“A living wage is probably somewhere in the range of $10 - $15 per hour. If workers were paid a respectable wage, we taxpayers would save a bundle in money not required to subsidize their lives with welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and subsidized housing. It is my opinion that corporate CEOs, Wall St. analysts, too-big-to-fail bankers, stock brokers, etc. are grossly overpaid for "work" that is largely damaging to society and the economy as a whole (remember the crash of 2008?).”

“It should not be necessary to tip fast food workers -- there is no table service. They should receive a living wage for their work. Tipping by customers is just another form of corporate welfare to the employer (McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, etc) who escape the payroll tax contribution they should rightfully be paying on their workers' increased income.”

Debbie Kutzner on Dec 5, 2013 at 22:40:46

“Tipping should not be for any job, As the person took the job knowing what they have to do. A waitress carries a tray to your table and takes your order that is it, A mover moves stuff both knew what they were applying for and therefore should not be paid extra for it. Do you "tip" you doctor? A nurse for bringing you your meds? Do you "tip" the plumber for fixing the leak?

Also, JHKH you all spout the same words "living wage", What is a living wage?
Then after you figure that out, What do you pay those that do more or are more educated or work at more intense jobs? If you want to buy the $15 argument then I ask what do you pay a doctor, lawyer, cop, scientist?

Maybe instead of people crying about making min. wage they should reflect on their life and find out why they can not earn more. Good Enough Diplomas (GED) do not deserve $15 an hour for anything.”

People of Mr. McDermott's (clearly, ‘bigoted’), view bring those 'lotto' update commercials to mind...

Mr. McDermott SHOULD imagine himself, continuously, at the center of the auditorium crowd, (in 1 lotto commercial), who, upon hearing the new l-$$$/Mr. McDermott’s nonsensical ‘reasoning’, clear the hall in, like, 5 seconds!”

OldUncleTom on Dec 4, 2013 at 19:13:25

“I don't find the expansion of the "definition" of marriage to be the same thing as a redefinition. It did not redefine marriage to recognize the right of inter-racial couples to marry, though many employed the same tired arguments in opposition to that right as well.

It seems that "Christians" are more inclined to wave their Bibles than actually read and understand them.”

“Marriage is a social contract that precedes the birth of Judeo-Christian ideology. In mankind's history the definition of marriage has undergone many revisions. Some Judeo-Christian traditions have mandated polygamy. Polyandry has existed in some societies. Marriages were frequently arranged by parents to cement social or political bonds, so that neither husband nor wife/wives had a say in choosing their spouses. Betrothals (and marriage) of children was not uncommon. The "institution" of marriage is not an institution. It's a fluid, evolving arrangement for which the definition and parameters have been in a constant state of flux. McDermott is simply unable to cope with this inherent ambiguity.”

“I think Tirado's mistake was leaving the reader with the impression that her situation was currently as she described. I did not follow the apparent torrent of discourse about her teeth, so I don't know how valid it is to use as either proof of her veracity or proof of the lack of veracity. What completely turned me off was the follow-up to the first article headlined something to the effect of "The woman who accidentally explained poverty to the nation" and it was simply her referring to herself in the third person. That, coupled with the crowd funding appeal (even if she didn't originate the notion), made the two articles appear to be completely mercenary and a ploy to beg for money. I don't doubt that she experienced the series of events that she describes, but she is not unique. I've been there. Been poor, even briefly homeless. I also thought it suspicious that negative or skeptical comments like mine quickly disappeared from the thread, leaving only the rah-rah-give-her-money-you're-great comments behind. (My much more savvy son speculated that she was allowed to moderate and selectively delete undesirable comments herself.) I still wish her well. Income inequality is a serious social problem that needs to be addressed, and poverty can force people to make choices that do not benefit them in the long run. (But no matter how poor you are, smoking when you have children, or feeding them McDonalds is not a choice you ever have to make.)”

“I currently have health insurance (individual, which I pay for), but according to my insurer's information booklet, at my income level, I could be eligible for assistance with the premium under ACA. But, I must apply for my coverage through the Health Connector to determine and, I presume, get authorization to take the credits or subsidy. In order to determine how much my credit/subsidy might be, I must first obtain a denial letter from QUEST (Medicaid). This seems to me like an unnecessarily cumbersome bureaucratic labyrinth. QUEST personnel must be dealing with an avalanche of applications from people who (like me) won't qualify for QUEST, and who don't want QUEST anyway. Why not allow applicants to determine if (and how much) they can be subsidized through tax credits or premium reductions first, then, encourage them to apply for QUEST if their savings are still not enough for them to afford coverage. I wonder what bright spark thought putting the QUEST cart before the ACA horse was a good idea?”
