Why Kate Middleton Is Not A Style Icon

Posted: 04/20/2012 11:00 am

The appeal of Kate Middleton's style is lost on me. It's always felt just a little too... safe? Yes, she's refreshingly down-to-earth and sure, her ability to incorporate mass retailers like Zara is relatable to many. But iconic? No. I think ultimately, for me, it's that Kate Middleton doesn't really take chances with her clothes, or hair or makeup for that matter. Admittedly, she's someone whose every move is watched, and she is a member of the British monarchy, but she needs to "loosen up a bit" or "change course." Perhaps she should first look to Princess Diana for a few pointers.

Off-duty Diana (I'm talking early days) was as stylish as a princess can get. With her oversized tweed blazers and 501s, it felt so natural, effortless. All with a little edge. (Sorry Kate, but J. Brands and slouchy pirate boots do not a style icon make.) To me, great personal style never feels played-by-the-book. I think Kate Middleton is overthinking it. And the result of that? A style that looks more designed by committee than by personal preference.

For starters, it's time to toss those nude nylon pantyhose. (Incidentally, this is something hotly contested around here at the office.) But for real, why does she wear those? I get that she's a duchess, and they probably make her feel more polished, pulled-together and what not, but it's 2012, time to take a different approach.

Next, her hair: The half-up, half-down style is a relic of a bygone era. As are the bouncy, curled ends. It's confusing and pageant-y.

And the eyeliner! What's going on there? Lining her entire eye with black liner is a bold move (especially for daytime, as she seems to prefer). Eyeliner this dark only makes her eyes look smaller. It's not really doing her any favors. She should try something in a less-aggressive shade of bronze or brown.

Also, what's with all the shrunken blazers? Paired with mid-calf riding boots? Kate's in a style rut. I can understand that being in the spotlight and now being official royalty and all, there are some standards to uphold, but let loose a little. Once she relaxes, then her true sense of style (and potential style icon status) will begin to evolve. It should be noted that she recently wore vintage, which revealed a glimmer of hope for more adventurous, experimental outfits to come.

I will hand it to her though: Her perma-smile is genuinely charming. So she wins some points there.

Sorry! Totally disagree with you! You are off on every single point. First, she looks like a LADY..not a tramp. Elegant, understated. SHE IS NOT DIANA...she is her own woman as she should be.

Who could fault this Woman's hair? My goodness girl..she has GORGEOUS GORGEOUS brunette hair, very classic as a Princess should be.

The statement about the hose is simply ridiculous. First..the Queen mandates that she wears them, and I applaud Kate for respecting the Queen's wishes. Second, she started a phenomena with the hose that many of us have missed for years! Maybe YOU are sorely behind the times? HMMM???

I agree with all your points accept for the hose. I found panty hoses itchy! lol.

Of course, Kate Middleton is not a style icon. She is royalty. It seems to me that the problem is not Kate but the whole notion of 'style icon.' Under Ms. Kitchens' qualifications laid out here, it seems that the title of "style icon" can only be for the likes of Olivia Palermo, Carine Roitfeld, or Daphne Guinness -- as in, only for wealthy women who do nothing but think about fashion and work in fashion. But when I think of my personal favorite style icons -- Katherine and Audrey Hepburn, Sofia Coppola, Rachel Bilson, etc. -- I believe a true style icon is someone who builds a style that uniquely suits their needs. Kate's in a precarious position because she needs to be royal and accessible at the same time. Maybe you think her coat dresses are boring -- but she needs something that will look professional and stylish while she greets crowds outside a children's hospital on a February morning. From McQueen, to Jenny Packham, to Alice Temperley, Kate has been an absolute credit to British fashion. Most importantly, she's looked comfortable and happy in every outfit I've seen her in. Does every model in the pages of W and Vogue look comfortable and happy? No. But you don't see women rushing out to emulate Lara Stone and Karlie Kloss, do you? If the word 'icon' necessitates a popular element to it, then Kate has that in spades.

The U.S. first lady is considered an icon, yet looks overdone and dreadful quite often. Too sparkly, too tight, and too much skin, not to mention stratospheric costs, is the new 'forumula for icon status in the media. Is that what the author of this post admires ? No wonder she finds Kate 'boring'.

Michelle's style is not always "on", but that's what happens when you take risks like she does. She keeps it interesting, and when she DOES get it right, its a trend. On the flip side, playing it safe means you almost always look good, but don't create anything interesting or new. It depends on what your priorities are when you dress. Classic and timeless, or cutting edge fashion?

Kate is not and am sure has no desire to be trendy. She is a lovely, soft spoken, conservatively dressed member of the monarchy. Think She feels she has no need nor desire to be hot or dressed like a hooker. Her style will evolve over the years as she evolves as a wife, mother.

The Duchess is already widely admired and copied. I personally thank her for taking a few young women away from the hoochie mama look.. So many young ladies just give out TMI, it looks kind of desperate and sad.
I thank her for bringing back tights, what anyone finds attractive about bare, veiny legs is beyond me.
And high, high heels on bare feet are not only painful, but stinky.
She is a beautiful woman, and I too, wish she would cut back on the black eyeliner, except for that, she is perfection, and a great asset to the Royal family.

I don't agree! I think she looks perfect, all the time! I am not sure why your opinion is the last word; I know mine isn't. I just admire they way she has a polished, elegant appearance, and as a princess and a future queen, she can wear nude pantyhose if she want to or anything else she wants. She is not required to be-dazzle any one or "best" Diana, whom I also admired. I think William is fortunate to have married her! To me, she looks regal enough as is!

She is a bit "girl next door"-ish. Which would be fine, except . . . realistically, she's about as far from the girl next door as one can get. On the other hand, I think we were all a little spoiled by Diana's extraordinary style - really, who would want to have to follow that act?

I don't agree that Kate isn't the girl next door. She is very much like the nice young newlywed women we all know, which is why people are drawn to her. Obviously she and William have wealth and standing that most people don't have but they seem to be living their life as they want it, which seems pretty mundane and "next door" to me. There will come a time when they won't have that luxury.

As for comparisons to Diana, people forget that Diana didn't start out as the style icon she became. Kate shouldn't be required to compete with Diana in standing with critics; she's plenty wise on her own and she's doing fine!

Neither she nor her sister have any real style. Kate dresses too much like my age which is too safe for her age I guess. She has to be proper so I can imagine that it is harder for her to experiment but judging from her sister she was probably never going to be innovating when it comes to clothes

I couldn't agree more. I personally am bored by her style. She needs more pizzaz. Her look is too easy to pull off. An icon should have a style that can be channeled, but not fully replicated.

As for Kate's clothing selling out, if it was that popular wouldn't you see women wearing the outfits on the street. I live in Los Angeles and spend a lot of time in San Francisco, I've never seen a woman in any of Kate's dresses. I suspect a lot of the people buying them are hoping to sell them for a profit on eBay or at a future auction like one of Diana's dresses.

Before anyone laughs at where I live, I've seen women in shift dresses, wrap dresses, espadrilles, neutral pumps, etc. all over the place. I just have to walk into a church or an office or an art museum or a theater to see them. They weren't wearing Kate's exact dresses, but they were wearing these types of clothes without Kate's help in the style department.

I've never thought that Kate was a style icon. If you go to church on a Sunday or work in a law office during the week or have a job in any environment that requires conservative professional clothing, you see Kate Middleton's all of the time and those women were dressing that way long before they knew Kate existed. They didn't need Kate to show them how to do it.

She's never given the impression that she aspires to be a fashion icon. If others want to label her as such, oh well. She dresses and lives the way that works for her.

Royals have never (except for Diana) been considered fashion icons.

I completely agree. I think the icon thing was thrust upon her by the media and the palace PR machine, but it's a statement that has been repeated over and over again in the past year so it's still a question that can be discussed and debated in a forum like this one.

to be honest, she is only a Royal. She doesn't have to be a trendsetter, she just has to dress well, which she does. Very well. My problem is people ACTING like she dresses so amazingly. Like her very dull wedding dress. All that hype...for what? I saw such dresses in the mid-90s, and I'm sure all the gushers didn't give a damn when they saw all those ordinary women wearing them.
09:07 PM on 04/22/2012
She isn't really Royal. That is her problem. William made a mistake with this one.

To be honest it probably is a little safe but I think it is her personal style.

You can tell she doesn't have a stylist or make up artist, it's all her and that's what makes it effortless.

I prefer for someone to be a little less fussy than all these fashion divas that you know take hours before they step out of their room due to the share number of staff who attend to them to get dressed.
01:22 PM on 04/22/2012
Stop picking on Kate. She is my icon and that you would even post this makes me appalled. So i suggest you focus on your style because trust me you dress BAD.So stop picking on the prettiest girls in the world and focus on yourself. And how dare you even go back to diana thats how she died....PRESS AND MEDIA....And i dont think anyone wants that to happen to kate....lets take a vote....its the world vs you looks like world wins ms kitchens....
06:37 PM on 04/22/2012
I agree with you. Kate is Kate with nothing added to her such as fake lashes, nails, ect. She is real.
09:05 PM on 04/22/2012
Might be "real" but what is real about her is "real boring", and I'm not so much talking about her cloths but just her in general.
