“Its true, the Scottish Aristocracy had all invested in a scheme to establish a Scottish Colony in Panama called the Darien Scheme, when it went bust it left them all bankrupt. The English offered to make good their losses in return for voting for the Act Of Union with England.
When the aristocrats in the Scottish Parliament voted for the Act of Union they had to run for their lives chased by an angry mob of Edinburgh Citizens.”

'On 5 February 1705 the House of Commons in London passed legislation which would help to shape the entire future history of the United Kingdom. The Alien Act recommended to Queen Anne that commissioners be appointed to negotiate for Union between England and Scotland and, if the Scots did not comply and if discussions were not advanced by Christmas Day 1705, severe penalties would be imposed...In the event, the obnoxious clauses of the Alien Act were eventually repealed...in November 1705..'

'...England retaliated in 1705 with the Alien Act, which declared that, until Scotland accepted the Hanoverian succession, all Scots would be treated as aliens in England and the import of cattle, sheep, coal and linen from Scotland into England would not be allowed; this measure stimulated the Scots into appointing commissioners to treat for union.'

“But it was the nobles and NOT the nation of Scotland who "went bust" which is a very important distinction. And lets not forget the English army which was sitting on Scotland's border if the complicit nobles didn't vote the way they were bribed.”
“I think MP's pay should be tied to performance. The best way to do this would be to make it a multiple of median annual salary. In 2011 this was £21,326. You could make MP's salaries 3 times the average or £63,978, Cabinets Ministers 4 times or £85,304 and the PM's 5 times or £106,630.”

“So its OK for every country to spy on each other, but when someone draws attention to this supposedly OK behaviour then all the other countries have to extradite the whistleblower back to the country that he blew the whistle on?
That seems to be what the US is arguing.”

“Yes that is what the leader of the free world(joke) is saying, this treaty with the European union on trade was simply a bribe to tell the British members of parliament leave the EU and your screwed, but just maybe now that will back fire or maybe the eurocrats will just all the united states to continue there spying in return for a wee bit of the crumbs from the American table”
“I look forward to the day when the ignorance, misogyny and superstition called religion no longer has a single adherent on this planet. Perhaps then young girls will be free to be themselves without being attacked or killed by hate filled fools.”

“The Snoopers Charter would not have prevented this attack or any other previous attack. The attacks are being used as cover for May and the inept security services under her charge for a power grab that they do not need. It is a massive intrusion on the privacy rights of law abiding UK citizens and will not make us any safer.
If the Government was truly serious about protecting this country they would be using section 40 of the British Nationality Act to strip the hate preachers and their followers of UK citizenship and deport them.
No to the Snoopers Charter and if that causes the incompetent Ms.May to resign, more the better.”

“I am sorry, but simply another round of condemnation is not going to be enough. As long as hate preachers like Anjem Choudhury are allowed to speak in Mosques and recruit followers to their poisonous ideology then the whole Muslim Community is going to get tarred with the same brush.
What is required is for the Muslim Community to utterly reject proselytisers of jihad and refuse to give them a soap box to spout their garbage, brand them blasphemers of Islam and issue fatwa's against giving them any kind of support.
Anything less will simply be playing into the hands of far right hate groups like the EDL.”
“"psychological addiction" is a rubbish term that could be applied to anything from video games to collecting garden gnomes. When I use addiction I mean in the sense of a real physical addiction not some term that somehow justifies a lack of self control. ”
“I have, for the last 8 years I have been working in Indonesia and frankly the penalties here are too draconian to risk it. I will however occasionally indulge when I am in a more enlightened jurisdiction.”

“There is no conclusive evidence that long term cannabis use causes mental health problems. The claim that cannabis causes mental health problems was made by Professor David Murray of Maudsley Hospital in South London. A number of clinical studies have been taken since and they have been unable to confirm his hypothesis.
As far as driving while under the influence the same could be said for cold medications or even using a mobile phone, but you would not claim that Lemsip or Nokia caused their death.”
“In the 10,000 year history of human use of cannabis there is not 1 single case of anyone dying from taking it. The ridicules prohibition against its use has however caused the deaths of thousands. How many more people have to die before our political leaders finally bring in reasonable regulation rather than criminalizing otherwise law abiding people and ruining countless lives.”

“Agreed 100%. My mother is 60 this year and has supported legalisation for decades. Both her and my father smoked weed during my childhood and now I'm a qualified lawyer who pays her bills and doesn't hurt anyone, yet I also smoke weed regularly. My brother is a fireman and moved to Amsterdam where he can grow his own. He has a beautiful family there now and he works hard to support them. So many people have the wrong idea about the drug because they are sheep. As if the law has never been wrong.”
“While you may have benefited by gaining full time employment it still does not change the fact this program is exploitative and allows companies to fill positions that they would have filled with paid staff if this program was not available.
Because those paid jobs are not filled money is lost that would have paid taxes while benefits are still being paid out, this is prolonging the recession.
Rather than going through a normal interview process to screen candidates they just take them all on, at zero cost. Then out of the 20 exploited people they pick the subservient fool who is happy to work for nothing and reward him with a minimum wage job.
This gives them an unfair advantage over ethical companies that refuse to participate in this, because of that I personally boycott any company that participates. ”

“No. It doesn't. I've already explained this. The work experience guys have almost no effect at all on the existing staff's hours. And in the rare cases that they do, they increase them.
They keep on staff who have a good attitude and work hard. Don't undermine the people who get hired. It's ridiculously insulting.
And please don't call me a "subservient fool" while arrogantly stating things that are just plain untrue. It's hypocritical as rude. ”
“I don't see why any company would fill any of their unskilled positions by actually hiring someone and paying them a wage when the government is forcing people to do the job for free. This policy is very poorly thought out and besides being vindictive to people who find themselves unemployed is also likely to prolong the recession as people remaining on JSA displace people who would have otherwise been hired to do these jobs. It is just a 21st century version of the workhouse, with dire social and economic consequences for everyone.”
Sam111 on Feb 18, 2013 at 00:40:43
“Speaking as someone who was on this work-experience it's a lot better than you think.
The people who come in work-experience are only there for a few weeks, need to be trained and supervised and can't work on tills. It has no effect on the other staff or their hours.
Poundland is not an empire working on Slave Labor. What you have to understand is all Poundland knows about these people, is they have been on jobseekers for months, So the result is you end up with a motley crew of different personalities. We've had lazy people, rude people and intelligent hard working guys just being looked over due to lack of experience (such as myself)
When I started I was in a small group. Me and 1 other person in that group got quickly hired due to our good attitude and hardwork. I've been there now for 20 months, we've had a couple more waves and each time people get hired.
Yes no job is guaranteed but it's a real opportunity. It can get you a job or at least closer to one with experience and a reference if you give it a chance. and I promise you it is not "vindictive" at all.
It's not perfect but don't let people fool you. It's a much much better system than it looks. And it does or at least can work for people. It's helped me/many people I know and it could have helped even more.”
“The battle is not a clash of civilizations, but a clash within Islam itself. On one side you have moderate muslims like Baroness Warsi and on the other you Salfist groups such as Islam For Europe.
Many feel that Islam is a threat because moderate muslims have been incapable or unwilling to confront the Salafists whose ideology is as offensive as any on the extreme right. Rather than waste public funds supporting organizations like MAMA it should be used to monitor the activities of Islamic hate groups.”

“Chris Christie was offered the VP slot but turned it down, he knows that Romney's campaign is crippled by his off-shoring of his wealth and his refusal to disclose the tax returns that confirm that. It may have been a selfish speech but it was Christie choosing to prime his presidential campaign for 2016, rather than offer support to an obvious loser in 2012.”
