Giving Boys A Love Of Reading

“Good list for young readers. Research shows that boys stop reading in 3rd grade. To combat the 4th grade reading slump, see my website boysread.org and visit my "Best Books" page. Here you'll find hundreds of titles that reluctant middle grade boys will love.”

“My students (4th grade) love atlas', almanacs, funny poetry books, anything by R.L. Stine.”

“Thanks for this insightful article, Richard. It's amazing how many articles I see come out of the UK that have government funding addressing the gender-gap reading issue between boys and girls. My website, boysread.org is used by teachers, parents, and guardians as a resource tool for transforming boys into lifelong readers. Our teachers and students have a very tough year ahead of them. Just last night, the Tacoma city school district teachers voted to go on strike. There are no silver bullets for immediate change.”

“I enjoyed reading your article about boy’s literacy. I’m the founder of a new, innovative literacy program called Boys Read. Boys Read’s mission is to transform boys into lifelong readers. We’re an organization of parents, educators, librarians, mentors, authors, and booksellers. A core objective of Boys Read is to establish Reading Tribes. Tribes are informal reading circles for pleasure and non-deterministic learning. They’re very similar to book clubs. Tribes are a great opportunity to bond with boys. A Tribe Leader acts as a mentor and facilitator for the Tribe. Parents, teachers, librarians, booksellers, coaches, and other community outreach programs and services organize Tribes. Our website features many extraordinary authors who have published numerous compelling and gripping novels that boys love. For more information about Boys Read, visit our website at boysread.org.”
