Joel Ward and the Hypocrisy of Racism in Sports

Posted: 04/27/2012 5:17 pm

In 1958, winger Willie O'Ree became the first African American athlete to play in the NHL. Which team was responsible for breaking the color barrier? The Boston Bruins.

The second and third black players in the NHL were Mike Marson and Bill Riley, both signed by the Washington Capitals.

More than half a century since O'Ree's NHL debut, this week's April 25 game between the Caps and Bruins has thrust racial issues into the spotlight again. After Washington's Joel Ward clinched the winning goal against Boston, dozens of angry Tweets started appearing, using vile, derogatory, racist slurs -- some also threatening violence.

I'm an African-American. I'm also an owner of the Caps. I was born during the era of segregation. And I'm sickened and discouraged to be reminded such ignorance and hatred persists. It's been almost 50 Years since the March on Washington. It's 2012, people! Have we learned nothing? Even one racially offensive Tweet is too many. There is no place for this in hockey, or anywhere.

I couldn't be prouder of Joel Ward himself, who has shrugged off the online attacks; he said in an interview with USA Today, "There have been a lot of Boston fans who have supported me, which is very cool to see. No hard feelings from me. This is a game."

But if we want this game to be the best that it can be, then we need to make sure the game belongs to everyone; and that every child who loves to pick up a stick and get on the ice knows that he or she is welcome in the sport. On this issue, we should all be on the same team.

And beyond the rink, let's each do our part to fight racism and intolerance wherever it appears--to fight bad speech with good speech, to challenge prejudice with knowledge, and to stand up for what is right.

What about Tony McKegney, he played the Buffalo Sabers and about 5 other teams in the 80's. In the early 80's Val James, a black man, played for the Leafs in one game. He got into a fight with Jim Playfair, the Flames, on his first shift and got a game misconduct and never appeared in another game for the Leafs. Mike Gear, Edmonton Oilers, in the early 90's. There have been plenty more than the two first mentioned.

The entire concept of race is ignorant.

Yet it defines the very thing that this nation has spent more energy attempting to corral than any other thing.

There is no shortage of idiots in the Tweeting public. Why should sports be immune?

Of course, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of American's watch sports each week, why should the ramblings of just two idiots command any attention?

Ms. Johnson,

If you are going to make these claims, you ma'am have some accounting to do yourself. Why did you hire Dale Hunter as an executive/coach/front personality of your hockey team? Mr. Hunter is one of the three worst on-ice 'goons' in the history of the National Hockey League. He has openly assaulted, attempted to physically cripple, many players and ignored league officials with repeated offenses. However, Dale Hunter is now the public face of your team. Also, why don't you mention how a productive black player such as Wayne Simmons is of the most popular fan favorite on the Philadelphia Flyers, in a city that some black athletes have publicly ridiculed as racist (Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson)? Also, this column is lacking analysis of the clear racist and anti-Semitism by a Detroit star baseball player Delmon Young. The Delmon Young story is much more larger and much more serious story last week of a professional using his brawn mixed with ethnic and racial hatred. All of this makes your critique of a very minor incident frankly insincere. Ms. Johnson you should cease having rabbit ears for anything individual that can be construed as 'racist' and focus on the history of your of a team you likely don't want stewardship of , and how it can become more accessible to inner city fans and potential participants.

Ease up, those few tweets were racist. Also, Dale Hunter has nothing to do with this fact. Yes he did some dirty things as a player, but what does that have to do with fans posting racist tweets? What does Wayne Simmonds and Philly have to do with this? I don't like people making a big deal about small things, especially when it comes to race, but she said nothing wrong.
12:54 PM on 04/30/2012
So she's wrong because there are other racist incidents out there that she didn't mention? Talk about narrow minded.

Well... We can confirm sports. And girls... And presidents... And music... But let's not go with "everything." There is nothing showing that Blacks excel at playing cards.

Congrat Joel Ward. A game you should never forget, You make us proud to see when we get out on the ice or the field or court we have always struggle to be number one. Gongrat!

Willie O'Ree (and Joel Ward) is an African-Canadian, not an African-American. Sheila, do some basic research.

North America is a continent. African-American by default therefore includes African-US and African-Canadian. But this changes the message of the article how?

@ Utari. And where in the article did she say he was African American Utari.
10:30 AM on 04/30/2012
I'm not Utari but she says it in the first line of her post: "In 1958, winger Willie O'Ree became the first African American athlete to play in the NHL".

Neenmi,

"African-American" is not a reference North America otherwise it would be "African-North American." The problem with that term is people use it interchangeably with "black" which is incorrect. Pointing out an inaccuracy does not have to change the message and just because it does not change her message does not mean it should not be pointed out. What's an "African-American" anyway? Why should a Canadian be referred to as one when people recognize his country as Canada?

Her title should at least be narrowed to hockey and not all sports.

Why is anyone surprised at certain people calling this hockey player the "N" word. That's just what they do. It's the only way they can feel hood about themselves. They are like school yard bullies, their self-worth is determined by insulting and hurting others.

Racially insensitive comments have no place in today's world. People need to stand against those people that are racist, sexist and homophoebic.

Do the right thing and treat each other with respect and dignity.

How do you keep a fish dry in the ocean? Can't happen! Telling these people to abhor racism is telling them to stop breathing. We will continue to fight it but have no illusion that we will be able to end it. It's like the air we breath. Sometimes its clean air; sometimes is polluted air. Racism is like polluted air; while you will not notice it all the time even though it's there; the pungent smell rises once in a while to remind you that it is there.

"you will not notice it all the time even though it's there"? That totally depends on if you are giving or receiving. If you are the later you can smell, hear, taste, and feel it from miles away. Sometimes it is not done on purpose. It is a matter of societal conditioning.

Racist individuals and even groups are everywhere.
Racist policy, now thats a conservative thing. Voter ID. Arizona Immigration policy. Anti-antidiscrimination laws.
You get the point.

Folks, I named specific legislation, introduced and championed by conservatives that negatively affect specific minority groups within our population. You got anything to refute that, I'm all ears, if not, own it.

A few dozen people saying something on twitter is absolutely meaningless. Why make an issue out of it at all?

If it was a few dozen Black people doing something, would you say the same?!
Most likely..as with the first Black president, there's thousands thinking the same thing.
Where's the White fans' denouncing of such comments?!

It's really sad how people hold on to social constructs of race, when even casually skimming a genetics book undoes the imaginary "race" concept. You can call me a philosopher/youthful dreamer, but tell me something...ppl in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria have blonde hair and blue eyes, are they white? Persian ppl from Iran consider themselves white. Indigenous N. Africans have light skin and straighter hair, are they not African? Are ppl so stupid that they can't see that these terms are arbitrary and carry no inherent meaning? Black means something different in S. Africa, Brasil, and the US. As I demonstrated, white means something different as well. WAKE UP! There is only 1 human race. You can call my view purely philosophical, except even science backs it up. Let's end this sad situation in the States and realize that WE perpetrate racism. When toddlers play in the sand box, they play together. They know nothing about "race." It's taught to them, by people like us. We must take responsibility for that.

Boston is as racially a divided city as ANY big city in America.

So, since Boston has been knocked out of the playoffs by this brothers goal, to that I'd say right on bro!

It takes a brother to knock out a team and a bigoted city with one blow. That's what I call a 2-fer!
