“And even if the law wasn't actually on the books in all of the countries who would like them to be, these governments are still sending out government security forces, and encouraging private citizens, to kill homosexuals, and refuse to prosecute anyone guilty of killing a gay person. Every dollar you give to Card ultimately allows NOM and Card to fund violence and hatred. How is that "tolerant?"”

“NC's legislature is downright Evil. There has to be justice to those countless protesters getting arrested. Now, because of their arrest record, the fascists in the legislature will try to deny their right to vote.”

“NC is in the midst of a huge battle between the progressive and reactionary forces. We went for Obama in 2008, and all of the large cities voted against the anti-gay marriage amendment. All of this is a sign of the struggle, which we are determined to win. This may be the last gasp of the reactionaries trying to hold back progress. At least we hope so. The bill won't pass - what's much more dangerous are the legislative attempts to pass laws against early voting, requiring voter ID laws, and other anti-democratic initiatives. We have them scared, but the battle isn't over.”

“Before everyone condemns the entire state, please remember that there are GOP crazies in all of the states who submit bills like this that won't go anywhere. The GOP has gerrymandered the electoral map to ensure that Democrats are marginalized. NC is a battleground state in the truest sense of the word. They are trying to enact legislation to curtail early voting, prevent election day registration, require voter ID cards. They wouldn't be doing all of that if they didn't see the writing on the wall, that started being inscribed when NC voted for Obama in 2008. They are afraid of the changes that are occurring in the state and the electorate, so they're trying everything they can to turn back the tide. Support us, don't equate the whole state with these lunatics.”

“Phelps' estranged son has said that in fact the "church" is running out of money, which may explain why they often threaten to show up at places and then don't. Again, if you read something that claimed government paid a claim for action by an individual, whoever wrote that was incorrect.”

“No, you are mistaken. There is a difference between a lawsuit against an individual who may or may not be found guilty and subject to paying damages, but government has what is called sovereign immunity and may not be sued without it's permission. At best they could get relief from any law passed that is proven to violate their constitutional rights. The whole concept of laws guarding civil rights is that individuals are protected from GOVERNMENT action that violates those rights, not individuals who may do something to them. So if someone breaks their windshield, they can sue them, but it's not the government who is the defendant, nor would they be liable for damages.”

“I think you're probably referring to one court case where the victim lost in court and was required to pay the WBC court costs after he sued them and lost. They would have to bring charges against anyone and prove vandalism before they could receive any money from any acts like breaking windshields, and it's not from government. I know in one case they all had their tires slashed, and no one in town would repair it for them so they limped home, but they could never prove who did it.”

Yes, it was a horrible thing that he did - but I set the bar higher standard for my government's behavior. If that's what you want from your government, I suggest you might be happier living in Iran or Afghanistan.”

“The point isn't whether these two people are sympathetic characters. Of course they're not. It's not about them, it's about the rest of us. The point is whether a society where it is now estimated 1 in 25 people on death row are innocent should be using the power of the state to take people's lives, and in such a horrific, inhumane fashion. What is it about the Constitutional provision about no cruel or unusual punishment that places like Oklahoma doesn't understand?”

I sure his cause is a good one, but to act as though those trying to save these beautiful, important animals from cruelty is less important is arrogant and obnoxious. You just made me determined to donate even more to saving these maligned victims of human cruelty.”

Would you rather your child be in a school where a deranged person entered with a pair of scissors or an automatic weapon? 56 children under 20 are killed by guns every week in the US. There are disturbed and angry people everywhere in the world, but only in the US do we allow them to arm themselves with weapons of mass destruction and see this kind of slaughter occurring every single day.”
Should A Professor Breastfeed While Teaching Class?

Should A Professor Breastfeed While Teaching Class?

Commented Sep 16, 2012 at 18:49:22 in Parents

“I'm saying there's a time and place for everything.  And yes, if the mother is treating feeding her child as something so routine that she can do it while trying to lecture, she is the one minimizing the importance.  I think it's ridiculous to act as though nursing is at all times and in all places some sort of glorious noble act that everyone should be wonderstruck by is silly.  And to presume that everyone should be happy to watch, as a captive audience, yes, is egocentric.  As I said I have no problem with breast feeding in public and most women are, and want to be, discrete about it.  Doing it in front of a class is making a statement and demanding attention and is distracting to the people in class.”

NKNK on Sep 16, 2012 at 20:13:50

“Excuse me, how can you claim that a mother is minimizing the importance of feeding her child? How can you claim that breastfeeding is *not* a routine, given that it must be done sometimes every two hours for the smallest infants? Nobody said that nursing is glorious, nor that everyone is happy to watch. It's anything but glorious, it's stuff that a mother does many times a day, any way she can manage; if there are people around, well then, she still must feed her child. Finally, I still don't see how scratching one's balls can be compared to nursing in any way. Of course it would have been better if this infant was not in class, but if the woman was unable to secure any childcare, and if she simply tried to calm a fussing child by briefly breastfeeding, then why do you think that she thought that everyone should be delighted to watch? It seems that she was simply trying to manage all her responsibility, and some things slipped. Yeah, that really compares with ball-scratching.”

“As a former teacher, if I had a student being disruptive and interfering with the other students' ability to learn, I would ask them to leave. If they choose to sit quietly and tweet and not learn, they're just wasting their money. If the instructor is disruptive it impedes the learning of the entire class. I have no problem with women nursing in public places, but it's egocentric to do it in front of a class. Of course that interfered with the mission of the class as everyone would be distracted by her breastfeeding and not paying attention to what she was saying. It's naive to think otherwise. If I had a male professor scratching his balls while he was teaching, that would be a distraction too, no matter how natural it might be.”

NKNK on Sep 13, 2012 at 17:00:25

“Are you seriously comparing feeding a child to scratching one's balls??? Are you seriously saying that feeding a child is egocentric??? On the surface, your post sounds reasonable, but things like these reveal a serious bias.”
