“IUD is a great way to prevent pregnancy when it does NOT contain artificial hormones. This may not be news. What is news is progestin's direct link to breast cancer. Birth control pills and HRT also have progestin the artificial hormone which is very different from progesterone. The research is definitive proof. Check for yourself. http://tinyurl.com/csvgfvq

An IUD without progestin is very safe and 10 or more different varieties are very popular throughout Europe. Those IUD's with progestin carry the same cancer risks as birth control pills and HRT.”

“Using the human placenta for health has tremendous value in the East and been used for generations. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses human placenta with other blood building Chinese herbs to build Qi and blood. Cooking a placenta is not really all that different than cooking a cows liver or tongue. All are organs that have been eaten throughout time. New moms need all the help they can get to recuperate from childbirth and when done properly, encapsulating a placenta is a safe and highly effective method to restore lost nutrients. I use iSleep Herb Pack for an herbal night cap because the herbs have been used for centuries safely and effectively. The herbs are covered by national health insurance if you live in Germany, Japan, China or Taiwan and Canada. Hopefully medicare and other insurance programs will one day figure out that herbs like ziziphus are a safe and effective solution for insomnia.”

“Have to agree with Krocklin comment, easier to dispense the advice than to make it work. If the advice worked, those statistics of 40% of us are insomniacs would be false. I default to CAM for nearly everything. But I guarantee its not because my "regular" doctor is a valuable resource in alternative therapies. 99% of the time they have no idea about the CAM therapy I'm inquiring about. Cannabis may work for some but I prefer Traditional Chinese Herbs. The history of use is indisputable. The herbal formulations wouldn't still be in use, over 2000 years later, if they didn't work. iSleep Herb Pack made from Chinese herbs is my go to, must have when my head won't stop and the meditation thing is just not working for me, essential sleep aid.”

There is even a placenta cookbook now available. Who knew? http://www.pacherbs.com/2011/09/07/placenta-cookbook-now-available-really/

“If you had read the article you would know that was the title of the New York Magazine article and it is not at all about a placenta cookbook, it is about the options for placentas including encapsulation or the choice to use it as food and including it in smoothies. The title of the article is misleading and many bloggers unfortunately took it at name value and have declared that it is literally about a placenta cookbook, which it isn't.”

HRT and Breast Cancer: A Brief Primer

Teens Use Birth Control -- But Not to Prevent Pregnancy

Commented Jan 9, 2012 at 00:13:08 in Healthy Living

“Thanks, I ask the same questions. Seems our societies acceptance and trust in the MD trumps all. Some doctors I have personally spoken with say their patients come in asking for the pill and anything they say is not going to persuade them differently. Unfortunately, often doctors don't have enough time to educate their patients but their nurse practitioners do. Some are afraid to mention any side-effects. I'm not sure if they are concerned about being held responsible if some girl has a stroke. Kind of understandable considering how expensive malpractice insurance is .Sad but true. I encountered one nurse who got very irritable when I brought up the subject and wouldn't discuss it with me and my daughter. Needless to say, we ended our relationship with that doctors office.”

Laura Wershler on Jan 30, 2012 at 17:07:28

“The reality is teenage girls are not choosing the pill as much as their doctors and mothers are choosing the pill for them. My major concern about putting adolescents on the pill to manage menstrual problems is that this interrupts the maturation of their reproductive systems. Excessive pain, heavy bleeding, ovarian cysts, irregular cycles, and not ovulating consistently are all signs of the hormonal imbalances that often accompany this maturation process. There are effective treatments to these problems that do not involve taking birth control pills.

I recommend, as a primary source for information about menstrual cycles, the website of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research, whose scientific director is an endocrinologist with 40+ years clinical and research experience in the area. www.cemcor.ubc.ca Far better to help adolescents achieve healthy, ovulatory menstruation, than to have them take hormonal contraception, which does not regulate cycles, but overrides them, shutting down ovulation. Somewhere down the road, if a woman wants to have a child, her body has to complete the maturation process. To preserve women's health and well-being, this process should happen during adolescence and teenage hood.”
