10 Weird Festivals For A Wacky Summer (PHOTOS)

Posted: 05/05/2012 7:00 am

Summer is a time for state fairs and carnivals. Not every town, however, is satisfied with corndogs and Ferris wheels. These intrepid communities celebrate quirky bits of history and time-honored traditions that that make simple petting zoos seem boring. While some of these festivals might look bizarre at first glance, they serve the same purpose as the more run-of-the-mill gatherings: get a bunch of people together to have fun.

Of course, we at ShermansTravel.com understand if you don't want to actively participate in all of these events. Running from angry roller derby girls, chasing a wheel of cheese and eating bugs isn't for everyone. But if you're willing to forsake the classic amusement park rides and games for something slightly more adventurous, there's something for everyone in these weird festivals.

Just 65 miles east of London, in Sandwich, England, the sandwich was born. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the 4th Earl of Sandwich “creating” our favorite lunchtime, the Sandwich Celebration will feature dramatic reenactments of the first sandwich’s creation and sandwich making competitions. Go for the sandwiches; stay for the sandwiches!
