9 Reasons the Cain Campaign is Done

Posted: 10/21/11 02:55 PM ET

It has been an intense primary season, with a number of candidates rising to the top of media discussion (and sometimes various national polls) only to fade just as quickly. Here are nine reasons why Herman Cain's campaign may also burn out under the glare of the national spotlight:

1. Herman Cain Wants to Raise Your Taxes: At least, that's how his opponents are spinning his now infamous 9-9-9 plan. With a Tax Policy Center study stating that 84% of U.S. households will experience a tax increase under the plan it will not be a difficult case to make. In this economy a potential raising of taxes alone could be enough to sink a candidate.

2. Cain Cannot Win the War Without an Army: The Cain campaign has acknowledged that they did not expect to get this far in the race. That's fair, but now they need to staff up ... quickly. Currently there are only three or four staff members in New Hampshire, about a half dozen in Iowa and one known person in Florida. If he had a year this would not be a problem. Since we are less than three months away from pulling the proverbial lever in the early states he could be done before he even gets started.

3. Cain Cannot Position Himself as a Job Creator: Despite the best efforts by some campaigns and media outlets to take the conversation elsewhere, the economy and jobs are still by far the top priority for most Americans. While Cain's recent statement, "If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself," may play well to some of his Tea Party supporters, it will not play well to the Main Street majority. Plus his much-touted Godfather's Pizza experience resulted in the closing of nearly two hundred stores and the loss of hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs. Michele Bachmann is right when she points out that the 9-9-9 plan is a tax plan, not an economic recovery plan.

4. Cain is a Friend of the Fed: Though the Occupy movement is being positioned by some as little more than a liberal mob, the indisputable truth is that the national dialogue has shifted where big money is concerned. For many, Wall Street and the Fed may as well be the same unpopular beast. Cain recently threw out the barb to Mitt Romney that at least he is "more Main Street than Wall Street." However, his former role as Chairman of the Board for the Kansas City Federal Reserve is going to make that bumper sticker slogan tough to stick.

5. The Cain Train Was Initially a Giant Bookmobile: Far be it from anyone to blame a guy for taking the opportunity to brand himself while he is on the national stage. However, at what point do Cain's actions start to indicate that he initially ran for president just to hock his book? He signed his book contract less than a month after filing his paperwork to run, for about a month he had more book signing events than campaign events and it was recently revealed that he spent campaign cash on copies of this memoir. Is it technically unethical? Maybe not, but the Americans that donated their hard-earned money to his campaign were not under the impression that the end goal was to crack the best seller list.

6. Cain is Not Coming Across as "In It to Win It": Cain's campaign calendar is, to be charitable, confusing. Yes, every state is important and, yes, every vote counts and yes (insert additional patriotic platitudes here). But the reality is that the eventual nominee for president will need to do well in at least one or two of the early states. Where will Cain be over the next couple of weeks? Cain will attend a beefsteak dinner in Indianapolis, spend an afternoon in Chicago and then proceed on to my birthplace, the small town of La Marque, Texas (go Coogs!). Nothing against the citizens of these fine places, but the calendar on his website seems to be missing New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, South Carolina and Florida. This is the type of thing that makes it seem, frankly, like he's not even trying.

7. At Some Point Cain's Race Will Enter the Race: Like most people, I cringe when the political conversation turns to race because, let's face it, the media does a great job of botching that type of coverage. However, the prospect of having two African-American candidates for Commander in Chief ensures that the racial narrative will come up sooner or later. The problem is that Cain has not yet crafted a winning strategy for navigating this particular issue. He recently took a shot at it, stating that President Obama, "has never been a part of the black experience of America." That remark landed as flat as his support among African-American voters -- at last count down nine to one to Obama. To be fair, Cain does not yet have wide-spread name recognition, but calling prospective voters "brainwashed" is probably not a way to win over their hearts and minds.

8. Cain May Have a Koch Problem: As Cain becomes more widely-known, so do his ties to those billionaire rascals, the Koch brothers. According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

Cain's campaign manager and a number of aides have worked for Americans for Prosperity, or AFP, the advocacy group founded with support from billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch...And Cain credits a Cleveland businessman, Rich Lowrie, who served on an AFP advisory board with helping devise his "9-9-9" plan...

Two years ago this connection may have been an asset, but the Koch brothers have been credited with launching some of the more extremist elements of the current political climate. If Cain is viewed as a Koch brothers candidate then he will likely lose the support of many moderates.

9. Cain Backed the Bailout: At its core, this may be the largest of Cain's problems. As he has stated publicly many times, Cain's support for TARP is "an issue." He has since clarified his stance by saying it was poorly executed and that certain people that do not like TARP are "economically uninformed." By that logic, the entire Tea Party is "economically uninformed." Cain is absolutely counting on feverish Tea Party support to convert momentum into votes. They may not be Romney fans, but it will be difficult if not impossible to convince a group to overlook their entire original reason for being and get enough people on the Cain Train for it to go anywhere.

Cain's already rolled back his 9-9-9 plan to 9-0-9 when people realized that they'd be paying higher taxes. I wonder how many other changes he'll have to make in order to keep his momentum.
At some point, making changes has an inverse effect on popularity as a candidate and he'll likely be seen for what he is: yet another flip-flopping liar who's just trolling for votes.

9 Reasons Cain's Campaign was Never Real

/10th reason: He got all the GOP hype but none of the donations.
12:57 AM on 10/22/2011
It must be rough for the Republican supporters. All these people that you pin your hopes and dreams on and donate tour cash to are only in it to sell books, get a show on Fox, push a reality show or have a career on the speaking circuit. Fooled every time.

I think you are correct regarding most of the Candidates, and certainly correct regarding cain, but I don't think you can say the same for Paul. He is in this to win, and has even given up his seat in the House to dedicate all of his time to this Presidential run. He is showing strong numbers in all of the early primary states, and I don't think you will see him quitting the campaign trail for weeks at a time to sell his books.

*LOL*

All 9 are good points. I don't think he's going to be the nominee.

All these flash-in-the-pan candidates are doing is diverting scrutiny from the eventual nominee: Romney

This allows Romney to avoid saying things to win over the Tea Party types in the primary. Things he'd have to unsay in the general election.

The only one who's drawing Romney out is Perry.

Having Mr. Cain as a presidential candidate is a nice pipe dream but mainstream conservative America is not going to turn out en masse and stand in line to vote for a black candidate. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
09:02 PM on 10/21/2011
What I believe is going to happen is that they are saturating the American public with massive overexposure. The convention is a long way down the road and these clowns are having a debate every couple of weeks. This is unprecedented. Their conservative fans may enjoy it and think it useful but the voters in the middle who are the biggest voting block are going to grow sick of these guys and their rhetoric long before the nomination. I sure hope they keep it up too. Just makes Obama's job that much easier.

Right on the money. I've been wondering why they are peppering us with their version of reality TV shows. It's "bring in the clowns" every two weeks. I'm pretty sick of their re-runs.

We will see. The one thing I am certain of is they the criticism of the 999 plan by this so-called tax policy center is bogus. The analysis they did included the corporate part of Cains as part of the personal tax and yet they did not include current corporate taxes personal taxes. The simple fact is that the absolute maximum effective rate you as an individual will can pay under the 999 plan is 17.2% of earning. This includes the Cain Sales tax and the Cain payroll tax. This upper limit assumes that the payer has no debt and interest payments, so state and local taxes, no savings for a rainy day, no 401K pension contributions, and no health insurance payments. The upper limit applies only if the payer spends every dime of their income on services and unused consumer goods. If , after all deductions and loopholes, you currently pay more than 17.2% of total income in federal taxes then you stand to gain under the 999 plan.

This time in 2007 Obama was in third place. It is too early for predictions. One thing is certain. Obama is toast.
04:38 AM on 10/22/2011
This time in 2011 Ron Paul is in third place. I predict he wins, and I predict Cain crashes faster and burns just as hard as Perry. It really is more impressive though when you consider that Cain is pulling in 1/8th of the money Perry is. Perry should be able to burn longer at least.

I think it kind of doesn't matter who gets the Repub nom. The election numbers will be the same. Right now the mantra seems to be "anyone but Mitt". That is why virtually all the non-Romney votes are for "someone else". When Romney does get the nomination, all of those "anyone but Romney" voters will quickly move to "anyone but Obama". That is why Obama will win in2012. There aren't that many "anyone but Obama" voters outside of the very right wing of the republican party. There are certainly no Blacks or Latinos in that category, and very few Dems, and fewer Liberals. The Repub nominee will win the white male population, as McCain did in 2008, and Obama will be the choice for virtually every other demographic.

50% of likely voters won't vote for Obama. The nominee of the republicans will have time to put his or her program to the voters. They have had a belly full of the Obama plan.

They can never take my panache

Right, because the public lovingly embraced the 9-9-9 plan once they learned what it was.

Republicans don't dare put their program in front of the voters. Paul Ryan's plan to turn Medicare into a voucher system became political poison. And even a majority of Republican voters don't want the taxes of millionaires cut again. The Republicans' only hope is to continue to lie about what Obama is doing (he has raised your taxes, his stimulus programs didn't create any jobs, he "nationalized" the health care system).

Unfortunately for the country, since the corporate-controlled media never calls out the Republicans for their lies, the strategy might work.
09:50 PM on 10/21/2011
It seems to me that the "nominee of the republicans" is who you are voting for, no matter which of these fools is chosen. I think that was part of my point. But nobody wins elections by not being the other guy. What plan do you see coming from the Repub nominee. Cain? His 9-9-9 plan is all ready a flop. Perry? His flat tax is not going to fly, simply because any flat tax proposal (or broadening of the base) will guarantee that taxes will go up for a majority of Americans. Romney? I'm guessing you don't want him as your nominee, so what do you think the rest of us feel about him? Really, who do you see in that line up that will have a plan that most of America could stomach. Your belly may be full, but mine is a little sickened by what I see in these Repub debates, both on stage, and in the audiences. I think most of America is turned off by people booing soldiers, cheering executions, and letting the uninsured die.

Chai Tea Party...redistributing spices & flavors
04:50 PM on 10/21/2011
I am glad you addresses his support for TARP.....he said in the most recent debate that he did not blame Wall Street for Wall Street failing which makes no sense. The Tea Party hated TARP...but it makes me wonder if it had been done differently would they be ok with it or did they realize that their investments would have been SOL without the bailout.

He also wants us to be convinced that he is more "Main Street" than Romney while clearly supporting Wall Street over Main Street.

His ties to the Koch brothers is interesting too. I read a rant/op-ed by Ann Coulter suggesting the Murdoch and Koch were awesome b/c they made money by making stuff and the bailout only helped Dems.

So he backs the Koch bros who supposedly did not support the bailout based on what I could pull from that "article" (except their protege Paul Ryan supported it) yet their friend Cain supports Wall Street.....the more I learn the more I am lost.

Cognative Dissonance - the ability to hold two (or more) contradicting ideas in one's head.

At some point - the Teaparty guys will wake up to some of these facts about Mr. Cain. And they will either chose to ignore one of the contradictions,... or thier collective heads will explode.

So if I can't find a job, according to Cain, it's my own fault. But if a Wall Street bank fails, he doesn't blame the Wall St. bank?

And they wonder why the #Occupy protests are full of people angry because failure keeps getting rewarded, as long as it's rich people who are failing.
