“I am in awe of you for the passion of your words and for showing us all who live on a treadmill that it is okay to hit the pause button. Thank you for showing us your feelings as a choked up proud mother. And, thank you for using two words that are not tweeted, messaged nor spoken enough - "blessed" and "pray."”

Fear of Public Speaking

Commented Jul 13, 2012 at 14:40:19 in Business

“Before I begin my presentation, I take a moment to imagine I hear a friend ask a question. It gives me time to take a breath and collect my thoughts. When I give an informative speech on how to go to college for free, I hear before beginning, I'm not a trust fund kid and I suck at sports! How can I afford to go to college? No. I am not crazy and I don't hear strange voices in my head telling me to do things. I simply PRETEND to hear someone ask me a question about my topic. Once I hear the question, the focus is OFF of me and ON the question - thus, minimizing those nerves.”

How to Get Love From Independent Publishers and the Future of Books: Richard Nash & the Book Doctors

Commented Jun 18, 2012 at 19:02:18 in Books

“Whenever David Henry Sterry posts, I, as a nonfiction writer, listen. His book, "The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published" has been my bible as I proceed forward into the vast world of what and what not to do with that idea that must be put into print. Thank you, David and Arielle, for your wisdom and guidance on a road where one can easily get lost. http://thespeakingguide.com

Heroes And Cowards Have One Thing In Common: Fear

Commented Jun 15, 2012 at 14:38:52 in Healthy Living

“I teach public speaking and daily I must help my students subdue one of life's greatest fears. "But I can't," many say. So, you act like you can. Pretend you can! Pretend jumpstarts reality. "Make believe your brave and the trick will take you far. You may be as brave as you makebelieve you are." Oscar Hammerstein

“Ah yes, public speaking. You can add that to my list of fears! I used to get so nervous in high school when I would have to get up in front of the class. Wouldn't you know it though, in college, I did a peer education and counseling group where I spoke in front of 500 student lecture centers daily. And I LOVED it. We never know what we can accomplish until we try, right? Thank you for reading and for sharing. I love that Oscar Hammerstein quote!”

The Two Words Everyone Fears: 'Public Speaking'

“The brain speaks. For many it screams, like a brat throwing a tantrum, when it's your turn to speak in public. "Who would ever want to hear what you have to say and you're going to suck anyway!" When you listen to that rant, it will give you lockjaw faster than stepping on a rusty nail. Instead: 1. Breathe 2. Pretend that you're about to talk to someONE who has a problem and you have the fix. 3. Focus on that someONE you are about to help, not the screaming brat.”

“Although this winter was a powder puff, New England winters are brutal. I don't want to socialize, bask under the glow of flourescents or even listen to music when I exercise. Give me real air, even if it's 14 degrees. The colder the temp, the faster the walk. Today is my birthday and I feel younger than I did ten years ago before I started walking fast, 4 times a week. Wearing a size 4 is pretty nice, too!”

“Unfortunately, your opening quote is attributed to the wrong person. I, too, thought this quote was from Bill Gates, until I began researching material for a book I was writing. It turns out this quote was written by Charles J. Sykes, and appears in his 2007 book, "50 Rules Kids Won't Learn in School: Real-World Antidotes to Feel-Good Education."”
