The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had a liver transplant during his medical leave. The article notes that Job received the transplant in April, 4 months after he left Apple, and has taken the last two months to recover. Apple insists that Jobs will return to the company at the end of the month.
As part of a new background check procedure, the city of Bozeman, Montana is requiring all city job applicants to provide login details for social networks. New applicants are required to give authority's their login names and passwords to sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. The move comes as a counter to the US government's suggestions on how to stay safe online, which includes never giving your login and password information to anyone.
Google unveiled a new news section this week where users can visually search news sites. Dubbed "Google Flipper", the new site gives users the ability to scan news sites by sources, keywords, and recommendations, while also organizing stories into appropriate sections. Google Flipper is expected to launch later in the summer.
NY Times reporter David Rohde, who was abducted in Afghanistan in November, escaped captivity this weekend. Rohde's climbed over the wall of a compound in North Wazirstan, Pakistan, where he was being held hostage with Afghan reported Tahir Lindin. The two were led to a military base and subsequently flown to a US base in Afghanistan.
Disney's The Proposal grossed an estimated $34.1 million this weekend to take the box office. The Ryan Reynolds-Sandra Bullock romantic comedy topped recent winner's The Hangover and Up. While The Proposal did well in the States, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took the international box office, despite only opening in Japan and the UK.
