Fact Of The Day #26: Maternal Mortality Rate Rising Despite Expensive Care (INFOGRAPHIC)

Fact Of The Day #26: Maternal Mortality Rate Rising Despite Expensive Care (INFOGRAPHIC)

“The problem is OBs are not practicing evidenced based medicine. For example, fetal monitoring. It was introduced as a theory to reduce cp. Cp rates haven't dropped, but lots of women are given an "emergency" c-section because the heart rate dropped. They then remove a squalling, pink infant who clearly does not need recessitation. There is no evidence monitoring has a benefit. American obstetrics is full of examples like that.”

“I must have missed the part of the article that stated she shared your religious beliefs.”

“It's never to early to teach your children manners and that feelings matter. Had someone done that with you at 4, perhaps you wouldn't be so rude.”

“My thoughts exactly, and I said as much in my post (which is pending and hopefully posts soon). Too many parents these days are taking this exact approach and because of it you can tell a huge difference between kids today and kids when I was growing up (I'm a Gen Xer). People who don't teach their kids to sympathize/empathize are the same kinds of people that make a YouTube video of a hit-and-run victim instead of rushing out to help him. And their kids are going to grow up the same way.”

“It is good that she learned immediately that children are never quite what you expect.”

“If teaching my children basic hygiene makes me perfect, I'll accept the label - thanks!!”

“The point being made is unless you keep your perfectly hygienic child in a bubble, exposure on playgrounds from other children is still something you need to consider.”

“When either of my TWO children has a cut, I cover it with a bandaid. It protects them from getting anything in their wound, and it protects others from catching anything from them. Letting your child walk around dripping blood is just poor parenting. Bruises don't break the skin, so no, bacteria cannot penetrate a bruise. I taught my children to keep their hands out of their bodily orifices - your mileage may vary.”

“Well don't take the word of someone like me who worked in microbiology lab for 30 some years then. There is no such thing as the perfect parent as you portray yourself to be. Kids laugh, kids spit, kids sneeze, the scratch cuts and unfortunately bacteria do infect even perfect parents children.”

“No, I'm pretty sure the "OUTDOOR playgrounds" I stated above are, in fact, OUTDOORS. That is why I used the comparative "different" in my question, to differentiate them from the indoor playgrounds discussed in the article. But maybe that is just where I live, and where you live, there are OUTdoor playgrounds indoor - :::shrug:::”

“How are these different than outdoor playgrounds? Does this woman also call her local parks and recreation department and demand they sanitize the slides on a regular basis? A good handwashing and perhaps change of socks is all that is really needed after playing in these structures. Most of these pathogens cannot penetrate the skin, and are on all surfaces we encounter.”

grata2ude on Jul 14, 2011 at 19:24:32

“You obviously either don't have and never been around kids or you aren't thinking. You say they can't penetrate the skin. Kids have cuts and bruises that these bacteria can penetrate. Kids put their fingers in their mouths, noses, ears and yes gross as it is, their privates. They also put their fingers on other kids bodies.

All this woman is asking is that the eateries make a habit of cleaning their playgrounds just like they have to clean their tables, and where they cook.”

I Am Pregnant. Please Shut Up: An Etiquette Lesson

“You'd be surprised at how easy "hands-free" can be. I pumped in an office while working at my laptop, every day for a year. I also pumped in the car on the drive home, using the power outlet and two rubber bands looped together (one around the bra hook, one around the pump horn) to hold the pump in place. Motherhood is time consuming and you have to learn how to multi-task.”
