“"We cannot talk of Dr. Du Bois without recognizing that he was a radical all of his life. Some people would like to ignore the fact that he was a Communist in his later years. It is worth noting that Abraham Lincoln warmly welcomed the support of Karl Marx during the Civil War and corresponded with him freely. In contemporary life the English speaking world has no difficulty with the fact that Sean O'Casey was a literary giant of the twentieth century and a Communist or that Pablo Neruda is generally considered the greatest living poet though he also served in the Chilean Senate as a Communist. It is time to cease muting the fact that Dr. Du Bois was a genius and chose to be a Communist. Our irrational obsessive anti-communism has led us into too many quagmires to be retained as if it were a mode of scientific thinking."

“Excellent quote. MLK was America's first Marxist heroine martyr. He and Mandela will forever be revered as giants among men.”
“You make neoliberalism sound like something good. Are you crazy? Mandela was a brilliant student of politics and history, and knew the fundamentals of his peoples' struggle well enough to understand the role of capitalism in that struggle. What exactly are you trying to say.... that neoliberalism trumps Marxism?”
“The birds are trying to groom them, not annoy them. Cats are just brats.”

“That was my original take but, my dad had a macaw named Major when he was little who snapped off about five inches of my dad's cats's tail. I do assume the cat foolishly POd the bird. They renamed the cat "Shorty."”
“This tactic has been used by spies going back hundreds of years, particularly to blackmail important people who were LGBT and in the closet, to keep silent about their homosexuality in exchange for information.
And it was used in the US against domestic political opponents (namely Communists) until the 1960's, until Cointelpro decided the counter-culture made it ineffective and obsolete for dealing with on a new generation of radicals.
So if this doesn't get used as much on American dissidents, it isn't because we can trust "officials to know the difference" .. Snowden showed us that is not true. Thank Andy Warhol and Miley Cyrus instead.”
“Its unfortunate that due to the lack of reporting or popular interest in the subject, most Americans aren't aware of our "Pivot to Asia" over the last few years, how it has provoked regional tensions and that the US and China have been gearing up for WWIII.”

“This is true. But the lack of reporting is one sided. I've been reading about it for a while. You will not find updates on most liberal leaning websites”

“if only Microsoft didn't have to pay taxes, they could spend that money on building better products, at lower prices!”

“And I guess you can afford your own army and border patrol, you can build bridges and roads to Microsoft offices... police the area around their executive homes... all that you can do without those pesky taxes, and educate the children... start with your own education.”
“Max might be one of the lucky ones who starts talking as he gets older .. but the only way that is going to happen is if parents stop expecting miracles, accept that he has a disorder which makes him non-verbal, and they and educators work with him one step at a time. Teach him to say "Ma" and then "Max" and then other basic one-syllable words, then move up to the hard stuff ... if you insist that he pronounce 4 syllables at once he is just going to get stressed out and never learn.
Usually the solution is just to carry around some kind of laminated ID with their name and address and they are taught to show this to people who ask their name; it isn't a great solution but it's better than nothing.
Special ed programs are badly underfunded but they should be looking into alternative communication methods, like sign language, or an assisted communication device, even an iPad. Those approaches can build language skills, and basic mental associations of sounds with ideas, that might help Max speak one day.
Even so, he might not be ready to speak for years, if at all, so speaking itself should not be the goal. The goal should be to teach Max to functionally communicate in the way that's best for him. If he starts speaking, that's great, but he might not; in these early years it's crucial to work on basic language skills in any way possible.”

“All you say is true. Friend has a non-verbal autistic child who communicates well and his frustration level is much less - which means he can engage a great deal more. His Mom uses American Sign Language with him. She's getting grief from the early intervention program for using it because "he isn't deaf". Our district will support students who are fluent in ASL, but says it has no responsibility to teach ASL to deaf children. They do teach ASL in high school as a foreign language.”
“A record number of immigrants deported, our civil liberties undermined to historic lows, social inequality wider than ever and only getting worse. GOP and banks should give him a medal for using his progressive credentials and popular support to do what they only dreamed about under Bush.”
“Syria, really? Whoever put Syria on there at Wall Street 24/7 must have a bone to pick or be ignorant/lazy. What are those figures based on and does the workforce figure include areas taken over by the Islamist rebels where women are forbidden to work?
South Yemen used to be a beacon of women's rights when they had a secular government. Political Islam pushed back all those gains in the 1990's. Same happened in Afghanistan in the 90's and it is going to happen in Syria if we keep funding and arming the most "moderate" jihadists we can find and letting our allies fund and arm whoever they want.”
