It's not easy being an actor: as hard as it is to know and be one's self, it's even harder to be someone else.

Delivering a convincing performance, whether that requires tears or deadpan or sheer anger, requires, more than anything, a mastery of dialogue so natural that saying somebody else's words looks organic and real. How actors go about it, though, is part of what differentiates them as artists.

The Hollywood Reporter sat down with some leading candidates for this year's Emmy nomination for lead dramatic actor, including "Shameless" star William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi of "Boardwalk Empire" and Tom Selleck of "Blue Bloods," and amongst other things, they spoke about how they approach learning their lines.
