The Secret To Nutrition Is No Secret

“No secret at all, just the willingness to actually follow our common sense:

"This just in from the world of intelligence called “common sense”: what you eat really, really matters for how healthy and happy you will be. We make such a mystery of eating well and we dis-empower ourselves by thinking it complicated – leaving it to “experts” with degrees in excess-information. When, really, it’s a pretty simple affair."

“Sticking with it sure is key... Why is that we consistently forego lifestyle habits that we know, that we FEEL, make us healthier and happier? What about our human mechanism is so keen to self-sabotage?

These questions and more will be addressed in this December's yogic-weight-loss "Gut Busters Boot Camp!" in Thailand so that we can lose weight, healthily and safely, and actually (this time) maintain our natural stature. Featuring:

1. Physical practices of warrior yoga and other rigorous exercises (appropriate for all)
2. Ayurvedic wisdom on natural eating, raising digestive fire and daily routines that will keep you well nourished and simultaneously fit.
3. Sauhu - mental health services through the lens of natural wisdom that will address the "reasons" and compulsions that have compelled you to over-eat and/or carry unnatural weight.

Why The Color Red Makes Us Mad

Why The Color Red Makes Us Mad

Commented Sep 17, 2011 at 22:49:22 in Healthy Living

“I am most interested in the statement: "Shortcomings/next steps:
Red seems to initiate a surge of energy".

For the 1 in 10,000 people that might know what I am talking about... this study is revealing something primal about why deity yoga visualizations (from esoteric yoga practices) work. What is missing here is the possibility of revealing the anger-aggression energy of red more virtuous and essential base of pure discriminating wisdom, clarity, luminosity, dynamism and bliss.

It would be cool if scientists ever were open-minded enough to actually take a look at the truly effective liberation technologies of inner-alchemical yoga practices. For now, the religion of science has relegated this stuff to "hocus-pocus" or, those that do give it come credence consider it mere mental trickery that produces some desired results. Little to they know of the possibility of actual cellular tranformation and en-LIGHT-enment.

Cheers.

6 Tips For When Meditation Gets Rocky

6 Tips For When Meditation Gets Rocky

Commented Sep 17, 2011 at 22:36:43 in Healthy Living

“Most people have disconnected meditation practice from the body-practices that have always gone with it, hand in hand. Without the proper diet, routine, exercise (yoga, tai-chi, etc.) it is nearly impossible to "meditate." Our minds are simply to busy. How could they be otherwise with our constant enmeshment in over-stimulating environments.

This is problem because meditation is really indispensable for a fully satisfying experience of life. Therefore, we must practice where we are at and work our situation at the level of body. Then, when our body is balanced meditation will come naturally and will be a source of great wisdom and peace.

There are many means to achieving this balance. Many of the world's meditation traditions do so through the application of the "5 Elements" Views and Methods. Here's an introduction: http://www.energyofmindtherapy.com/body-mind-connection/health-and-happiness-harmonizing-the-five-elements-2/.

“Diet, body-practices, and all the rest, are certainly of value, but they are often cultural specific. Unless you are going to throw yourself into the culture from which they sprang (which may no longer exist in the modern world outside of monasteries and retreats, if even there), you may find that the stress and strain gained from trying to hold to practices from some other culture and time while living in the modern world overwhelms any benefit you might gain from them.

My teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, advised that "one should practice the religion that one learned at your mother's knee," and gave equally practical guidelines for optional asana and pranayama practices. The old Zen adage, "meditate and chop wood," that is, mediate and then lead a normal, reasonably healthy life (where "healthy" includes mind, body and spirit), is sufficient to bring one to enlightenment, according to MMY.”

5 Nutrition Tips To Break Through A Plateau

Commented Sep 13, 2011 at 22:45:25 in Healthy Living

“It is kind of strange that we have become so disconnected from our innate wisdom that we require "experts" to tell us how to eat food. This stuff is programmed deeply into our being. But, we have become such over-thinkers that we confuse ourselves and lose trust in our instincts. Having been stuck in our heads for long enough, we actually have created enough problems for ourselves (in our food supply, in our physical and mental health, in our environment, etc) that we actually do need some "expert" guidance. But, it doesn't need to come from the men in labs with high degrees. It needs to come from a bit of common sense: Try this article for starters: "Common Sense: Eating for Health and Happiness." http://bit.ly/eU78Ey

I hope the profundity of this perspective is not lost on the reader due to the contents' simplicity.

“And, I agree with the comment below from "fordgarye." The #1 way to have good digestion is to follow this principle (which seems obvious, but how many of us do it?): Eat when you are hungry and only when you are hungry. Drink when you are thirsty and only when you are thirsty. Don't eat when you are thirsty. Don't drink when you are hungry.

“Well, listen: I wasn't all that thirsty when I woke up this morning. But, I also knew that it was set to be over 100 degrees, and I planned on doing a 5 mile trail run in the Hollywood hills -- so I drank extra water. If I had not properly hydrated beforehand, I wouldn't have made it through the first mile.

My point is: as an athlete (and this article is about athletes hydrating) if you don't do a little planning beforehand with your hydration, you will soon find yourself dehydrated. And, the minute you start feeling thirsty while exercising, its a bit too late to properly hydrate yourself.”

“Drinking water all throughout the day is not a good practice. Water, like food, needs to be digested in order to hydrate us. Even though it feels like nothing, water taxes our digestive system. It is most advised to take water as meals, in large amounts, in between food meals. Then, also sip small amounts of water between bites of food in order to create a "stew" in the stomach, which is easier to digest than straight solids. These suggestions and more are elaborated in the following article, regarding keys to good digestion from the perspective of natural wisdom: http://bit.ly/lS11ez

Yoga And PTSD: One Vet's Story

Commented Sep 5, 2011 at 23:33:47 in Healthy Living

“Great stuff... I am so glad to see it... For a further look into a view on how yoga can really access deep tension/trauma, please read the following: http://www.energyofmindtherapy.com/retreats/march2012/

Please also disregard what might seem like a shameless plug for this retreat. It is the content of information in the description that I wish to share. Experiences of suffering truly become encoded in our body and generate our perceived experience of life. Talk and understanding can not be but a first step to relieve these patterns. We must access the energy on a deeper level to effect real change. This is also explained in the article, "Why Psycotherapy Doesn't Work", which can be read here: http://bit.ly/fTtfg2.

I hope this information is useful for you. I am glad to see the truly powerful healing effects of yoga being documented in this forum.

What's True, and Not, About Stress (Part 3)

Commented Aug 29, 2011 at 22:57:05 in Healthy Living

“Mr. Chopra speaks eloquently of vasanas (tensions/impressions made from past activities of body, mind and energy - karmas). What do we do when these vasanas become encoded in our very DNA, and form our perception of reality to the point where we can't see an alternative. Well, if we sense that there is something more, something deeper than these accumulated habits and that our perception of reality is limited, then we can employ methods to actually unwind these tensions and reveal that something more. Understanding is a good first step, but it will not accomplish real change.

These vasanas tend to fall into 6 categories, known as the "Six Realms" or the "Six Ways We Suffer." And there are specific, tried-and-true, methods designed to access these tensions and reveal their inherently virtuous base... Read more here: http://bit.ly/p8uTkT.

How To Beat Negative Thoughts

Commented Aug 29, 2011 at 22:45:08 in Healthy Living

“You can't, utimately, get more than a temporary fix (which can be very welcomed at times, I know:)) from solving a problem from the level where it is at. In other words, you can't "beat negative thoughts" with other thoughts. Understanding "why?" won't help either. Trying to find relief from our busy minds (which can drive us mad!) by employing the mind further is the dog chasing its tail.

But, what do to then? Most of the "experts" have no idea that there is something "beyond" the mind that can do the trick. And, those that do make these claims are often impractical, arrogant new-age flakes. But, there ARE legitimate means to discovering something beyond the mind that can, by its very nature, help us to relax our crazy thoughts and feelings.

You guessed it, this is heading towards a shameless plug... but, what can I say: I am just trying to help. Check out: "Why Psychotherapy Doesn't Really Work" here: http://bit.ly/fTtfg2. Why Spirituality Needs Psychology

Why Spirituality Needs Psychology

Commented Aug 14, 2011 at 21:44:34 in Healthy Living

“(continued from previous comment)

We highly recommend/require that students take care of their psychological needs FIRST. To this end I disagree with a slight implication I catch in Mariana's article: that this work must be done in a shrinks office or in a different "line" of work from spiritual practice. The foundational practices of many practice-based spiritual traditions can take care of this stage of development. The problem is that modern aspirants tend to want to skip over the "beginner" stuff or not do it long enough to get the real results.

Also, there are extant spiritual traditions, refined over millennia, with emerging wings that do psychological work in way that is non-denominational, modernly relevant and still in line with the spiritual view/practice.

Again, I must warn: please be wary of those who make this latter claim and do not come directly from authentic lineages that have been tried and true for thousands of years. It is all to easy, with a bit of charisma and a touch of insight, to look an awful lot like the real thing. It takes only two years to get a Masters degree in spiritual psychology. Trust me - this piece of paper on the wall, no matter how nice it's frame, is not worthy of re-assuring clients that they are in the hands of someone who can guide them in matters of this depth.
