Can You Imagine If Bill Clinton .....

This is going to sound a little like an Andy Rooney, but I am getting a little tired of hearing how the current Bush scandals would be handled if Bill Clinton had done them? I may have been guilty of having the same thoughts. However, references to Clinton's scandals and comparative justice regarding scandals or crimes are never a good argument. It would be like asking a jury in a criminal trial to excuse the charged crime because others got away with it or got a lighter sentence. That is a lame argument that never works in the justice system. Furthermore, it empowers Republicans in a way that is not intended.

The last thing we want to do is remind everyone about the Clinton years and the Monica scandal. It is an uncomfortable subject that all of us have to dance around because it was an embarrassment to the Clintons and the progressive movement. The Bush scandals and incompetence are unique in the history of the American Presidency and accordingly the comparisons to any other scandals have a tendency to dilute the significance of the Bush wrongdoings.

The countdown to the end of the Bush Administration is a time of great opportunity for the Democratic Party and the Progressive movement. Let's keep the focus on the present and the future to maximize "the gift that keeps giving."
