Steven Moffat: It Was Stupid Of BBC To Cancel 'Doctor Who'

Steven Moffat: It Was Stupid Of BBC To Cancel 'Doctor Who'

Commented Nov 21, 2013 at 10:26:51 in TV

“Here's hoping that this series of Dr. Who is better than the last, which was mostly bad. You have to put up with a high level of pompous, moralizing preachiness to be able to enjoy what makes Dr. Who a good show, but during the last series the preachiness just overwhelmed to the point of making me turn off a number of episodes without finishing them. The episode "A Town Called Mercy" was one of the worst episodes I think any long-running show has ever produced.”

Universe May Not Be Expanding After All, Cosmologist Says

Commented Jul 17, 2013 at 23:10:39 in Science

“Then that would take me to my second issue: gravitation. Wetterich's theory would throw a big monkey wrench into gravitation because the force of gravity has been experimentally proven. If matter in the universe is gaining mass, even imperceptibly so, yet not moving around through space, wouldn't that mean that the gravitational constant is not, in fact, constant? Or, perhaps, that there is some undiscovered proportionately increasing force that works against the force of gravity (perhaps even resulting from the Higgs field itself)?”

randyman99 on Jul 18, 2013 at 03:24:07

“The interesting thing about gravity is that when you calculate the rate of motion between two bodies due to gravity, the mass falls out of the equation. It doesn't matter. Galileo demonstrated that with the two balls he dropped from the Tower of Pisa.”

“I'm afraid that dark matter is something that goes beyond my knowledge. But depending on how wrong our current calculations of the universe's mass is based on Wetterich's theory, that might negate the whole need for dark matter anyway, or at least part of it, which, in a way, would simplify things.”

“The answer that I generally get to that question (I'm not a physicist, though I did take some courses in college, so I do have a basic understanding of the science) is that the universe has no edge. Space is merely a void through which matter and energy pass (be it the regular or the dark kind). So what's on the outer edge of the universe is probably just nothing at all.”

“If true, the question would then be: where is the extra mass and energy coming from? If the speed of light is fixed, then for an object to spontaneously increase in mass it would have to do so by absorbing a proportionate amount of energy. Otherwise, e would not equal m(c^2).

Such a fact would also have major implications for gravitational theory as well (depending upon the rate of mass inflation, of course).”

Pseudoscalar on Jul 17, 2013 at 21:33:25

“The question I have is. Even if the energy is increasing due to special relativity. Could it be measured?”

randyman99 on Jul 17, 2013 at 14:05:43

“Without having read his treatise, I'm guessing it comes from the Higgs field (associated with the Higgs boson), which has a non-zero rest energy. There is a theory that this field did have zero rest energy at the big bang, but has been increasing ever since, and it is this non-zero rest energy which contributes to the attribute of mass in sub-atomic particles. As the strength of the field increases, the mass of particles increases, hence the mass of macroscopic objects increases. In our present day this rate of increase is imperceptible, but over millions and billions of years, such as is detected with telescopes looking at the far reaches of the universe, this would show up as the red shift.

So his theory is that all the galaxies are just hanging out in space, and always have been, and aren't expanding or contracting. Now somebody's going to have to come up with a theory of how they got to where they are (theology aside).

Perhaps rather than the changing Higgs field affecting the mass of an object, it really affects the speed of light, and it is the speed of light that has been changing since the big bang singularity. Remember, you heard it here first.”

Supreme Court Does Not Announce Rulings On Affirmative Action, Voting Rights, Gay Marriage

Commented Jun 13, 2013 at 11:25:39 in Politics

“While affirmative action programs have been implemented with the best of intentions, more and more evidence is coming to light that they are, on average, bad for the students who wouldn't otherwise be chosen to attend elite universities like Princeton or Harvard. Such students are far more likely to drop out of, and to not complete, college than are similarly situated minority students who attend non-elite universities.

While that situation doesn't necessarily address the constitutionality issue (though it does undermine the compelling governmental interest that the states often cite for why they aren't violating the Equal Protection Clause), it does make the reason why such universities support affirmative action programs all the more galling. They essentially say that having a diverse student body is good for the students in general because they get to interact and communicate with people they wouldn't otherwise interact or communicate with. This is probably true, but, judging by the data, the universities are in effect saying that they are willing to throw away the futures of black and Hispanic students so that the college experiences of white and Asian students can be enhanced.”
