“I wonder how much helium is used? There is a shortage of Helium gas in the world - I realize much is to be gained by the results and data obtained and improving astronaut safety.

“About 500kg. There's not a shortage of Helium, there's just an increased market, hence the increase in price. It is a finite resource, but there's a large amount remaining.

Nothing is to gained, apart from a record and fun story for Herr Baumgartner and increased sales of caffeinated soft drinks.

Issues of parachuting from the high stratosphere have long been settled by those handed the keys to U2s, SR71s, Canberras and their Soviet equivalents.”
