Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 'More Whites Believe In Ghosts Than Believe In Racism'

“One of the sweetest people i know, a grad student and a favorite protege, was returning home to Chicago from a small white town in Wisconsin during the spring break. It's slight but these things tend to build up on one and actually illustrate the plight of our racism. As she got on the large bus full of other students, white, and like her returning home, she found no one willing to remove sparse items that were taking up empty seats so she could sit. The racism was palpable to this young black woman. It unfairly gives her yet another responsibility as she evolves into her professional life. It's a heavy chore and silently weighs too heavily on blacks. The responsibility of changing racist attitudes must be shared by all so as not to entrap and close the young minds of our blossoming youth. That responsibility must most strongly come from the top so that ongoing entrenched policies of institutionalized racism can be doused with flames of people getting along together, allowing a young black woman a seat, today, on a bus.”

“I always put something next to me when traveling...I enjoy the extra room. I leave it up to a person seeking a seat (unless elderly or pregnant) to ask me if someone is sitting there, which I will happily do for anyone, regardless of race”

“Jones is point on. He's saying this event calls for a wider and deeper dialogue. One that breaks into the kernels of the real estate and banking empires of impractical and unfair lending terms for blacks and the poor, producing egregious profits that sustain racism and perpetuate the Sterling business model as the accepted, praiseworthy, award-winning standard. Will we ever have this discussion? No. In every instance, viz the NAACP, money triumphs racism. This will be the responsibility of enlightened and independent black and white entrepreneurs who dare join together and build for the expressed purpose of ending discrimination.”

“Funny how some of the Ukrainian Slavs forget how Stalin decimated millions of the Ukrainians under his lieutenant Khrushchev in the Great Famine during the 1930s. He took their wheat and sold it to the West. But then we must distinguish between the Russian Ukrainians who were moved into the Ukraine and the nativists who apparently are always losing.”

“It would be just as interesting to portray the five or ten most racist presidents and the five or ten - we go by numbered lists these days - who though racist, decided to use their symbol and power to strike against racism. I read recently the wife of an unremarkable president - I forget who, there were so many, who flip the boards and invited a leading color lady to lunch. The first Roosevelt invited Booker T to a Washington lunch, a symbolism so powerful that it wound up getting the black leader a personalized beating while returning home on the trains.”

“Excellent take on Aristotle. But I would go on to say that anti-black racists are stupid with illogical beliefs. Those beliefs are based on media projections. Our attitudes for the most part are dictated by news censured to highlight and sensationalize black crime instead of black accomplishments. Hence we easily accept the racism of construction unions, for example. Go to any major construction site and you will see my primary example of white crime.”

“One overlooked poiint about Victor Frankle was that he was an "existential" psychotherapist. This was important in that day and age of the 1950s when a serious one had to define their being against the atomic bomb that could wipe that being out in a second, or against the dominant anti-black racism at the time that also threatened to wipe out or reduce my human being. This existentialism had been essential to my growing up, reading it in Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison and then again in college via Frankl. It enabled me to give a resounding "no" to the sub-existing pattern the West had made for me.I am sorry that this writer here does not know of this essential tradition as reflected through Frankl.”

“Some people are necessary to your life. I remember the aurora that Baraka bathed my life with. I felt special. I felt like I was a poet and an artist and have never stopped feeling that way since he entered. "I am inside someone who hates me," he wrote, or (paraphrase) "like a yellow mist," the fog choked the town. His life shifts, his intellectual and creative energy have remained a reflection of my world and a way of staying above and making art out of hate and discord.

“I think this is a way of life now and that such habits escalate as approved and acceptable social styles. Those who don't have smart phones and can't afford the contracts will want them more and major vendors will come up with no-contract deals with lots of other hidden fees to maintain the profit. Also the phones are quite convenient and will serve more as mini-computers.”

“What's interesting about this article is that in a world with unequal systems of wealth distribution, there will always be an underground economy. It would be a mistake to characterize such an economy as a mainstay of the poor, it belongs also to the middle- and upper-classes who recently preyed on the poor with the speculative and profitable mortgage schemes. World economies must carefully prop up banking systems to try to relieve still deeply rooted mortgage debt - the US Fed has not stop printing out extra recovery money. Losses for the poor in the underground economy usually mean violent takeaways of life. I do find the move from cocaine to phones, the article's point, hard to believe and suspect.”

“This is actually an interesting and substantial position that can lead to some powerful philosophical views on mind and body and religion. The fact that a quantum is a wave but when observed turns into a particle implies certain views about consciousness and reality. One position that becomes clear is that science cannot do religion. A quantum-black hole explanation of the origin of the universe necessarily leads to an infinite regression and cannot account for spirituality. Consciousness becomes a questionable field but inevitably must be left alone. An excellent series of videos on Youtube: Holographic Universe Workshop, see parts 1-3.”

“The display does say important things about the ways we see in our world. Note how natural exposed women's breasts are accepted in parts of Africa. Perhaps there is a note here that our view of what is attractive is awfully skewed away from the natural shape and order of things. I cannot wear a dirty, torn t shirt in my profile as I am tending to do, why not? I am sexually stimulated by covered, hidden breasts to my own chagrin when communicating with a woman. The point is that we can escape such thought escalations. I think we need to. Or else their immediate awareness becomes art.”
