Do Vaccines Cause Autism? CDC Finds No Link Between Number Of Shots And Disorder

Do Vaccines Cause Autism? CDC Finds No Link Between Number Of Shots And Disorder

“It also said this in the study  "It can be
argued that ASD with regression, in which children usually
lose developmental skills during the second year of life, could be related to exposures in infancy, including vaccines;" hmmmmm...   ”

“Spot on”

Lynne Batik on Mar 30, 2013 at 18:41:44

“How about you quote that partial sentence in context:

"The possibility that im- munologic stimulation from vaccines during the first 1-2 years of life could be related to the development of ASD is not well supported by the known neurobiology of ASD, which tends to be genetically determined with ori- gins in prenatal development,19-22 although possible effects in early infancy cannot be ruled out completely. It can be argued that ASD with regression, in which children usu- ally lose developmental skills during the second year of life, could be related to exposures in infancy, including vaccines; however, we found no association between expo- sure to antigens from vaccines during infancy and the de- velopment of ASD with regression."

In other words, people make the argument -- but their data do not support it.”

“NO it didn't...it just said they all received the same number of antigens and vaccines...and therefore, doesn't cause autism.  I bet you think cigarettes don't cause lung cancer either... ”

cable1977 on Mar 31, 2013 at 09:55:02

“Well, with cigarettes, if you performed a study examining the number of cigarettes smoked you would find an increased amount of lung cancer that correlates with the increasing cigarette number. No such case with this study.

You really don't understand what a correlation is, do you? It's ok, not everyone understands the basics of science, but perhaps it would be useful to learn a little bit before trying to comment on an article like this.”

gratnam on Mar 30, 2013 at 22:06:35

“The antivaccine parents do claim that kids are now getting more vaccines than ever before resulting in more risk of autism. I was in a long debate with one parent over this a while ago. This parent counted the number of shots her children were supposed to get versus what kids received several years ago.”

“No, you have that wrong. The "antivaxxers" claim that the increased number of vaccines pushes more at risk kids into autism. They do not claim that kids with autism receive more vaccines than kids without autism.”

cable1977 on Mar 30, 2013 at 10:21:23

“"They do not claim that kids with autism receive more vaccines than kids without autism. "

Yes, they do. You really don't understand epidemiology do you? If a relationship existed between increased risk of autism from increased number of vaccine antigens, then such a risk would be apparent in a study like the one above.”

DakkonA on Mar 30, 2013 at 09:47:14

“If that relationship existed, number of vaccines would be correlated with autism.”

“dumb study...having the same number of vaccines has nothing to do with someone having a predisposition to reacting to a vaccine. Not everyone that drinks alcohol is an alcoholic. dumb waste of money by the cdc....again.”

“Dumb commentary. Apparently you aren't aware that antivaxxers have moved to claiming that the number of vaccines given at birth has been increasing and thus must clearly be the cause of autism.”

Vaccine Court Awards Millions to Two Children With Autism

Commented Jan 14, 2013 at 18:23:12 in Healthy Living

“I went to the vaccine court link and looked at all the cases...so so many for the flu shot.
too many for death from vaccines. I was most surprised by the lousy payments...150,000 to about 250,000 for death of a child...if i read correctly. And many for encephalopathy...no millions handed out there either...what a crappy system we have.”

Heywood Merton on Jan 15, 2013 at 15:53:45

“"I went to the vaccine court link and looked at all the cases..."

Here's a hint: 'looking at' something isn't the same as reading it.

"so so many for the flu shot."

106 compensated cases since 1989 is 'so so many'?”

Shifting Focus: 8 Facts About Autism the Media Is Not Covering

Commented Mar 18, 2010 at 08:48:47 in Healthy Living

“Thank you Holly for writing this. It hits really close to home. Especially the guilt part. I have twins with Autism. One has responded well to treatment (we've done everything!) and one has not responded to well. We are the perfect example of "not everything works for every child". I am terrifed of puberty, and terrified of the future. I would like to stop time because life is mostly managable with the twins at 9. Looking forward to reading your husbands book!”

calamityjohn on Apr 2, 2010 at 16:25:38

“thank you for posting this .. wonderful comment .. I have seen so many parental support groups turn into guilt trips for parents (often not intentionally) .. our kiddo is on the severe end and 17 .. and I am still terrified of the things to come .. but on the other hand keep in mind that things change in all sorts of different directions ... always some progress and always new challenges .. hang in there.”

mom2luke on Mar 24, 2010 at 09:25:47

“Katie Kelley, did your one twin recover? sounds like your kids would be perfect for this study... twins are so interesting, to me proof that toxins lodge in certain critical areas, proof autism is caused by ENVIRONMENTAL factors, NOT GENES.
NIH Symptom Remission in Autism. The National Institute of Mental Health is conducting a research study of children and adolescents ages 8-17 who, since being diagnosed with autism, have improved so much that they no longer meet criteria for autism. Children ages 8-17 who continue to meet criteria for autism and typically developing children may be eligible as well. This is an outpatient and inpatient study at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. Transportation and lodging reimbursement may be available. The study is free and participants will be compensated for their participation. “I believe the name of the book is healing autism, not curing autism. There is a big difference. and I must ask, as a person with aspergers did you, do you suffer from gut inflammation (diarhea, reflux etc) Did you speak at a young age or did it require grueling years of speech to say mom? Did you have low tone that required ot.pt. Did you suffer from seizures? Did you/ do you suffer from food allergies, skin allergies. Did you prefer to smear poop on walls rather than play with toys? Aspergers is generally a social skill problem. The autism we are dealing with today has so many co-morbid conditions the prevent normal/timely development that I don't even think it should be called just autism. It needs a new name.”

“Yes, it is more dangerous at an older age. I remember a patient is the ICU I worked with being on a venitlator from chicken pox. BUt this scares me because they don't know how long the vaccination lasts. Which will lead to millions being susceptable to the disease at a much later stage in life, instead of having millions have lifelong immunity from getting the disease as a child. I think this vaccine is a big mistake.”

“Smallpox was of two kinds: variola major, with a very high case fatality rate, and variola minor, which had a much lower CFR. There were some epidemics of variola major with CFRs of 30 percent, from which one reader may have gotten the figure of three in ten.

There is now little support for revival of smallpox vaccination, either for civilian or military populations. The risks exceed the benefits.

A complete history is Frank Fenner et al., Smallpox, World Health Organization. The director of the smallpox programm, DA Henderson, is bringing out a book this year, Death of a Disease, which treats the same subject more concisely than the WHO book.”
