“Powerful statements Allison. Thanks for the differing perspective. It lends a different point of view to a recurring groups of feelings with seemingly no end in sight. I do however disagree with the notion of "Not being enough" as although it took me sometime to get to this place, I;m now standing in my own brand of dignity and grace not requiring the appeasement or acceptance of others. Like I said it did take some time to get here but thank God I AM FREE! :)”

“I'm still trying to see where does white woman and black man equate in America but OK. I see your point of "that's right you're discriminated against Tony, but yeah so am I"”

LittleLadyWolf on May 25, 2014 at 09:53:58

“They don't equate: not exactly. No type of prejudice is exactly the same, by any measurable standard. Being a Jew from Eastern Europe, a black man in America, a Muslim in China, a woman anywhere - all different particulars facing measurably different prejudices. And yet, there is, I think, a commonality here - the insistent messaging faced by minorities, women, certain ethnicities, religious groups etc., to lesser or greater extent, that 'You are not enough. You are not one of us. And you never will be.' I always try to think of it more universally, but maybe that's just my own coping mechanism for when some old white dude asks me to be a sweetheart and get him some coffee.”

“Thanks Keith. A shared perspective but the healing is not something we can experience is the scab is continuously removed by folks daily. Platitude belongs to those that believe that ultimately I should be ashamed of such feelings knowing good and well that the abuse and struggle continues even today. I am no longer a product of poverty but yet no matter where I go, whether it be Georgetown or Tyson's Corner, its implied when I shop that some folks have to help me "save money". With over 50 FTEs, I have employees that are perceived to be the boss of my company when white people come to our building. Of course I remind them otherwise and at times had to show them the door. You see, we have advanced greatly in developing a system of fairness of which the young lady's TED talk references. I will say that there is still more work to do if the balance of equality continues to be a stained canvas that we're all attempting to shape and color suing our own individual perspective as a social lens or in this case as a brush.”

“LittleLadyW, Thanks for your post.

The problem in America is she should be ashamed of herself. The marketing plan is flawed. I'm retired military and although I love this country, her citizen's and some of the harm they do to others based upon fear is another story.

I am now president of my company, fed contractor with over 50 employees and even here in our nation's capital (DC) I still get the blank stares in banks and institutions of shall we say MEANS. This conduct is usually laughable but its a darn shame that we still have more perfecting to do with this "so-called Union" of ours we seek to build.”

LittleLadyWolf on May 24, 2014 at 17:43:02

“I am in complete agreement. Both racism and sexism are still rampant, significant societal ills that have not been addressed with the seriousness these issues deserve. As a woman working in technology, a largely male dominated field, it has been consistently harder to be taken seriously, so often assumed to be an assistant and, at conferences, I have been mistaken for the wife or girlfriend tag-along of a co-worker more times than I can count. While the details differ, I imagine the experience of racism to be quite similar: a thousand slights and casual dismissals (or worse) that just pick, pick pick away at your soul.”

“Growing up in New Orleans, I can remember how as a kid I was shopping at Krause, a local department store using my hard earned bucks from a fast food job I had at the time and being accosted by the store security folks for stealing a locket out of the store. The only person standing next to me was an elderly white woman that I saw trying on the jewelry only seconds prior. I told them to ask her and she of course came with this story of how all of us black folks are nothing but trouble and how theft "is our middle name". Well, there was a black loss prevention officer that went back to run the footage on those old camera systems and this is where they saw the lady place the locket into her pocket. He then proceeded to call the police and the police showed up and searched the woman. This is when they found the locket. She was let go and not arrested. They finally let me go. No apologies, nothing. I until this day don;t trust certain people for this and many other reasons. Sometimes there are things in life that scar you and prevent you from ever getting close to "some people". Too much damage and no healing I suppose.”

LittleLadyWolf on May 24, 2014 at 15:13:53

“I am so sorry this happened and sorry that it has had repercussions in your life down through the years. As I white, blonde woman, this isn't something I regularly face. However, one time, when I was in my early 20's, I was stopped at a store by several security guards, who seemed convinced that I was shoplifting. They called the police and had me searched, finding, of course, nothing. They let me go, but one security guard told me as I left that if I ever came back he'd be watching me. It was my first and last such experience, and I took away from it so many things. First, it was 10 times more humiliating and infuriating than I ever imagined such a situation could be. I also realized that this was just a fluke, and not something that I'd have to live in general fear of. I also came to *better* understand what it was like for many minorities, to have to live with incidents like this happening repeatedly, living with the fear of it, what it can do to one's psyche.”
