“That is definitely a possibility. But another possibility is the scope, and power, of the pharmaceutical and psychiatrist industry in Western countries. You will note that the DSM keeping getting larger and the scope of various conditions, or diseases, keeps expanding. (Though I will note that, on rare occassion, they reverse themselves i.e., Asperger's was taken out this revision and homosexuality was taken out a few decades ago.) But it does, sometimes, seem a pill is the solution for everything. Too active. Take a pill. Depressed. Take a pill. Anxious. Take a pill. Can't focus. Take a pill. Frightening often with out much, if any, over-sight, counseling, or monitoring and given to children at a young age and give away to soldiers like candy.”

“At some point isn't depression, or even worse, actually a logical response to one's environment or stimuli (or lack thereof?) It is this ideal of "always being happy" really a logical or healthy one? Especially in times of constant war, bad economy, corruption, lose of common value and religion, etc? One could easily imagine why a severely abused child, for example, would get a multi-personality disorder or become catatonicly depressed. A way to escape, a way to rationalize one's abuse, a form of protection/avoidance of the reality. Why wouldn't it also be, on the spectrum, that many in the West are getting moderately, or even severely, depressed?”

“Of course there is white-on-white violence! Most violence is, usually, done to each other by the same race (aside from officially sanctioned violence during a war between different countries in different parts of the world.) But, aside from maybe an Old Firm match, kidding, the violence at a soccer match is NOTHING compared the violence endemic in African culture. Comparing some hooligans fighting over a football match on Saturday to chopping off limbs, raping the women, and recruiting the young boys to be soldier after killing their own father is plainly ridiculous!”

“Of course, it doesn't. But there is a serious problem with middle-class, and even rich, children -usually white- emulating the "urban" culture and bringing more violence and hood-like culture into better areas of town. Likely due to the influence of the media and the popularity caused by Hollywood and the music industry of the hip-hop and urban lifestyle.”

“"Snap out of it" is another good one to use.

But, seriously, if you look at the map of depression in the world you'll most are in Western countries. Is this something genetic? Is this something related to much of the rest of world is, literally, working so hard just to survive daily that they can't "have time to dwell on things"? Or is it because we had a good economy, freedom, homogeneous society with shared values/religion, and peace for some decades and now the economies are crumbling, politicians don't listen to the people, the government has become an Orwellian police state, our governments threaten us daily with scares from terrorism to end-of-the-world scenarios like this "warming"? Or is it do with the nutrition (or lack thereof) and the over-medication of society- throwing pills like candy to people to "fix" them without much over-sight? Is it due to replacing traditional religion with consumerism or non-belief? It is myths like "anyone can be President" and "self-made man" being destroyed? Or being over-saturated by Hollywood and the uber-rich and knowing that that lifestyle is impossible for most people?”

“It could just be that the health care system has more capacity to diagnose and treat depression in the developed world. Doesnt mean that depression doesnt exist. It is likely that is does exist (I would argue that it probably does at higher rates among chronically stressed populations - war, poverty, etc). The medical system though may not have the capacity or the will to deal with it. If a doctor doesnt believe that depression should or does exist, a person will not "have" it. If the hospitals are busy treating basic needs or responding to other problems (HIV, dissentary, etc) depression will not be diagnosed. None of these things prevent a person from experiencing depression - depression by the way is not "dwelling on things" it is a health condition - it prevent the diagnosis and treatment.”

When a black person kills a black person that is deviant behavior and when a white person kills a white person it is not deviant behavior. All violence without regard to race is immoral and when we point the finger at one race without considering all people who commit crimes against humanity is morally wrong.”

Obama: 'If Congress Refuses To Act' On Unemployment Benefits, 'It Will Actually Harm Our Economy'

“It is a bizarre thing. We have Obama. He has been in charge for a long time. Yet, he keeps wanting expansions of various give-aways. Whether it was the awful bail-outs for bankers started by the dastardly Bush, or these expansions of unemployment benefits, the SNAP, the WIC, and now is agitating for raising the minimum wage. In this Obama economy we shouldn't need any of this. He has fixed everything so why thing like minimum wage raise? In an Obama economy the employment level should be such that, if anything, we need a wage ceiling. Right? He is "the One".”

Jdm82 on Dec 8, 2013 at 04:23:29

“Minimum wage raise would be single handedly the best thing any congress or president could do for our countries long term sustainability. Its pretty simple to figure out why some people would rather sit on there ass's and collect hand outs from the government via welfare and foodstamps then to get a job. And that is frankly because its more lucrative to collect government gifts then work a full time minimum wage job. You raise the minimum wage to 10 dollars an hour you'll see an over night drop in unemployment claims as well as many other programs. And the bs about it causing some sort of inflation in stores is just silly. Prices will go up but most consumers wouldn't notice the difference. ( were talking pennies per item)”

HST on Dec 8, 2013 at 04:16:14

“Raising the minimum wage is a give-away?-LOL You're against raising wages but complain about more people using SNAP? Can you be anymore of a corporate lackey? The "one" must be your IQ. Like most right wingers you can't put forth a coherent argument to save your life. As you complain that Obama hasn't totally cleaned up Bush's 8 year mess in 5 years, keep in mind that you don't look too smart. Better stick to what your kind does best -calling your fellow Americans names like "moochers" and "takers" while you endorse policies to multiply their numbers.”

Even if we set off every pickup truck, SUVs, and nuclear bomb the earth would still be around. And I often wonder how my pickup is also causing warming on other planets?
