Restaurant's Secret Memo On How To Spot A Food Critic Spotted By Food Critic

Commented Mar 20, 2014 at 01:18:32 in Taste

“I used to use some of these points when trying to identify a "secret shopper." I wouldn't necessarily treat that person any differently, but alerting the manager and/or cooks would be a must if I had that suspicion.”

Next Time You're Tempted To Give A Bad Tip, Consider This

“I waited tables for over 8 years. Every year at tax time I had to shell out around 2 thousand dollars in taxes because the 2.13/hour isn't enough to cover the amount claimed in income. I wasn't making enough money to really have a savings account, and it was always stressful come tax time. How often do you pay for YOUR meals in cash? In the majority of cases these days, people pay with credit cards. And in the case of credit card tips, they are automatically reported to the government. Also be aware that all the money that servers tip out to bartenders, hostesses and food runners are reported to the government as their own wages and are taxed on THAT money as if they leave home with that cash in their pockets. So... please know what you're talking about first.”

“RE: So... please know what you're talking about first.

Oh yeah, all tips are on credit cards...that's why you never see tip jars.”

“Not all states report that statistic, but of those who do, whites make up the majority of legal abortions. Blacks are a close second. The various Hispanic/Latino populations which are one of our fastest growing populations have very low abortion rates.”

“Cooking a meal in 30 min or less is not difficult, but it depends on what you're trying to pull off. If I'm in no mood to cook... I can cook a piece of salmon and throw it on a salad in ten minutes. I can whip up a simple pasta dish in 15. But, if people are coming over it's going to take a little longer, and I'm going to make a little more effort. Also, I'm not going to spend my Sundays chopping veggies and making stock. More power to you if you are... you probably have an urban garden and some chickens in the back yard too. I'm not that awesome.”

“I love all of you who don't consume ANY of these products. Good for you. I suspect you all wear monocles, sew your own clothes and ride a bike to work too. Someone give these people a trophy (made of recycled Tom's toothpaste containers and Whole Food's paper bags.) You all are still part of this consumer driven USA. You're reading Huffington Post for Christ's sake... that's just as bad as popping a couple of tylenol, chasing it with a Coke and washing your clothes in Tide. Which I'm doing right now! Sorry people, even if you're not eating these foods you are still at their mercy. Their advertising dollars are everywhere, and their money lines the pockets of our politicians. Though, I don't doubt your home-grown tomatoes and urban chicken coop eggs are much more delicious than Egg-O Waffles. That I believe.”

“Tom's toothpaste is owned by one of these companies. I think Whole Foods is too.”

“my homemade waffles from scratch with organic wheat- ,free range non antiboiotic chicken eggs, and grass fed organic milk r more tasty than eggos, and fresher.......... but eggos are good too ... food is a sacred blessing and finding a connection to it from beginning to end is important in the life of any living thing”

“What's wrong with monocles, the Monopoly guy wears one. It's rather dashing. Actually no that's not near as bad, your analogy makes about as much sense as saying, Oh stubbing your toe is about as bad as having a massive coronary.”

“My sister and I received a Tassimo coffee maker for Christmas a couple of years ago. Yes, it's a rip off per cup of coffee, but neither one of us drink much coffee. So, it's perfect for us. If I drank coffee every day then I'm sure we'd use a standard coffee maker, but we don't. I've seen these coffee makers in waiting rooms lately. I think it makes sense in these situations. Would you rather have a cup of four-hour old coffee or something that you quickly make yourself while waiting for the mechanic to put new tires on your car?”

“I'm not saying Americans (or myself especially) don't know how to cook. Like I said, it's about convenience and the facade of saving money. And saving time is the American Way. It's not even about laziness. Industry and Technology make money when they offer a means (or an illusion of means) to save time. Time is money, and money is in the driver's seat. What good will come out of throwing our hands up and calling Americans fat and lazy? I think that's lazy. Like I said earlier, we need to raise our voices and demand healthier and better options. It does work. The giant mega-monster that is Walmart has increased their organic and locally sourced options as a result of demand. These fast-food chains can come around. But, it's up to us, the consumer, to demand higher quality food within their convenience fast-food model.”

“Let's be honest here. It's not the food that keeps bringing people back; it's the convenience. I don't think anyone would argue that a McDonald's Big Mac tastes better than a home-cooked meal. The lure of a drive-thru is tempting in our convenience driven world. On top of that, every one of these chains has a "value menu" option which makes the food appear inexpensive. And everyone likes to save a little time and money. We all know that healthy food can be very affordable, and sure a healthy meal can be whipped up in thirty minutes or less but when rushing kids from school to soccer practice after you've worked a full day at the office, the giant glowing arches offers a quick and cheap solution to filling hungry bellies. All we can do is keep voicing our desires for healthier options. Because I don't think there will ever be a time when Americans don't want to save a little time and money.”

“If you would learn how to cook, you could provide your family healthy foods at a big savings. Americans are becoming lazier as the years go by.”
