On February 9th 1966 the City of Philadelphia was awarded an NHL franchise. So February 9th 2016 marked the 50th birthday of the Philadelphia Flyers, and also the 2nd and final meeting of the season with the Anaheim Ducks. With the Flyers on a 2 game losing streak, but still within touching distance of the playoffs, a win would have been a fantastic birthday present to the team. It was not to be.

Right from the start, the Flyers found themselves on the back foot, as Anaheim continually attacked the puck.

Philadephia's goaltender, Steve Mason, was by far the busier of the 2.

...and at 10:27 of the was the first to be beaten, with a power play goal by Rickard Rakell

The Ducks continued to press...

...and within 5 minutes Rakell had his 2nd of the evening.

After that Philadelphia managed to put together a few shots on goal, bringing their total for the first period to 5, compared to the 15 shots that the Ducks had managed. But the more important disparity at the end of that period was the 2-0 scoreline.

The question then became - could the Flyers pick themselves up and make a game of it?

The 2nd period began as the 1st had ended, with the Flyers beginning to test Andersen in the Duck's goal, but not actually managing to get anything behind him into the net.

The Flyers just weren't connecting on much, including the hits. At one point forward Sam Gagner was sent sprawling after skating into the referee

But they continued to press, and attack

But it was still Anaheim that looked the mote likely to score, as they had several breakaways that eventually ended up going nowhere

The Flyers didn't seem to be in the contest at all

With the only other real action being at 14:44 of the period, when Brandon Manning and Patrick Maroon went toe to toe, earning both 5 minute majors.

In the 3rd period, the Flyers finally started to come to life

...and were rewarded at 13:55 with a Wayne Simmonds power play goal, that made it 3-1, and visibly gave the team the notion that they still had a way back into the game.

The Flyers pulled Mason with over 3 minutes remaining of the game, but couldn't find a way to score. Andrew Cogliano of the Ducks had no problem scoring an empty net goal in the final minute to make the final score 4-1, and leave the Flyers with a less than happy birthday
