This reminds me of when Obama said people were bitter during the presidential campaign, and the wingnuts got angry over that, saying he was putting down the American people. Why can't someone say something negative, but truthful, about the country? Is this nation of pantywaist pollyannas living in denial? Even the people he was referring to agreed with him, because they understood what he was saying, as opposed to what Fox and Rush and other right-wing talking heads wanted us to believe about what he was saying.
It's also no different than the reaction to the things Reverend Wright said in criticism of the historical injustices perpetrated by our country, or AG Holder's remark that we are a "nation of cowards" for our resistance to having a honest dialogue about race.
As far as I'm concerned, the "My country right or wrong ..." mantra generally expressed by those on the right is detrimental to the evolution of our democracy. Virtually every historical or otherwise significant advancement that we've made as a nation has been through our response to what we've done wrong. In other words, we cannot fix what we will not face. Yet, many Americans seem determined not to face the challenges that are keeping us stuck in the status quo, and I think it's because they fear seeing something in themselves that is reflected in the faults of our country.”
