Why Is Apple Selling a Non-Contract iPhone?

Posted: 03/23/10 03:34 AM ET

Today's most interesting stories in technology, media and entertainment:

In a move that no one can explain, Apple is now selling iPhones for list price without an AT&T contract. However, the iPhone will still only work on the AT&T network, so is there really a point? Well, no actually, there isn't.

In other Apple news, need a last minute gift? No problem. Now iPhone users can gift applications to each other through the App Store. Wow, now there's an app for giving apps.

Interested in the triple play deal for video, voice and data, but, you don't want a landline phone? AT&T is now letting customers choose between a wireless phone and a landline phone for their triple play. Just pick the plan that's best for you. Video, landline and data or Video, wireless and data.

Possibly a stupid question from someone considering an iphone.

In the typical transaction, AT&T will sell you the iphone at a discount, plus provide a plan for phone service. Your monthly bill is for phone service and to pay the balance on the phone.

If you buy an iphone for full price from Apple, then go to AT&T for service, will AT&T charge less per month because you didn't need to buy the iphone from them and owe the balance?

And if not, then why not?

Here's an explanation: so people with iffy credit or are visiting foreigners can get prepaid "burner" iPhones. I once worked in a Verizon store and one day a Canadian businessman came in looking for a burner because his foreign citizenship somehow precluded him from getting a phone on contract.

It's easy to explain. Apple did the same thing in March one year ago..to reduce stock in preparation for the launch of the next generation of iPhones. So watch for the next gen iPhones to debut in a few months.
