U.S. Signals Iraq's Maliki Should Go: WSJ

Commented Jun 19, 2014 at 20:11:00 in Politics

“Guarantee that significant parts of that electric car are made from oil (plastics, for one) or use huge amounts of oil for their manufacture or transportation. We will stop using (and find an affordable replacement for) oil when the last drop of it is pumped from the ground or squeezed from a piece of sandstone. Then, and no sooner.”

U.S. Signals Iraq's Maliki Should Go: WSJ

Commented Jun 19, 2014 at 20:08:06 in Politics

“You are relating two un-related topics in energy - yes, most of our oil does come from North America, because it involves the lowest transportation costs. But that is a separate issue from the price of oil. There is generally one global price for oil when it is sold on the open market. If there are supply problems anywhere, the price goes up everywhere. It's (mostly) supply and demand - if the supply decreases, demand increases. So people that were buying it from Iraq now have to buy elsewhere, and compete with everyone that was already buying it from those sources. Yes, yes, speculators can have an effect on the cost too, but generally, that's why a problem anywhere in the world causes prices to go up everywhere.”

Patricia013 on Jun 20, 2014 at 12:20:43

“Haven't we heard over and over again that we must drill to become independent. Now, all of a sudden the price of our oil is dependent on whatever goes wrong anywhere in the world? Poppycock! Its one baloney sandwich after another! :-(”

“Actually, lived in Pleasanton, CA for 12 years. I still love to visit Yosemite and climb Half Dome every few years. But Texas is a GREAT place to live. No income tax (although somewhat high property taxes), and I would never want to live anywhere else. We can buy 2400 sq ft houses on nearly an acre for $200k. They would be easily a million $$$ in California.”

Llandudno on May 2, 2014 at 00:55:45

“yeah, i have no idea why anybody would want a 2500 sq ft mcmansion and a 1 acre yard. what do you do with the lawn? its just a huge expanse of grass that you have to mow every week. Nobody does anything useful with it, like grow veg or have fruit trees.

that lifestyle honestly seems really trashy, and common to me. it's just people pretending to be middle class, to impress people they can't stand. i'll pass. I'd rather pay 800K for a small house here in California.”

Testing welfare and unemployment recipients is because people on government assistance are supposed to need the money for living and childcare expenses, not so they can continue the habits that contribute to their need for assistance.”

“Well, that and health insurance costs that have doubled in the past 3 years. In 2011, mine was 3% of my salary. 2 months after ACA was signed, it went to 4%. Last year it was 5%. Now it is 7.5%. HR is telling us they expect it to hit the max of 9% by next year. Of course, then I'm sure congress will just up the cap. Oh - and that's just for MY policy. Adding kids would cost another $800 per month.

And yes, I have looked at the ACA website - these are less than it would cost since my employer pays a good portion of my insurance.”

lhoffman5 on Mar 22, 2014 at 01:55:45

“Depends on which state you live in: Many States controlled by Republicans are allowing Insurance Companies to raise their rates (in advance of A C A caps) to what ever they please. While other States have said NO to drastic rate increases. According to something I read about 4 months ago ( can't remember where) overall insurance rates and medical expenses have DROPPED Nationwide for the last two years, to the LOWEST level in decades!”

CleverMoniker on Mar 21, 2014 at 11:27:13

nelo on Mar 21, 2014 at 11:25:09

“What are you saying? Health insurance costs through your employer have gone up because of ACA -- they were not rising at all before then? And then the policies available through ACA are cheaper but because your employer pays a good portion of your insurance you can get a better deal through your employer? What are you complaining about? What would you do if your employer didn't contribute and what do you think should happen to all those people whose employers don't provide insurance?”

“That was a rhetorical question. I understand how the system is believed to function. The difference is that I don't believe that those who say they know everything actually do. And yes, it does work in balances. As the CO2 in the atmosphere increases, something will balance it out. Or we will adapt to handle the new climate. If you want a constant temperature, move to Hawaii or the Caribbean.”

“Um... no you don't. That's not how air conditioners work. If you turn your AC to 50 and measure the leaving condenser air, it will be the EXACT same temperature if you set it to 40 or 30 or however low your thermostat can go (normally 50, BTW). Most air conditioners are either on or off, the thermostat controls only how often they cycle on and off.”

“Interesting that in 1896 there were only ~1.5 billion people in the world, none of which drove cars or flew jets. We now have 4x as many people, with far more burning fuel, and we only had a 45% increase in CO2? Hmmm. I wonder where all of it's going?”

solar 2011 on Jan 7, 2014 at 05:23:35

“Ever heard of the Carbon cycle? Nature works in balances, every day carbon gets released into the atmosphere by different sources and some is removed by various mechanisms. However that buffering capacity is not unlimited and when more carbon starts being released than what nature can capture back you start to increase the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. This is really high school chemistry material (it was for me) or at most organic chemistry 101 material, so I am amazed that so many people seem to be clueless about this.”

“No we don't. Solar doesn't break even for 20 or 30 years. Same goes for wind. As soon as they have a 3-5 year payback, I'll have solar panels on my roof and a turbine in my back yard. But none of those "proven technologies" could be made without oil. Oil is used either extensively in the products themselves (plastics), in their production, or transporting them to market. (You don't see ANY major transportation systems that run without fossil fuels.)”
