Karla Begley Receives Hateful Letter About Her Autistic Son

Karla Begley Receives Hateful Letter About Her Autistic Son

Commented Aug 20, 2013 at 02:33:24 in Canada Living

“I defend an individual's right to freedom of speech -- yes, even the right to pen cruel words to a sane adult. Remember the old sticks and stones may break my bones...still rings true. If this person should ever act upon her beliefs with threats or physical violence, she can rightfully be charged. Also think of the day when "you" may wish to cry out against what you perceive as a true injustice. One can and should make allowances to a considerable degree but mutual respect and thoughtfulness is something that the parent must also not abandon just because he/she has an autistic child. It is precisely the child's future freedom and safety that we should be concerned about -- I would not wish for the tables to be turned upon him or any of us someday through some bitterly blind piece of "hate" legislation - what we should be fighting for is greater individual freedom and tolerance, not less -- we need more public forums, discussions, and debate, with regard to autism. We can build a more understanding world when we focus our love and attention upon caring for "all" of God's children. We cannot accomplish this with a narrow and prejudiced view or barbaric witch hunt; we can never stand for truth or justice with our own inversive brand of ignorance, and intolerance. If we attack the "hater" with the same measure of mean-spiritedness, the sand will be thrown back in our faces, as with all hypocrites.”

“Section 2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Canada states that "Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: ... freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication," but even that has limits as codified in the Criminal Code of Canada. I'm no lawyer, I freely admit that, but this could fall under Sections 318 (a bit of a stretch), or 319 and 320 (possible but unlikely) of the Criminal Code of Canada, or Section 264 (Criminal Harassment).”

“So true. Beneath the surface, race is not the real issue at all. The level of consciousness will be raised when freedom of thought and critical thinking are excercised fully again. In order for that to happen, there has to be a trigger that seriously jolts the living daylights out of the robots. It is called reality but no one yet knows what hue or bent it will take when it finally does arrive on the scene. Peace”

“The money is crappy. It doesn't feel natural, sticks together , and slips out of your pockets unless they are very deep. A few bank tellers have told me that they are not too crazy about them. We are ruled by an oligarch --- public opinion vanished decades ago along with the power of the public vote. Neither one of them matters much when the truth has been hi-jacked. It seems that a lot of people now prefer the sham of the status quo --- mediocrity prevails until the bottom falls out.”

“It seems like there is absolutely no one out there who is really helping or looking after these people in a meaningful way. Why? Our fundamental societal values must shift into a far more caring mode or it will become progressively worse. Where are all of our humanitarian crusaders nowadays? These most recent crimes by very disturbed young men could have been prevented. It is time for the people to demand action -- a mental health outreach and residential program that would be easily accessible to troubled individuals with or without a diagnosis) that could be publicly and privately funded -- a universal option that would be there to help those in dire distress or need of treatment. We need to develop appropriate life lines and effective long-term treatment plans for these people. It only requires a unified national will and committment to doing what is right. Have the citizens ceased to believe or even care what happens on a deeper level? These violent acts will continue as long as we pretend that we it does not involve us per se --a s long as we deny any share of the burden or responsibility as compassionate and civilized fellow-beings within society. We can allow ourselves to become so desensitized that we reject our common humanity. If this is what we the people want, then we are doomed to a future much worst than those "dark satanic mills" -- we will have returned to another Dark Age.”

LindaWarnke on Aug 5, 2012 at 02:18:40

“Agreed. And does anyone else see the peculiarity of using all this effort and money to 'make' him sane enough for trial, but not wanting to spend any more on mental health care that could have prevented this in the first place?”

“Amnesia? Not sure. Mental illness? It is blatently obvious...he should be put on the right medication and placed in an institution. He should not be put to death or in prison if he is sick. I would just like to know how it all came to pass. There is much to learn from this tragedy -- this is a very young man at a vulnerable age who lost it all. We have to reverse the devolution of society that has been taking place over the past several decades or we are all facing some very dark days ahead.Younger men in America seem to be highly susceptible to committing these heinous acts. Why?”

Susan Shaffer on Jul 28, 2012 at 19:56:12

“Why? Get a load of the comments. Americans are more violent and do seem to tend to more violence. Some of the comments make me think the posters have given up knitting to be able to post on the subject.

It is clear that one cannot rely upon the constant revisionism of government, university officials, or the media. If the mental health safety net failed in this case, the public has a right to know. “So sad that this young man fell between the cracks for all concerned. We are all devastated. This was a senseless tragedy that was preventable -- there is a crisis in the field of mental illness and yet, the cut-backs continue without remorse. . When the health of our most vulnerable citizens ceases to be a priority, it all just becomes a vicious cycle. We are seeing it happen now on so many levels. (political, banking, environment, etc) Time for a sea-change.”

“How was it preventable? He didn't show any of the signs of impending disaster. He dropped out of the doctoral program but lots of people do that. Don't ask the rest of us to intervene in every situation. He did not "fall through the cracks." He deliberately and with meticulous planning decided to do something spectacular. This is not necessarily a sign of mental illness. Many of the guards at Auschwitz were very well adjusted to the lives they chose.”

“This has nothing to do with the fight for heathcare. Do your homework before you comment. His family is well to do and he was an enrolled college student. This has nothing to do with cutbacks. His family could afford the best medical care possible they are" middle class" He was being evicted from his apartment. Guess the parents quit enabling him and his girlfriend broke up with him. So is that a reason to go kill innocent people ? I think not. He is a sociapath. Look it up. Get your facts straight.”

“This is not like Brevick in Norway. We need to know more but it seems fairly obvious that there was a mental break -- the slide probably began a few years back and my guess is that there was little or no intervention. It could be paranoid schizophrenia as someone already mentioned here. I think that by the time he was in the preliminary stages of planning this senseless horror, the line between fantasy and reality---good and evil --- life and death --- had become invisible ---- the world outside -- meaningless and irrelevant. Could it be that his mind became corrupted and entangled in the prison of his own convoluted thoughts and emotions? His heart and soul set adrift upon a dead sea -- lost -- without direction or control? Whatever the case, all rational and spiritual truth seems to have vanished within his isolated realm. He may have slipped in and out of consciousness at certain times but there is no doubt in my mind that this young man was delusional or deranged and still is.”

“Putting this young man to death will make us "worse" than he ever was. Here you have a very sick young man who may or may not be classified by our courts as "legally" insane. The sanity of our whole society should be on trial here but it is not -- our civilization truly hangs in the balance but all we want is a quick fix -- the death penalty simplifies but does not solve -- anything -- except our lust for vengeance. Justice has little to do with it. We can condemn and execute the one that finally pulled the trigger but in a culture that glorifies and condones violence, it is always a matter of time before we have more blood on our hands.”

“There are many natural born citizens in Canada who would recognize this monument though. However, we have just as many uneducated native and/or foreign-born who are not only ignorant but disinterested in the huge sacrifices that were made by our soldiers in The Great War (as shown here at the Vimy Monument) many of our ancestors also fought courageously in the War of 1812, the Boer War, World War II, etc. We need to bring history back into the classroom -- The younger generations deserve to know and understand the high ideals that this nation once honored and upheld---we can learn to understand the past not only through its achievements but also its failures.

Humanity must reawaken before it has lost all consciousness. Once we have forfeited the heart and soul of a higher Truth...the moral imperative that binds us together as one, we have lost the very essence of our being.”

BUT the Vimy monument is something that I have never seen in my life before I saw this, I knew such a thing existed but not what it looks like.
