Listen up, Obama supporters.

You need to stop this hysterical Clinton-bashing.

Barack Obama has captured your hearts and minds with his positive message of hope, and his promise of a new kind of politics.

The trouble is, I'm not seeing much of that spirit among his supporters.

Donald Sutherland, with whom I have worked, and who is both a wonderful actor and a true gentleman, wrote about Hillary here on the Huffington Post. His anger and moral indignation were sincerely felt, and typical:

"How much mendacity do we have to suffer, how much brazenness do we have to swallow before someone, anyone, has the decency, the common sense, to relieve us of this terrible trifle, this pathetic madness?"

To Hillary's supporters (more than 17 million of them), this tone is upsetting and genuinely inexplicable. They literally don't recognize the portrait. They don't see a "trifle" in universal health care, or see as "pathetic" her credentials as a progressive champion of women's rights. They don't find her fiscal blueprint "crazy" or see her vision for the country as a sure sign of her "venal personal ambition".

What's more, they are completely turned off by this kind of attack. They are likely to think that linguistically it feels misogynistic: "trifle" looks a little bit dismissive, they think. "Ambition" is hurled as an insult only at the female candidate; "crazy" has a faint whiff of hysteria in its implications; "pathetic" looks unnecessarily mean spirited in describing a woman who just won a state by more than 100,000 votes yesterday.

They get upset because (and I know that seems completely incomprehensible to you Obama supporters) they actually like Hillary Clinton, and they like her policy positions. They think she has a sure path to victory in November, and they think she'd make a great Democratic President.

Above all, they literally don't understand the ferocity with which Obama supporters feel her very presence in this primary is morally reprehensible. Yes, they recognize that Obama has won more pledged delegates, and they acknowledge that he is now more likely to win the nomination. But they also see that after more than 30 million people have gone to the polls, there is a difference of 30,000 or so votes between them, and that both candidates have a legitimate argument to make to the superdelegates.

So her supporters see the hatred for their candidate and to them it looks irrational. It seems more than a little ironic that she is criticized for her divisiveness with such aggression. It undermines the claim of "unity" around which Obama's campaign has been built. It pushes them away.

Every vicious and ill-informed comment on the web that demonizes Hillary Clinton as a lying, destructive Republican merely entrenches their support for someone they see as a champion of Democratic values. Every blog that casts her supporters as stupid, or racist merely turns them further off Obama.

And that's a dangerous situation. Because however much you scoff at it, and see it as irrelevant, it is an unarguable truth that more people have voted for Hillary Clinton than any other candidate in this Primary, or in any Democratic Primary ever.

Yes - I know that you'll be angry reading that, and that you feel it's meaningless, but try to see it dispassionately for a moment: all those people who voted for her, even if they live in Michigan, still exist. They may not "count", but they are flesh and blood, living, breathing Democrats who voted for Hillary. And they will count in November.

That's why, if Obama does become the nominee, Hillary Clinton has promised to "work her heart out" for him in the general election, and to do everything in her power to unify the party.

But it is you - his supporters - who currently represent perhaps the biggest barrier to that party unity. It is the vitriol you splutter forth into the comments section of the Huffington Post, and elsewhere that must stop if Clinton supporters are to feel part of an Obama-led party.

So, stop your Clinton-Bashing. Stop the hatred. And, whoever ends up being the nominee, remember what Barack Obama said back in Iowa:

"The time has come to move beyond the bitterness and pettiness and anger that's consumed Washington; to end the political strategy that's been all about division and instead make it about addition - to build a coalition for change that stretches through Red States and Blue States. Because that's how we'll win in November, and that's how we'll finally meet the challenges that we face as a nation."

UPDATE:

I should absolutely have acknowledged that Clinton supporters can be as vitriolic and unpleasant as Obama supporters. Apologies. My point was merely that your candidate looks set to be the nominee, and as such, it's you lot who are going to have to be as magnanimous in victory as Barack Obama is surely going to be. It's kind of funny that a post designed to suggest how alienating your vitriol is should have provoked such a flurry of, well, vitriol. I was not making an argument here that the popular vote tally was a reason for Hillary to win the nomination, merely that those people who have voted for her need to be won round, and you're not going to help that to happen by abusing their candidate. I see from the responses I have got that I obviously didn't make my argument very well.

I think you made a wonderful argument, and your support for Hilary Clinton is outstanding.

I think it's very hard to run for president and would love to see someone else do it. At least Hilary Clinton actually ran for president and it takes a tough woman to run for president, it isn't an easy job.

Simon Woods wrote, "...they offer two different models for the Presidency: put it in terms of the much discussed "day one", the Obama model is about the inauguration speech, and Clinton's is focused on the moment she gets back from the Capitol, sits down at that desk, and starts work."

Here's the link to the full article which I find to be an extension of the "he's only got a speech" attack.

Sorry, but as an Obama supporter in Texas, I was on the receiving end of a LOT more animosity than I gave out (and I didn't give out any, my position was I'd vote for whoever the nominee was).

I think a lot of this 'animosity' was manufactured by Hillary's campaign - for example, where were the Obama counter protestors on Saturday at the RBC meeting? Nobody was interested in creating a disturbance except Hillary's more fervent supporters.

I think Hillary would make a good VP; she certainly showed she has tenacity. Lighten up now, Hillary supporters, and listen to what Obama is saying. He's done nothing but praise her. Take his words to heart and let's unite for the good of America.

(part 2)
Sure, she still manipulates the emotions of several million people for whom gender trumps actions or issues, but while it's certainly disquieting to contemplate so many people unable to perceive their own self-interest and completely engulfed in one single emotion, such people are hardly the sort one can convince with an argument no matter how logical and well constructed. And isn't that what a campaign is all about? Making an argument based on facts and convincing people as to where their interests and the national interest lie? They will be no more swayed by such reasoning than any backwater pseudo-christian and pandering to them will yield no satisfactory result, it will merely cast doubt on the purity of our quest.

Everyone here has excellent points to make about Hillary Clinton's moral aptitude to hold high office, but I'd like to remind us all about some more practical points that make her selection as VP somewhat problematic.

Most of us refused to even consider her candidacy because of her Senate actions. She has consistently taken a course that - whether through miscalculations born of political ambition, or a deeply-held hawkish aggressiveness - has narrowly toed the neo-con line. She has also cast votes seemingly in direct contradiction with her avowed life-long concerns for the economic well-being and constitutional rights of her fellow Americans.

How will this play when attacking McCain, who believes the war wasn't an ill-conceived atrocity, but merely "mismanaged", as opposed to a criminal profiteering set-up? After all, he will then point to the hypocrisy of having one of its architects on the ticket, won't he? And when invoking the need and desire for radical change in the manner in which our political business is done, how to explain the presence on the ticket of one of the ultimate "insiders" and one of the more ruthless ones at that?
(end of part 1)

Hillary missed a historic opportunity and, in doing so, diminished a historic occasion. We are all the losers for this unimaginable failure. By not acknowledging the significance of the moment, she has stolen it as her own. It was for her to link the civil rights movement and the woman's movement as a common one. To tell her supporters that a victory for one is a victory for the other. To praise the fact that we after 232 years finally have the first non-white male candidate in the history of this country. We can only hope that with time she will come to appreciate the significance of all this. The door is now open to all--no mater what their race or gender. It is now for all of us, Obama and Clinton supporters to show her how it should be done by coming together and supporting our nominee.

Sometimes I wonder if the RNC is trolling these sites to pit sides against each other in order to weaken the rising tide against their party....

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but most of the people in my circle aren't nearly as divisive as these posts can be (and these are folks that support either Hillary or Barack). Unfortunately, hatred is easily bred.

"I wonder if the RNC is trolling these sites to pit sides against each other in order to weaken the rising tide against their party..."

AbsoLUTEly! I would bet a year's salary on that.

Having said that, I must point out that Sen. Clinton's failure to acknowledge Obama's clear victory last night was a shameful, selfish stab in the back to the Democratic party's chances in November.

The ball is in Hillary's camp for reconciliation. After tonight's narcissistic non-concession speech, it's clear that her heart wants her to go with a scorched earth policy. But, her head will soon correct that when she realizes that it's not in HER self-interest -- evidently the only interest this soulless woman truly considers.

Hillary Clinton has once again shown us who she really is, a classless, selfish and egotistical woman who only cares about her supporters to the extent she can use them to manipulate herself into the #2 spot on Obama's ticket. She ran a dirty campaign, she lied and she cheated. She is incapable of admitting she's wrong or of apologizing for her stupid comments. We've already had 8 years of blind stubborness, holier than thou, diry politics and dirtier politicians and I see no reason why we should want more of the same. Hillary is more of the same. She hasn't earned respect, she's lost it! So to you hillary supporters, wake up and see the truth, it's not about you, its all about her and her sense of entitlement. Enough of her, enough about her. If she really cared as she pretends to, about this country and this party she would gracefully concede and support the "real" nominee immediately, NO folks, she doesn't care about you, don't fool yourselves.

I may have been prepared to offer Hillary my hand in friendship and once again offer an olive branch, but after her performance tonight, all bets are off. She really blew it for herself, her legacy and the Party. Obama came out prepared to make it an "It's all about you" night and she made it her "It's all about me" night.

And you wonder why so many people want her off the stage?

Dear Simon: There are actually many posts on this website that remind Obama supporters to welcome Clinton supporters and not offend them. There are also many posts from Clinton supporters inexplicably accusing Obama of being vicious towards their candidate and blaming him for her "demise." You are basically asking us to not attack HRC, even though she attacked our candidate with one-sided vitriol all through this campaign. And you expect us to do as you bid. Kind of like HRC chastised the press for being mean to her, and since then, they've done nothing but pander to her. Even tonight, when Obama and his supporters should be celebrating, the headlines are all about Clinton. I'll tell you what, I don't care who you are, HRC should get everything that's coming to her. Her campaign against Obama was a national shame. For whatever she says she stands for, all anyone here can see now is that she stands for "me, me, me," and nothing more. One by one, if I find a Clinton supporter who is willing to embrace the truth about Obama's generosity and grace towards HRC during this primary, and who is willing to face facts and see that Hillary has never returned the favor, that she refused to admit she had lost and therefore caused all this friction between the camps, then I embrace those individuals one by one.

Better than not bashing her, I prefer to ignore her. She has shown through her actions that she will not concede to this man. That's fine. They owe each other nothing. And he's got bigger fish to fry.

Most of her 17 million will show that they are true Democrats when the issues like healthcare, the economy and the failed war take center stage. Those that don't will be convinced to vote for one candidate or the other. For one reason or another.

Her role in this process is effectively over. I will treat her the same way I do Edwards or Biden.
