Glenn Greenwald book documenting GOP success built on Dem character assassination and GOP hypocrisy will point out the GOPs most effective tool in that.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 PM on 03/28/2008

I am a liberal democrat and for the first time I have to admit that even the progressive talk radio (with a few exceptions like Sam Seder) is just as guilty as conservative talk radio.

It's getting bad on both sides. It's not just about fairness, it's about accuracy. Talk show hosts get away with saying anything, twisting facts and building consensus on facts by simply saying.....well I am not a journalist, I'm a talk show host.

That's a bunch of bs. If you have a talk show on politics even if you consider yourself a comedian/nne, you have undeniable influence and are responsible to act on facts, not on your interpretation of the facts. PERIOD.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:59 PM on 03/28/2008

there is no comparison except that they are humans talking into a microphone. the right wing talk radio monopoly is a well coordinated propaganda machine whose talkers regularly repeat the same lies and framing as everyone else on their team and dominates 90% plus of the stations and an even larger % of the coverage. and their take is the same as that coming out of the white house.

the progressives have to do their own homework as opposed to just sifting through a pile of faxes from the same network of organizations. when the progressives get their facts wrong there are very few of them you can't call about it to challenge them. and that is why the right wingers CAN"T take calls that aren't heavily screened, if they take calls at all.

you just can't honestly equate the two like that.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:41 AM on 03/29/2008

Why is it that the democratic party, the liberal think tanks, fail to grasp the importance of message, propaganda, the national mind control by repetitive chosen , widely distributed vocabulary. If they refuse to study Hitler's propaganda tactics, can they not study the Republican methodology? The masterful use of the word conservative by the republican party has Americans all across the ideological divide convinced they are conservatives and proud of it. When will the democrats start to clarify the true conservative , and redefine liberal or popularize progressive, as humane ?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 PM on 03/28/2008

maybe because much of it has been done at the talk radio level, where many progressives would rather fish around under the seat for that scratched barry manilow CD than listen to Limbaugh. it's perfect- those it attacks the most have no clue it exists until it's on TV or in th eWhite House and then they blame the wrong medium. Limbaugh got a 1/3$BIL contract plus perks for something. there's a reason going from TV to radio is a promotion these days.

the gop and it's think tanks coordinated by high paid guys like rove and in control of the only real propaganda monolith, talk radio, are too much for the disorganized, even if they have truth on their side. the RW talk radio loudmouths are proven wrong about everything of importance but they stay on the air, filling the air in every state, with little real talk back/contest because they have professional screeners who seldom allow dissent. if the monopoly wasn't aggressively protecting itself subsidizing these loudmouths Air America and independents like Mike Malloy and Ed Schulz could cancel out much of the crap. and the odious unseen effect they filter up to the rest of the media.
