'The Sound Of Music Live' Isn't Without Flaws, But Carrie Underwood Was Entertaining (VIDEO)

'The Sound Of Music Live' Isn't Without Flaws, But Carrie Underwood Was Entertaining (VIDEO)

Commented Dec 7, 2013 at 09:45:47 in TV

“Miss Underwood’s voice, while probably good for the type of music she is known for, really did not fit “Sound of Music”. For me, her constant vocal vibrato became rather grating. Neither she nor the male lead had the vocal strength to carry this musical. It should be kept in mind that not all singers can sing every type of music. A rapper cannot compete with a well-trained opera tenor. That said, I applaud the effort and admire the courage that Miss Underwood displayed in tackling such a project.”

“Best meatloaf recipe:
Preheat oven to: 375°.

In a large bowl, combine:
1/3 cup plain dry breadcrumbs
1/3 cup bulgur wheat, coarse
3/4 cup low-fat milk
1/3 cup ketchup

Add in:
1 egg or equivalent egg substitute
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
1 lb. lean ground beef

Mix just until blended. Place into an 8” x 5” x 2” loaf pan that has been sprayed with Pam or equivalent.

Bake 1 hour or until inner temperature reaches at least 160°.

This makes a very moist, loose meatloaf.”

U.S. Test Scores Remain Stagnant While Other Countries See Rapid Rise

“My husband, who is from what some would call a third world country, attended school from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday. There were no school sponsored sports of any kind. His education allowed him to achieve professional success in this country. I educated our children at home, something I never intended to do when they were born, utilizing an academically strong, scientifically correct, and complete curriculum that I purchased. In the early grades, we would routinely finish a full day’s worth of classes before lunch. Even as we progressed, we were still able to devote time to music and extensive foreign travel. All graduated on time and were accepted into top universities (Ivy League).

In many places, sports are revered above academics and even the little academics that remain are watered down to pabulum. We give teachers neither the respect nor the pay they deserve so, in many cases, the best and brightest go into other careers. Some say “Teaching is a calling” – baloney – a nice sentiment, but teachers have bills to pay and children to raise just like the rest of us. A lot of money is thrown at some schools and a lot of money is wasted in administrative costs. Yes, we can afford expensive buildings and furniture, huge offices and conference rooms, and the latest technology for school administrators, but basic paper and pencils for the students are too expensive. And you should just forget about adequate”

“Your husband's third world country only provided that education for a very small percentage of the population. And it only tested that exclusive population as well. I feel sorry for him that his childhood was so intense and without play. He must have a wonderful sense of humor and be very well adjusted, socially. How perfect for all of you.”

“Many years ago, I went to the book store to buy an unabridged version of Oliver Twist. One of the sales associates told me that those were hard to find because all of the teachers were assigning abridged versions. At the same time, my daughter had a friend whose family had come to this country because the father had been transferred here for his job. In addition to her regular school work, her mother had her memorize 100 English words every night straight from the dictionary. When they transferred back to China a couple of years later, my daughter’s friend spoke perfect English. What a contrast.

In one other point, the teaching profession should be highly respected and highly paid. It is neither. Until it is, then we will continue to get what we pay for.”

“Long ago, my husband and I agreed that we would not purchase useless stuff for each other just because it is some holiday. We give thanks that we have each other and our family every day and buy things as needed. My children are grown, so I am off of that hook, thank goodness, and they prefer cash anyway so they can get what they actually need. Everyone else will get a small, hand-made gift (I love to crochet). If I have to purchase a gift for someone for whom such an item would not be appropriate, such as a work colleague, then I utilize the K.I.S.S. principle (keep it simple, silly) and don’t try to outspend the next person. Everything in moderation.”

“I could quote something about "When a few good men refuse to stand up and be heard . . ." but I wont for two reasons. One, the Teat party has already already bastardized this to suit their own ends, And two, people like yourself probably watched as the Jews were herded into cattle cars bound for the camps while they spoke no evil. In a democracy it is your express duty to speak up against perceived wrong and I would put the Tea types (as misguided as they are and as much as I disagree with them on almost all things) ahead of you as far as being good citizens.”

“Sometimes I think that John Boehner is a closet Democrat. The two recent attempts to get a Continuing Resolution that came out of the House were overloaded with poison pills that he had to know were beyond unacceptable to the Democrats. One version, in particular, was basically just a wish list of everything that the Republicans want. There was not even a pretense of trying to actually resolve anything. All of this leads me to think that his actions are aimed at embarrassing Republicans and getting them defeated in the next election. Maybe he is just trying to get the tea partiers kicked out so that his caucus won’t be so hard to handle. Or maybe he just gave up.”

“Fracking: 1-8 million gallons of water per site to which 40,000 gallons of chemicals, including lead, hydrochloric acid, methane, mercury, and formaldehyde, are added and then injected into a well. 30% to 50% of this is recovered and the rest is left in the ground. This horrific mixture is not biodegradable. What does not leach out to contaminate surrounding water wells and ground water just stays there – a potential hazard – forever – a monster under the bed of humanity.”

When are we going to see some bills aimed at creating jobs for the middle class so this economy can get back on its feet?”
